HUDSON — The 2021 speaker series of the Hendrick Hudson Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution continues at 2:15 p.m. Nov. 15 via Zoom. Bonney Hartley, member of the Stockbridge Munsee Mohican Nation and its Tribal Historic Preservation Manager, will discuss the significance of a 2021 archaeological excavation of the 1783 Ox Roast Feast Site in Stockbridge, MA. The site being explored is where an historic yet largely forgotten feast occurred. It was sponsored by none other than General George Washington who wanted to thank Mohican veterans for their service in the Revolutionary War.

Hartley is a cultural resources professional who works to preserve, manage and interpret indigenous cultural heritage. In her capacity as Tribal Historic Preservation Manager and working from an extension office in Williamstown, Mass., she protects Mohican and Munsee (Lenape) cultural sites and repatriates cultural items from a variety of institutions. Prior to this role she held posts with the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs and with nonprofit organizations including Seva Foundation.

Hartley holds a Master of Social Science Degree-International Relations from the University of Cape Town, South Africa. She was recognized in 2013 by the San Francisco Mayor’s Office as an American Indian Local Unsung Hero Awardee. Since 2018, she has served on the Board of Trustees of Historic Huguenot Street in New Paltz.

Seems I made the mistake a lot of retirees do; I allowed God and everybody to find work for me after I retired eight years ago.

Much of that came in the form of volunteering. That’s fine to a point. But there comes a time when you realize that a few hours here and a few hours there leave you with few hours to do the things you really want to do. In my case, that’s canoeing, camping and photography — all of which involve disappearing into the back country for hours or days on end.

You reach a point in your life when you realize that time is short. Sure, you might be around another 15 years or so. But, as you watch people your age become ill and grow frail, you come to realize that you might be exchanging your hiking boots for house slippers sooner than you thought. Or worse.

That scares me.

Gradually bowling out of volunteer gigs and speaking engagements

I’ve gradually bowed out of volunteer gigs and have taken on fewer speaking engagements lately. (I plan to remain active with the Mohican Scenic River Steering Committee and Friends of the Mohican River Watershed.) I’ve even stopped exhibiting photos for the time being.

I cringe when people suggest I should put more effort into “marketing my art.” I’m glad they appreciate my writing and photography. But presenting and promoting your work takes time and money. Neither of which I have in great abundance.

Absolute Investment Advisers (Absolute), a long-term client of the Apex Group (Apex), has closed its acquisition of Mohican Financial Management (Mohican).

Absolute is the fund adviser to the Absolute Convertible Arbitrage Fund (ARBIX) while Mohican Financial has been the Fund’s subadviser. The strategic transaction brings the two firms together.

Apex has worked with Absolute to support fund launches and provide ongoing fund services since its foundation in 2004. Absolute provides access to non-traditional investment strategies in mutual fund structures and continues to prove the value offered to investors by the asset class. In this case, the Absolute Convertible Arbitrage Fund (ARBIX) was launched on 14 August, 2017 with USD25 million in legacy assets and a 15-year track record. Fund assets under management have since grown to over USD525 million. Earlier this year ARBIX was named Lipper’s 2021 Best Alternative Equity Market Neutral Fund ranked one of 19 as of 11 March, 2021 for the three-year period.

“Convertible arbitrage is increasingly attractive to investors since it can complement either the fixed income or alternatives sleeve of a diversified portfolio. It may provide investors an opportunity for a moderate return with relatively low volatility, which is increasingly difficult to find in the current low interest rate environment. Día de los Muertos is an Indigenous Mexican celebration to remember loved ones who have passed on.

I have fond memories of decorating sugar skulls for my mom and writing the names of deceased relatives on them.

She would place them on the ofrenda that would typically also include a statuette of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the patron saint of Mexico, which merges an Indigenous goddess with the Virgin Mary.

The holiday runs from Nov. 1 to 2 and my family only recently started celebrating it again as we rediscover and revive our heritage.

This rediscovery and revival is one reason why I love this beat. I feel like I am helping to do that for Indigenous people in a broader sense, or at least bringing that light.

Another holiday that exemplifies this revival is Indigenous Peoples Day, which was on Oct. 11 this year.

And when Gov. Tony Evers while in Oneida that day issued an executive order that officially apologized for the state’s role in the injustices at the Indian boarding schools my eyes watered up a bit.

There were hundreds of Native American boarding schools in the U.S., part of federal policy in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to assimilate Indigenous youth into white society.

The apology might be the first step in addressing the wrongs that are still reverberating today.

Another story about revival I worked on in October is about the work being done toward the literal revival of the Mohican language in Wisconsin.

I also wrote about an Indigenous New York Times bestselling author’s visit to UW-Green Bay. Angeline Boulley’s “Firekeeper’s Daughter” will soon be adapted to a Netflix TV show.

And I wrote about a new tribal elder food box program, which incorporates Indigenous foods and addresses the hidden hunger…

Lewis Hamilton is “the last of the Mohicans” and remains the driver to beat, says his father, Anthony.

The Mercedes driver is currently fighting to win his eighth World Championship, trailing Max Verstappen by 12 points with five rounds remaining of the season.

The Dutchman is over a decade younger than the Brit, as are many other drivers the 36-year-old has found himself battling this year, with three of the top six in the standings 24 or younger.

His father doesn’t know how much longer he’ll stick around for, and with most others his age retiring, sees him as the last of the Mohicans.

“I’m not sure [how long he will race] is the answer,” he told talkSPORT.

“As I always say to him if you feel fit, if you’re still enjoying driving the car, still love getting in it, then keep going and that’s what he loves, he loves driving the car, I suspect he’ll keep going.

“There’s still a quarter of the season to go, at the end of the day we’ll keep fighting until the very end, win or lose, it would have been a fantastic season, win or lose.

The 1920s were the heart of the silent film era, building upon the early experiments with the medium and taking it in whatever directions filmmakers across the world could dream. Hollywood, taking advantage of the interruptions to the Italian and French film communities caused by World War I, solidified its grip on the film industry throughout the decade as bigger film studios, like Paramount, MGM, Warner Brothers, 20th Century Fox, Universal Pictures and United Artists began taking over the smaller houses.

The Roaring ’20s saw the advent of the art film, the movie star and the Academy Awards. It also was the decade where filmmaking rapidly transformed from silent movies to talkies beginning with The Jazz Singer in 1927. Feature films began to dominate shorts, while the genres at play flourished. Looking through the list below, it’s remarkable how many of these movies remain relevant today.

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari brought German Expressionist film to full view with art direction that’s every bit as dark and twisted as the story it tells. Set in an environment full of askew streets, warped roofs and staircases that travel at impossible angles, no film has the same spooky feel as this tale of a mysterious doctor and the sleepwalker he uses as a murder weapon. While the film’s influence is immeasurable, its visuals were more a catalyst for ideas than a target of direct imitation.
