History Knox

BRINKHAVEN — In addition to having gone through numerous name changes over the years, the eastern Knox County village of Brinkhaven has seen a lot of re-engineering of its roads and bridges.

The one seen in this vintage postcard image from the early twentieth century carried Ohio 62 across the Mohican River into the village. It was a single-lane structure that served as the main viaduct into Brinkhaven in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

At that time, as far as I can figure, the Cleveland, Akron & Columbus Railroad ran in the position that Ohio 62 is currently in, going under the long-gone trestle for the Wally Railroad (the popular name for the Walhonding Railroad), which crossed north-south through town.

I believe that trestle came down in the 1913 flood, which started long-term planning for flood control, which eventually resulted in construction of the Mohawk Dam in 1937.

The dam project increased the likelihood of flooding in the valley around Brinkhaven, so the CA&C Railroad was moved up to higher ground. The new, high railroad bridge served in that function for many years, but later became part of the Mohican Valley Trail after the rails were abandoned.

The railroad bridge was clad in wood and became the Bridge of Dreams covered bridge.

Forum Energy Technologies (FET) has secured a contract from the Memorial University of Newfoundland to supply an electric observation-class remotely operated vehicle (ROV) to its Fisheries and Marine Institute (MI), School of Ocean Technology.

The primary function of the Sub-Atlantic Mohican ROV system will be to support ocean research, while it will also be used for pilot technician training. For ocean research operations, the ROV will be required to carry a payload skid for navigation, equipment and sensors, as well as be capable of manipulation and intervention.

The Mohican is equipped for inspection tasks, non-destructive testing (NDT), light intervention, pipeline/cable/seabed survey, diver assist/safety, harbour and port security, scientific survey and data collection, renewable energy projects, civil engineering, long tunnel excursion and for inland waterways. The ROV was manufactured at FET’s UK facility at Kirkbymoorside, North Yorkshire, UK, and delivered to MI this year.

Kevin Taylor, FET Vice President – Subsea Vehicles, said: “FET has a strong reputation as a single source for manufacturing and delivering high-quality, robust vehicles and associated auxiliary products which are suited to underwater industry applications. As well as defence, this includes oil and gas, renewables, telecommunications, mining, aquaculture and academia. This contract demonstrates the value our vehicles can also offer to scientific research projects. We are very proud that Memorial University recognises our capabilities and reliability. Hocking Hills State Park is one of the most popular parks in the state for a reason. You can follow many paths, so choosing each trail can be challenging. However, we recommend a charming loop from Old Man’s Cave to Cedar Falls and back. This 6-mile loop will bring you through to the Upper Falls, then the gorge valley, passing the Lower Falls and Queer Creek. Following the trail, you can look for blue blaze marks around Grandma Gatewood Trail, where you will encounter recess caves, seasonal waterfalls, and slump blocks before reaching Cedar Falls. At this point, you can choose between going up to the parking lot to find facilities to stop for a picnic on the tables or descending via the Gorge Overlook Trail, leading to Rose Lake and back to Old Man’s Cave. For a more extended adventure, explore the new trails to Whispering Cave by following the Hemlock Bridge Trail, adding 1.2 miles to your hike.

MOHICAN TOWNSHIP — Three people were hurt after a two-vehicle crash Monday morning in Mohican Township, according to the Ashland Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Dennis M. Marks, 80, of Perrysville, Carl Dowdy, 70, of Mansfield, and a 16-year-old juvenile all suffered injuries and were taken to hospitals in Ashland and Mansfield.

According to the Patrol, the incident took place on U.S. 30 eastbound at the intersection of County Road 2175 in Ashland County at approximately 8:27 a.m.

The Trooper’s report stated that a 2022 Kia Forte driven by Marks was eastbound on US 30. A 2006 Honda Civic driven by a 16-year-old juvenile was southbound on County Road 2175 and failed to yield at the yield sign at the intersection of U.S. 30.

According to the Patrol, the Honda Civic pulled out into the path of the Kia Forte and both vehicles collided. After the collision, the Kia Forte went off of the south side of the roadway and came to a final rest on its left side. The Honda Civic came to a final rest in the roadway.

Both the driver of the Kia Forte and his passenger sustained serious but non-life threatening injuries and were taken by ambulance to Ohio Health Mansfield Hospital.

The driver of the Honda Civic was taken to Ashland Samaritan Hospital by ambulance with minor injuries.

All three individuals involved in the crash were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash.

The U.S. 30 eastbound lanes were closed for approximately 1 hour.

Other agencies assisting at the crash scene were: Jeromesville Fire & EMS, Hayesville Fire & EMS, the Ohio Department of Transportation, and the Ashland County Sheriff’s Office.

Drugs and alcohol are not considered to be factors in the crash. The crash remains under…

COLUMBUS — The Arts in the Parks summer workshop series brings state park visitors together with seven Ohio teaching artists to create engaging experiences. Workshops will offer an array of activities including creating art from recyclables, writing poetry and even decorating Ukrainian eggs. Day 2 of my ride across Ohio will be from Millersburg to my home in northeast Columbus. 

I like to get an early start on these long rides because one never knows what can crop up along the way. I grab a quick breakfast at the hotel and head out.

The Holmes County Trail takes me 5 miles to Killbuck, where I have to ride country roads to Glenmont to pick up the Mohican Valley Trail. 

You share the Holmes County Trail with Amish buggies. Watch out for horse by-product.

I can’t say much about Killbuck except there’s not a whole lot there and the place looks like it has seen better days.

I have no trouble on the roads. I see maybe five cars between Killbuck and Glenmont. I have a radar taillight plus a helmet mounted mirror so I have no problem “checking six”. 

The cars give me a wide berth. I have fortunately never had someone actively take a swipe at me although a couple have come too close for comfort over the years. If I see a line of cars getting backed up behind me I try to pull off and let them pass. No sense pissing people off. Enough folks hate cyclists as it is.

Out on the road. Fortunately not many cars this time of morning.

The Mohican Valley Trail features a 3 mile climb at maybe 2% grade followed by the same on the descent. The nice thing about rail trails is the climbs tend to be long and shallow because that’s what a train needed.

Thursday, Aug. 3, Dr. Nick Junkerman, an Associate Professor of Literature at Skidmore College, will present “James Fenimore Cooper: History & Fiction in ‘The Last of the Mohicans.’” The program will begin at 7 p.m. at the Fort William Henry Conference Center, 48 Canada Street, Lake George. The event is co-sponsored by the Lake George Battlefield Park Alliance and the French & Indian War Society at Lake George.

James Fenimore Cooper’s “Last of the Mohicans” presents an exciting and romantic fictionalized account of the siege and surrender of Fort William Henry. For many Americans, knowledge of the French and Indian War is limited to Cooper’s work. “Every day, guests come to the Fort William Henry Museum who either read Cooper’s book or saw the movie,” says Kathy Flacke Muncil, CEO of Fort William Henry Corp. “Our guides separate fact from fiction so visitors leave with a better understanding of this era in history.”

According to Russell P. Bellico, a trustee of the Lake George Battlefield Park Alliance, “The French and Indian War was a complex, lengthy power struggle for control of North America. Because Cooper’s depiction of the siege published nearly 70 years later was so popular, it became the most recognized event of the French and Indian War.” Bellico is the author of “Empires in the Mountains”and several other books on the region’s vast history.

Dr. Junkerman will talk about the legendary events that took place in and around Fort William Henry in August 1757 and point out differences in the fictional account depicted in Cooper’s novel.
