PLAINFIELD – Plainfield girls basketball coach John Lorange watched his team clang shot after shot in the first quarter against Montville on Thursday night and couldn’t believe it was happening again.

The last two times the Panthers met the Indians in the ECC tournament, they hoisted up shooting percentages in the low teens.

“I started seeing some déjà vu,” Lorange said. “We were playing great but we could not hit a shot. I didn’t want to go down like this so we definitely turned it around in the second quarter.”

Did they ever.

Looking like a mini-version of the Showtime Lakers – minus the dunks and Magic’s flashy passes, of course – Plainfield got their running game in gear, erasing an early 10-point deficit in the blink of an eye.

And then the Panthers kept running and running and running.  

Plainfield ran past Montville, 48-33, and advanced to Saturday’s ECC Division II tournament semifinals.

The Panthers, seeded No. 4, will host top-seeded St. Bernard at 1 p.m.  The Saints (11-9) defeated Wheeler, 48-26, in their quarterfinal round matchup.

The Panthers, who reeled off six straight wins after a 38-34 loss against St. Bernard on Jan. 25, are one win away from playing for an ECC championship at the Mohegan Sun Arena.

“We kind of hit our stride and all started working together,” Plainfield senior forward Allison Conger said. “It transferred from practice to game time. We’re all leaders in our own way. We all do our job on the court and it definitely shows. If we keep working like we are now I think we can get (to Mohegan).”

Plainfield (13-8) and Montville (10-11) split two close regular season games but the Indians looked like they were going to run away with this rubber match.

Bruce A. Meldrom

Poughkeepsie – Bruce A. Meldrom, 74, of Poughkeepsie, NY, died Feb. 16 unexpectedly at home.

He was born August 16, 1947, in Poughkeepsie to Philip V. and Lila Shaffer Meldrom. He attended Red Hook schools and graduated from Red Hook High school in 1964. He served in the US Navy for 4 years.

On Dec. 4, 1971, he married the former Linda Tuttle, who survives at home. They recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

Bruce was employed at the Poughkeepsie Journal for over 45 years, first in the composing room and later in the Ad Service Department for Display Advertising.

After retiring he worked at Enterprise Rent A Car, later worked for several years at Home Depot and he was currently employed at the Hyde Park Florist.

Bruce was an avid You Tube watcher, he would always say if you need to know something look on You Tube. He also enjoyed playing Texas Hold’em online for fun and loved going to Mohegan Sun a few times a year. He was a true lover of pets and enjoyed many years with our cats, Scooter, Joey, Sarah, Benny and our most recent cat, Jag.

In addition to his wife, Bruce is survived by his two daughters, Amy (Scott) Rajczi, Hyde Park, NY and Kathy (Bryan) Haase, Poughkeepsie, NY., his two older brothers, Philip (Kathy Tuttle), Rhinebeck, NY and James A. Meldrom, SanAntonio. TX. and his 4 grandchildren, Emma, Paul and Megan Rajczi and Samantha Haase. He was predeceased by his parents and his first granddaughter, Amanda Rajczi.

A strong group-wide performance, encompassing land-based establishments and online gaming, has led to Mohegan Gaming and Entertainment recording year-over-year improvements in net revenue and adjusted EBITDA.

This is aligned to the strong performance at the company’s owned and managed properties, as well as the addition of Mohegan Sun Casino Las Vegas and MGE Digital, compared to the prior period.

However, it is noted that 2020 was negatively impacted by various COVID-19 related restrictions, including the closure of the MGE Niagara Resorts for the entire period and Mohegan Sun Pocono for 20 days, in addition to state-mandated public health protocols at the operator’s other properties.

Net revenue through the quarter ending December 31, 2021, scored a 74.2 per cent increase to $402m (2020: $230.8m), with income from operations up to $35.2m (2020: $10.6m), net loss dropping 56.1 per cent to $11.7m (2020: $26.6m), and adjusted EBITDA rising 140.8 per cent to close at $97.4m.

When compared to the period ending December 31, 2019, net revenue and adjusted EBITDA increased 0.7 per cent and 29.7 per cent, respectively, which, MGE says, was largely driven by improved overall volumes and reductions in labour and marketing costs.

“Our consolidated adjusted EBITDA of $97.4m continues our trend of strong performance and demonstrates MGE’s ability to drive profitability,” said Raymond Pineault, CEO of MGE.

US tribal casino operator Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment says it has recommenced construction of its South Korean integrated resort, Inspire Korea, after completing financing late last year.

As previously reported by Inside Asian Gaming, Mohegan confirmed the completion of financing in November with the full US$1.55 billion in aggregate funding comprising US$575 million in equity, a KRW1.04 trillion (US$890 million) finance loan from raised through a three-bank Korean consortium – KB Securities, NH Investment & Securities and Hana Financial Investment – and KRW100 billion (US$85.5 million) from the General Contractor, Hanwha Engineering & Construction Corp.

Subsequent to completion of the financing, Inside Asian Gaming interviewed Mohegan Gaming and Entertainment International President Bobby Soper in December 2021.

As part of its overnight results announcement for the three months to 31 December 2021, Mohegan said Hanwha Engineering & Construction Corp has “remobilized and recommenced construction work on site” including structural steelwork and below grade utility construction plus infrastructure related work such as utilities and roadways to the site. The procurement of major trades and long lead items is also in progress.

Mohegan had stated upon securing final financing in November that it is hoping to open Inspire Korea within the first half of 2023.

The development is slated to include three hotel towers, an arena, a foreigner-only casino, dining, retail, convention and entertainment options, a year-round indoor water dome experience, and an outdoor family park.

It will become the second integrated resort to open in Incheon after Paradise City – the latter being a joint venture partnership between Korea’s Paradise Co and Japanese gaming firm Sega Sammy Holdings.

The company said on a call with analysts overnight that the resumption of construction “demonstrates MGE’s dedication to growth and diversification.”
