The Carrollton boys golf team continued its winning ways on Thursday with a 299 and a first-place finish at the Circle K Invitational held at EagleSticks Golf Club in Zanesville.

This is the fourth straight tournament win this season for the Warriors. John Glenn shot a 306 for second place and Wheeling Park shot 307 for third place.

Jaxon Rinkes was medalist with a 72 and Colton Moore added a 75, while John Birong and Cayden Rininger each shot a 76.

Dover finished fourth with a 316 as Chase Coyne led the Crimson Tornadoes with a 73.

Sandy Valley 165, Buckeye Trail 181

Connor Ritter fired a 35 as Sandy Valley improved to 2-0 overall and in the Inter-Valley Conference after a win over Buckeye Trail at Cambridge Country Club.

John Wood followed with a 42 and Dantae Faiello posted a 43 and Thorn Stenger posted a 45.

Washington Miller led Buckeye Trail (0-1, 0-1) with a 42, while Blake Miller (47) Carson Raber (49) and Brandon St. Clair (53) followed.

OCC Tournament

Trey Baker led the West Holmes Knights with an 83, good for a ninth-place tie in the individual standings, in the first of three Ohio Cardinal Conference Tournaments held at Mohican Hills.

Grady Toye’s 85 earned him a tie for 11th. Daniel Baird shot a 105, and Maverick Rickly shot a 107 to round out the team score for the Knights, who are in sixth place after the first event.

Strasburg 173, Ridgewood 217

Strasburg improved to 3-0 after an IVC win over visiting Ridgewood.

Trenton Bitikofer led the winners with a 39 followed by Jason Grywalsky (43), Blayne Cooper (45) and Parker Edwards (46)

Indian Valley 168, Claymont 169

Deagan Beaber, Brody Mead, Aden Trushell and Garrett Miller all fired 42s as Indian Valley nipped host Claymont in Inter-Valley Conference play.

16-year-old Mane Pakootas brings home second place; Defending champion Riley Prescott places fifth

OMAK, Wash. – It felt just like old times for Tyler Peasley.

Peasley a Colville tribal member and his family horse Mohican didn’t get the best start, but they managed to push through, going on to cross the finish line in first place on Thursday night in the first of four races at this year’s World Famous Suicide Race in Omak.

This was a special moment for Peasley not just because he’s back in the winning column, but for his horse too as this was his horse Mohican’s first time ever racing in the suicide race.

“First race, what a way to break him in right,” said Peasley after the race. “That horse is one that our family raised, it comes from our bloodlines.”

It’s been since 2011 that Peasley has won the Overall title as he expressed what it would mean to win it all this year.

“It would be insane for me,” Peasley said. “It would be crazy, I live for this race.“

The youngest rider in this year’s race, is Colville tribal member Mane Pakootas having just turned 16 this past June. Pakootas and his horse Lonesome would go on to place second. Lonesome is owned by George Marchand.

Tribal member Louis Zacherle  and Hoagy  placed third with Oliver Pakootas  and Onyx placing fourth. Defending champion Riley Prescott and Black Shay placed fifth.

Points are earned on a 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 basis, with the winner earning five points, second place earning four points, third place earning three points, fourth place earning two points and fifth place earning one point.

Last week was good for Dallas rapper David Morgan. On the spur of the moment, he decided to record a response to superstar Chicago rapper Chance the Rapper’s #SoGoneChallenge, a viral meme that involves freestyling over Monica’s 2003 hit song, “So Gone.”

Within a week, Morgan’s rendition had garnered almost 1,800 retweets and 3,500 Twitter likes.

“I didn’t even know the #SoGoneChallenge was a thing, but I saw Chance the Rapper do one so I figured I’d do one too,” Morgan says at the start of his video. “He was talking about his girl and I don’t really have one of those right now so … I mean, I can still rap.”

Morgan’s freestyle earned him lots of praise on social media, including at least a dozen comparisons to Outkast’s Andre 3000, as well as the attention of influential hip-hop bloggers like LowKey of You Heard That New. Dallas Mavericks forward Justin Anderson shared the video. But for Morgan, who’s seen his local buzz ebb and flow in a past life with hip-hop duo the Mohicans, the attention generated mixed emotions.

“When I saw all the mentions on Twitter, I was like, ‘Oh shit, this is tight! This is cool. People are paying attention,’” Morgan says. “It felt cool, but at the same time I felt like, in a couple days the retweets are going to stop and I’m going to be back to myself, so what’s next?”

A woman who lives near Mohican River in Ohio recorded howls on July 3 that she claims are from bigfoot. Suzanne Ferencak, a member of the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization, shared the two-minute-long audio file with the Mansfield News Journal. An unnamed analyst within the bigfoot community who listened to the recording said there was “high potential” for it being one bigfoot trying to locate another.

“The first howler has a brassy tone to its voice that can be indicative of (Sasquatch),” the analyst wrote. “There are a couple features in the execution, such as shifting to an ‘AA’ phoneme at the end of the call that are indicative as well, most noticeable in the last two howls.”

If you listened to the recording and thought those are coyotes, you’re not alone. Kyle Casey, a naturalist at Mohican State Park, listened to the recording and said it is most likely coyotes. “The closest thing that we believe it would be would be the call of an alpha male coyote,” Casey told USA TODAY. “A coyote calling in its pack.” He noted, however, that the recorded howls weren’t a perfect match for that explanation. Another Okita’s tale of a small community populated by gently eccentric characters

Shuichi Okita, with a very personal style, delicate but assertive at the same time, has been able to make himself known and appreciated in the circuits of festivals and in less mainstream circles with films that are difficult to label, often defined as “dramedy” that is a mixture of drama and comedy. Like in “The Woodsman and The Rain”, “The Chef of South Polar” and “Mori: The Artist’s Habitat”, the backdrop of “The Mohican Comes Home” is also a small community on an imaginary island in the Soto Inland Sea, off the coast of Hiroshima, where Okita places one of his typical characters, always dazed and looking out of place.

This time it is Eichiki (Ryuhei Matsuda), the titular “Mohican” (because of his haircut), who 7 years earlier had left his hometown for Tokyo, in search of work and fame in a death metal band. Eichiki hasn’t had much luck in Tokyo and, to make things more complicated, his girlfriend Yuka (Atsuko Maeda) is now pregnant. Therefore, he decides it’s time to make a quick visit to the parents and announce the news. A confusing welcome awaits him at home. His mother, after his 7-year absence, seems only surprised because Eichiki has not phoned before arriving, and his father Osamu (Akira Emoto) first calls him as a wimp slapping him and then organizes a big party with friends to celebrate the son and the grandson-to-be.

Hunter education classes

The Shreve Farmer’s Sportsman Club will hold its annual hunter education classes 6-9 p.m. Aug. 18-19 and noon-5 p.m. Aug. 20. All first-time hunters must pass the class before obtaining a hunting license.

To register, contact the ODNR at 1-800-WILDLIFE or log onto wildlife.ohiodnr.gov. Participants must attend all three days and pass the test to obtain the certification. For general information or directions, contact Missy at 330-464-5621.

Fall still shoots

Fall Still shoots will be held at the Shreve Farmer’s Sportsman Club beginning Aug. 7 and running every Sunday through Oct. 30. Shoots start at noon with sign up starting around 11:30 a.m. Participants shoot shot, 22 and slug. Try for a chance to win a variety of meat and cash prizes. The progressive jackpot is over $4,500.

Youth Outdoors Skills Day

The Ohio Sportsmen Farmers League is hosting its annual Youth Outdoors Skills Day on Sunday, Aug. 7. Events will include archery, air rifle range, trapshooting, zip line, and trapping demonstrations. Lunch and water will be provided plus door prizes will be given out at the end of the day.

Participation is free, but limited to 60 youths, ages 8–16 years old. Required sign-in is 11-11:45 a.m. with the program running from noon-6 p.m. The event will be held at the OSFL club grounds located at 1755 Jacoby Roa Copley.
