The Atlanta Dream (25–14) hit the road this afternoon to face the Connecticut Sun (10–29) at Mohegan Sun Arena.
Atlanta has already clinched a playoff berth, but they still have work to do this Labor Day. The Dream sit just half a game behind the Las Vegas Aces for the No. 2 seed, and a win today would bring them even with the league’s hottest team.
Las Vegas has rattled off 12 straight victories, yet Atlanta has a favorable closing schedule. Three of their final five games are against the Sun, who own the league’s third-worst record. The other two are tougher tests against the Los Angeles Sparks, who are fighting with the Indiana Fever for the final playoff spot.
By contrast, the Aces finish with two games against the struggling Chicago Sky, but also have matchups against the Minnesota Lynx and Sparks.
The Dream should get even stronger with Jordin Canada expected back before the postseason. In the meantime, they remain formidable with their balanced core of Allisha Gray, Rhyne Howard, and Brionna Jones.
As for Connecticut, the rebuild continues with limited returns so far. Veteran center Tina Charles, the 36-year-old league legend, is still their top scorer but likely nearing the end of her career.
The Sun have shown some late-season fight, though, climbing out of the cellar with five wins in their last eight — including victories over fellow strugglers Chicago and Washington.
