Riley Baird scored 19 points and Claire Aufiero had a big fourth quarter as Nanticoke Area defeated Honesdale 48-33 Tuesday night in high school girls basketball.

Aufiero scored 11 of her 15 points in the fourth quarter as the Trojanettes outscored the Hornets 19-11.

Rowan Murray had 15 for Honesdale.

Pittston Area 38, Wyoming Area 26

Kallie Booth scored 18 points and Daniella Ranielli scored 14 as Pittston Area defeated rival Wyoming Area.

Morgan Janeski scored eight for Wyoming Area. Joselyn Williams added six.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Hazleton Area 59, Nanticoke Area 39

Hazleton Area used a 20-point third quarter to gain control and defeat visiting Nanticoke Area.

Josin Guerra led Hazleton Area with 14 points. Luke Gennaro had 13 and Sammy Guzman added 10. Nick Hebel scored nine.

Justin Spencer led Nanticoke Area with 12 points. Jaidyn Johnson added eight.

Northwest 44, Forest City 28

Landon Hufford scored 16 points and Gary McLendon added 15 as Northwest pulled away in the second half for a road win.

GIRLS SWIMMING

Dallas 139, Berwick 44

Peyton Stauffer (100 free, 100 back) won two events for Dallas.

Also posting individual wins for the Mountaineers were Olivia Thomas (200 free), Gabby Spaciano (200 IM), Brianne Dempsey (diving), Lydia Gonzalez (100 fly), Olivia Sitkowski (500 free) and Gina Kerrick (100 breast).

Sophia Guerriero posted Berwick’s only win in the 50 freestyle.

A man has received a lengthy prison sentence after he admitted he stabbed a 71-year-old town of Barker resident several times.

30-year-old Matthew Bonser of Nanticoke, Pennsylvania was sentenced to 20 years in state prison. In October, Bonser pleaded guilty to attempted murder, assault and burglary.

Authorities said Bonser broke into a home on April 17 and repeatedly stabbed a person who lived there. He then entered a home on Route 11 and threatened someone to steal car keys.

Broome County sheriff’s deputies and state police pursued the stolen vehicle. The high-speed chase ended when the car slammed into a pole and another vehicle on Colesville Road in Kirkwood. The 87-year-old man who was driving the other car was seriously hurt.

Nanticoke Area jumped to a 15-point lead in the first quarter on the way to a 54-38 victory over visiting North Pocono in high school girls basketball Monday night.

Claire Aufiero led Nanticoke Area with 16 points. Brooklyn Biehl and Riley Baird each netted 11. Shaylee Heffron scored nine.

Abby Lenchinsky paced North Pocono with 12.

Northwest 29, Wyoming Seminary 26

Charleigh Miner scored 17 points as Northwest edged Wyoming Seminary.

Margaret Ganter and Lexy Litchenstein led Seminary with eight points each.

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney joined the monthly roundtable of mayors in our area.

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. — Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney is the newest addition to the monthly meeting of the mayors hosted by Wilkes-Barre Mayor George Brown.

“Just exchanging ideas and you know, get to learn something from everybody,” said Kenney. “We got the infrastructure bill that’s coming and it’s going to have to be some consensus on state projects, and the northeast has similar issues that we’re dealing with. So in addition to COVID, and some of the other things you have to deal with, it’s always nice to get out of the city for a little bit exchange ideas with other people.”

The other mayors besides Wilkes-Barre’s and Philadelphia’s at the table are the mayor of Hazleton, Nanticoke, Scranton, Kingston, Williamsport, and Pittston.

“For me, the size of the city, it’s really all about numbers, issues, whether it’s COVID or budgets or police, the issues are kind of the same,” said Pittston Mayor Michael Lombardo. “It’s just what the multiplicative factor is. So it’s great to be here and exchange ideas. It’s nice to expand a group a little bit and have some different insights that will be here.”

“We don’t know everything. I mean, we can always learn from somebody and they do things differently or better. We can take that and take it back home and implement it there,” added Kenney.

Philadelphia just announced a vaccine mandate for indoor dining and sporting events to start next year—something Mayor Kenney says he’s ready to discuss, but it’s not something mayors in our area are prepared to make a decision on.

“I don’t know much about it. And hopefully, we’ll learn more today about that,” said Wilkes-Barre Mayor George Brown about the topic.

Nanticoke Indians gifted 30 acres of ancestral lands

Similar to Indigenous people across the country, Millsboro’s Nanticoke Indians believe in the concept of living and working now to the benefit of tribal members seven generations into the future. With the recent donation of 30 acres of ancestral land, future generations of the Nanticoke Indian Association will look back at 2021 as a year that tribal elders did in fact work toward that common goal.

The donated acreage has an address of Rosdale Road. It’s a triangular shape that stretches from immediately behind the NIA Tribal Center off Route 24 to the western tree line of Warwick Park to the east. There’s a small portion of land that sits across the street, near the intersection with Gull Point Road. According to Sussex County property records, the land was sold in late October for approximately $990,000.

Nanticoke Indian Chief Natosha Carmine, the tribe’s first woman chief, was the driving force behind the land donation and quick to point out the Nanticokes didn’t put one dollar toward the land. She said she wanted to try and get the parcel because it will help build a strong community among tribal members.

There’s always been a vision for the tribe to have a safe place to commune and be a part of a larger group, said Carmine. There are thoughts of putting in a walking path, a large pavilion and some athletic fields, she said.

“It’s a vision that will be defined in the future,” said Carmine.

Former Nanticoke Tribal Council member Bonnie Hall happened to be at the tribal center during the interview with Carmine. The donation is personal for her, she said – she can recall playing on that same field as a child, because it was once owned by her aunt Madge Harmon and uncle Wilbur Harmon.
