UConn men’s basketball freshman Liam McNeeley named to watch list for Julius Erving Award

UConn freshman forward Liam McNeeley was one of 20 players named to the watch list for the Basketball Hall of Fame’s Julius Erving Award, which is given annually to the best small forward in college basketball.

The Top 10 recruit, one of coach Dan Hurley’s highest-ever, was one of the best shooters in his high school class and a McDonald’s All-American. He fills a significant need for the Huskies following the departure of four starters to the NBA last season, and will be counted on to have an impact similar to that of Stephon Castle, the first “burger boy” Hurley got to Storrs.

McNeeley was named the Big East Preseason Freshman of the Year at Big East Media Day earlier this month.

But his availability for the start of the season is still in question after he suffered a lower calf strain in practice before First Night. Hurley said at Big East Media Day – two weeks before the season-opener vs. Sacred Heart – that the injury looked like it would require a two-to-three week recovery period before McNeeley can return to action.

He was healthy to play in UConn’s charity exhibition game against Rhode Island on Oct. 14 and finished with 10 points, four rebounds and three assists in 24 minutes. Hurley later said McNeeley was hyperventilating as they stood next to each other during the national anthem.

Caitlin Clark and WNBA Have Created Ratings Competition for NBA

We now live in a world where comparing the WNBA to the NBA directly from a viewership standpoint is no longer a laughable proposition, with the most recent returns emphasizing how the gap between the two leagues is indeed closing.

ESPN’s first NBA telecasts of the season pulled in an average of 1.6 million viewers, that information per Awful Announcing. This is particularly interesting considering Caitlin Clark’s debut with the Indiana Fever, which aired on ESPN 2 and was the first major WNBA telecast on the network for the 2024 season, drew 2.1 million viewers.

Of course the curiosity factor around Clark’s debut and the fact that those NBA games were not actually the first of the regular season can be chalked up as the reason for the disparity in ratings going in the WNBA’s favor there.

But the trends show the friendly competition (they are the same entity after all with seasons that don’t really overlap) could continue to grow closer over time. To be clear, overall, the difference in viewership still remains heavily in favor of the NBA.

NBA regular season games averaged 1.6 million viewers across TNT, ABC and ESPN during the 2023-2024 season, which does not include games that aired on NBA TV, where the number was at 330,000. Meanwhile, the WNBA regular season averaged 1.19 million viewers across ESPN platforms and 1.1 million on CBS. The overall number fell to 657,000 when factoring in broadcasts on ION and NBA TV. But as you can see, when accounting for broadcast platform, it was not a total blowout.

It must also be…

MONTVILLE, Conn. — Mohegan Sun is home to two casinos, a hotel and spa, multiple entertainment venues, more than a dozen dining options, a 130,000 square-foot shopping center and now…the most Tesla electric vehicle chargers in Connecticut.

Meet Mohegan Fire Company’s new chief

Oct. 30—MONTVILLE — Matthew Suarez, elected earlier this month as the new chief of the Mohegan Fire Company, does not want to be complacent.

“You don’t want to get stagnant and stay in one place. You always want to be striving to learn that next job. It was like that in the military,” the 22-year U.S. Navy veteran said. “I’m like that now.”

He said the volunteer fire service should be no different.

“We have a lot of members that get comfortable where they are,” Suarez said. “And we’ve been pretty good as of late at motivating people to take more classes, to get qualified more. And I think that’s the direction we need to keep going.”

In December, the 53-year-old Suarez will have spent 16 years with the department, including serving as lieutenant, captain and assistant deputy chief.

Suarez succeeds Corey Gaetano who served six years as chief. Suarez defeated him 17-7 in a vote by volunteer firefighters this month.

“I”m glad to have the opportunity to move us forward into the future, and not forget where we came from,” he said.

Under his leadership, Suarez said the department will look to return it to its roots of providing “quality service to the community,” whether it be on medical or fire calls, or responding to accidents. One of the major priorities he wants to focus on is recruiting younger members.

“I mean, it’s a problem everywhere,” he said. “It’s not just a Mohegan, or a Montville problem. That’s a problem at every department,” he said.

“But quite often, I look around and realize I’m one of the younger guys at an accident and I go, ‘Oh man. We’re in trouble,’ ” he said, laughing.

“But that’s what you get during the day,” he said. “Guys are at their job. They’ve gotta feed a family. You know?”

Suarez said he has…

Mohegan Sun Offers the Most Tesla Charges in Connecticut

Mohegan Sun in Connecticut has pulled ahead in an unlikely but important amenity, with the property installing 60 new Tesla EV destination chargers.

Topping Up your EV’s Battery at the Mohegan Sun

The property now boasts the biggest one-stop-shop for all your EV charging needs, tailoring its offer to a player base that prefers electric vehicles over gas-guzzlers.

Thanks to the newly installed stations, Mohegan Sun is de facto the casino with the biggest EV charging capabilities in the state. Commenting on this opportunity, Mohegan Sun GM & president Jeff Hamilton has welcomed the opportunity to see the property host the EV charging stations and said that it was the second part of an ongoing partnership with Tesla.

“This EV charging roll out along with recent upgrades to our Royal Suites, the major refresh of our Sun Patio and the opening of the Shed Restaurant, with more incredible dining on the way – is all part of our goal to bring new, fresh and unique experiences and offerings to our guests,” Hamilton added.

The Tesla Destination Chargers now available at Mohegan Sun Level Four of the Indian Summer Garage, Level Three of the Riverview Garage, and Level Two of the Winter Garage, will all be available 24/7, offering guests the opportunity to plug in and charge their EVs without having to look for a station, easing their trip to and from the casino, and cutting waiting times for an available station.

Aiming at Casino Customers Who Drive EVs

Mohegan Sun Connecticut reminds drivers that they are also able to monitor their charging progress via the Tesla app, which allows them to quickly and easily keep track of how far along their charging has come.

Destination Chargers are not only available for Tesla’s, though, as other cars that use Universal adapters…

WNBA outlook is promising after record-setting year, although the league has a few challenges ahead

The current CBA will still be in effect throughout next season, but both sides would like to get a deal done sooner rather than later.

Negotiations are always intense, but those associated with the WNBA have much to be excited about.

The league is expanding and will increase the number of regular season games to 44. The WNBA will hold an expansion draft for Golden State in December. The Valkyries will be the league’s 13th franchise. The league will add franchises in Toronto and Portland in 2026, with at least one other team starting in either 2027 or 2028.

Although the WNBA could lose one of its iconic stars if Diana Taurasi announces her retirement, league officials are looking forward to another highly anticipated draft. The draft lottery is next month. It will determine who gets the first pick and potentially Paige Bueckers, who 21 years after Taurasi could become the next UConn guard to be selected No. 1.

Many of the league’s top players will remain in the U.S. this winter and play in January in Unrivaled — the 3-on-3 league started by WNBA Finals standouts Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier.

The Stewart and Collier championship showdown led to strong ratings, with all five games having more than a million TV viewers. The decisive Game 5 drew an average of 2.2 million viewers, peaking at 3.3 million, which made it the most-watched WNBA game in 25 years.

The league as a whole had its most-watched regular season in 24 years and best attendance in 22 seasons. During the 40-game regular season, 22 telecasts topped at least a million viewers on a host of networks.

The league’s rookie class, led by Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese, was a big part of that success — and all should come back stronger and better next year.

“When Caitlin Clark…

Gambling in South Korea: Mohegan Inspire gaming table drop rises 181%

Mohegan Inspire’s table drop increased from US$30.3m in February to US$85.2m in August.

South Korea.- Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment (MGE) has reported that the mass-market and premium-mass gaming table drop at Mohegan Inspire Entertainment Resort was US$85.2m in August, up 181.2 per cent since the casino at the complex opened in February. The number of casino visits increased by 185.3 per cent from 10,771 to 30,729.

At an investor day event, COO Joseph Hasson said there was still significant untapped market potential for Mohegan Inspire. He said the player rewards database expanded by 143.5 per cent since the casino’s launch, from 38,216 in February to 93,075 in August. The hotel occupancy rate increased by 31.4 percentage points, from 58.3 per cent to 89.7 per cent.

As for non-gaming offerings, which were introduced last November, Hasson mentioned live musical performances at the resort’s 15,000-capacity arena, the indoor water park, and the fully developed shopping and dining options centred around the property’s ‘digital entertainment street’, which features content that changes every 15 minutes.

The group’s fiscal year runs to September 30. For the quarter ending on June 30, the casino operator posted net revenue of US$504.16m, up 9.2 per cent quarter-on-quarter and 21.4 per cent when compared to last year.

The company attributed the rise to the continued growth of Mohegan Digital and Mohegan Inspire which posted net revenue of US$60.1m. The venue recorded negative adjusted EBITDA of US$7.6m. The net slot win was US$2,513 and the net table win US$35,270. Hotel occupancy amounted to 70.8 per cent in the second quarter.

In September, the company announced the appointment of three new executives: Julie Heo as chief legal officer (CLO), Jane Jon as chief finance officer (CFO), and Yuna Kim as associate vice president (AVP) of Resort Sales….
