Snakebite, 51, is renowned for his colourful Mohawk, extravagant clothes and snazzy tattoos.

It takes about three hours before a match for hairdresser wife Jo to dye and sculpt his elaborate hair.

Traditionally for his opening match at the William Hill PDC World Darts Championship, the Scot goes that extra mile — and comes up with an even crazier idea.

Last year, he wore an outrageous green Grinch costume as he began the defence of his world darts crown.

In 2019, he survived a scare in his first match dressed as an Elf!

His latest attire is a well-kept secret and will be unveiled on Friday night in his second-round clash against Englishman Ryan Meikle.

It’s easy to pinpoint newcomers and visitors in the Hudson Valley by how terribly they mispronounce its towns.

Out-of-towners shouldn’t necessarily be blamed for this, as the region’s place-names are a series of English, Dutch, Lenape and Mohican terms mashed together over the centuries until they formed words pronounced far differently than they are spelled.

For instance, the first time this reporter entered the town of Copake in Columbia County, he attempted to pronounce it “CO-pak-ee,” thinking he was being smart by splitting the second syllable under the assumption the word looked Native American. Though I wasn’t totally off — the name is derived from the Mohican word for snake — achkook — and paug — pond — what came out of my mouth sounded more like a brand of tempura flakes than a town in Columbia County.

Let this guide help you to not make similar mistakes. We’ve talked to historians and other locals about the origins of different place-names in the Hudson Valley and Catskills, and how they’ve evolved to be pronounced the way they are today.

Accord (ACK-ord ), Ulster County

Tucked behind the western slope of the Shawangunk Ridge along the Rondout Creek in central Ulster County, this hamlet’s name is pronounced with the first syllable heavily stressed, distinguishing it from the noun meaning “treaty.”

The location was originally known by early American residents as “Port Jackson,” according to D&H Canal Museum Deputy Director of Collections Bill Merchant.

In the 1820s, the Delaware & Hudson Canal Company constructed a water route from Honesdale, Pa., to Kingston to transport coal to the Hudson River….

Tributes and condolences poured in as soon as the news of senior journalist Muhammad Ziauddin’s passing broke out on Monday with many describing him the “pioneer of economic journalism” and how his death would leave an irreparable void in the Pakistani media.

The veteran columnist passed away at the age of 83 after a prolonged illness in Islamabad. During his illustrious career spanning over 60 years, Ziauddin had worked extensively for almost all major newspapers of the country including The Muslim, The News, Dawn and The Express Tribune.

People belonging to various walks of life including the journalist fraternity, politicians and government officials expressed sorrow over the sad demise and paid tribute to his contributions to journalism.

Senator Mushahid Hussain, while speaking to The Express Tribune, said he knew Ziauddin since the days of ‘The Muslim’ and found the seasoned writer an outstanding economic journalist and a thorough professional, “who was among the first to do serious and substantive economic analyses with a sharp analytical mind”.

“I personally found him a kind, warm-hearted and well-read journalist. He was a highly principled man who was always ready to lend a helping hand to his friends and colleagues,” he added.

The seasoned parliamentarian further said that Ziauddin launched quality newspapers like The Express Tribune and was one of the most professional editors in the country’s print journalism.

Speaking to The Express Tribune, senior journalist Farhan Bokhari said Ziauddin will be remembered as the “pioneer of economic journalism” in Pakistan.

“He had a unique personality and his integrity was never questioned. He remained a man of very high moral standards throughout his career and therefore always respected for his views,” he added.

Tax Watch columnist David McKay Wilson will lead a community conversation on the region’s indigenous people and the issue of Mahopac High School’s Indian mascot on Sunday at Mahopac Public Library.

Wilson, who this past summer conducted research on the Wappinger tribe at the Stockbridge-Munsee Community Band of Mohicans’ reservation in Wisconsin, has written about the tribe’s opposition to the mascot.

The Wappinger tribe that lived in Westchester, Putnam and Dutchess counties joined the Stockbridge Indians in the Berkshires after they were forced out of the Hudson Valley in the 17th and 18 centuries.

Joining Wilson will be Native American historian Heather Bruegl, education director at the Forge Project in Columbia County.

While several districts in the Hudson Valley have retired their Indian-themed mascot, Mahopac and Wappingers are the only districts remaining in the Hudson Valley that have retained them. Since 2020, Mahopac has refused to entertain a public discussion on the issue.

Mahopac school board President Michael Mongon in September said that school board trustees were too focused on providing education for students during the COVID pandemic to discuss its race-based mascot.

Said Mongon: “When the pandemic comes to an end, the Board will listen to the community regarding the mascot.”

The event, which starts at 2 p.m. will take place in the library’s third floor community room, at 668 Route 6, Mahopac. The event is free, but registration is required.

Jasmine Neosh strolls through the Menominee Forest realizing that so much can be learned here about how native woods are supposed to be without many of the invasive plants from Europe.

These invasive plants pervade much of the woodlands in the country and foresters today are working to restore large swaths back to native environments partly through Indigenous land management techniques, such as prescribed burning.

It is work the Menominee have always practiced on a patch of land that was never taken by European settlers.

At the same time, the forest also provides a business for the tribe, supplying lumber in a sustainable way that has been used in many notable places, such as the Milwaukee Bucks basketball court and NCAA courts.

“Management of the forest was excellent, taking good care of the environment and making a profit,” Neosh, 32, who is a Menominee Nation citizen, said. “Most people think the area is wild. You can see the outlines (of the forest) from space. They think that Natives just left it alone. But we’ve tended to it like gardeners for the entire existence and we’re still doing that today. And as a result of that level of care and understanding that we’ve put into it, it’s incredibly healthy.”
