Nanticoke Indian Cultural Community Center prepares for expansion, future

MILLSBORO — After about 75 years making a former one-room schoolhouse work as a cultural and community center, Chief Avery Leaving Tracks Johnson is eager for the improvements to the facility along John J. Williams Highway to begin.

There are still some meetings and approvals before shovels hit dirt on the more than 2,800 square foot additions. Still, Chief Johnson maintains a high degree of confidence in the approvals process, since the project has garnered so much support so far.

“I think the community realizes this is something we deserve, and I’m happy about it, and my people are happy about it,” Chief Johnson said, pointing to the hundreds of signatures in support his petition for the project received, and the endorsements of elected officials and public foundations he said he received.

“We have been trying to run multiple programs from one big open space,” he said, which can be challenging due to the nature of some of the programs.

Cultural programs like drum or dance classes compete with educational and outreach programs for space, while certain offerings, like internal ceremonies, require more privacy.

The expansions will address these issues and more, Chief Johnson said.

“We have a lot of elders, so we have to make sure we are prepared. We offer financial literacy and financial independence training, computer training along with other important issues like the domestic violence roundtables and other discussions we have,” he explained.

For events like the 46th annual powwow, scheduled for Sept. 7-8 at Hudson Fields, Chief Johnson said his organization would contract with a commercial kitchen. The new building includes this feature, as well as expanded bathroom facilities and spaces that can be dedicated to certain activities, rather than rotating due to space concerns.

Should everything align the way Chief Johnson believes it will,…

10th Edwardsville Pierogi Festival kicks off

June 7 – EDWARDSVILLE – With items like pierogi pillows, ornaments and jewelry – not to mention the several delicious variations on pierogi – you could say Lauren Gorney of NEPA’rogi is ‘all in’ on the Edwardsville Pierogi Festival.

And you would be right.

Gorney was already busy as of noon on Friday with the 10th Edwardsville Pierogi Festival. The annual event runs through Saturday

,

June 8

from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m

“It’s been great so far,” Gorney said. “We’re selling pierogis at a rapid pace and people are buying a lot of the non-food items we have.”

The non-food items served at NEPA’rogi’s tent include the large fluffy pierogi pillows, smaller ornament-sized pierogis, and pierogi and pickle earrings.

“Our ciocci makes all these items,” Gorney said, crediting her Ciocci Melissa Fuss as the creator of the coveted pierogi items. “We also have T-shirts and hats and many other items.”

One thing NEPA’rogi gave away was a free smile as customers lined up to buy pierogis and check out all the new arrivals.

NEPA’rogi was founded in 2020 in Nanticoke, a family-owned business serving hand-crusted pierogi, seasonal pickles, Polish pastries, Ciocci’s handmade tchotchkes and more.

Their main location is 164 S. Market St., Nanticoke. They can be reached at 570-733-3191 or at NEPArogi@gmail.com.

Jackie Moran, chairman of the Edwardsville Hometown Committee, and Marilyn Mazeika, chairman of the vendor, were extremely pleased with the early crowd and believed the festival would be another great success.

“We have 91 vendors this year,” said Mazeika, “That’s a record for us. We have a petting zoo, kiddie rides, face painting and several photo cutout stands.”

A Pierogi party was held on Friday evening to celebrate Mr. Pierogi. The annual Pierogi Cook-Off competition will be held on Saturday and the…

Suspect in Newport Township assault stole police cruiser

NEWPORT TWP. — A suspect in a burglary and an assault in Glen Lyon allegedly stole a Nanticoke police cruiser leading to a massive search of a wooded area on Monday.

Joshua Goodwin, 44, of Wilkes-Barre, was apprehended about 12 p.m. after a several hour search that began on Orchard Street in Newport Township.

Police in Newport Township in court records say Goodwin was given a ride to a residence on Orchard Street by Melanie Hunter Miscavage, 52, of Glen Lyon, at about 2 a.m.

Miscavage visited a woman who lived at the house that Goodwin forced his way inside through a rear door, according to court records.

Goodwin allegedly assaulted and strangled the woman and held a handgun to her head threatening to kill her.

As Goodwin was assaulting the woman, Miscavage left the house but was detained by police.

Goodwin fled the house on foot and was spotted near the Ken Pollock Apartments on Depot Street, Glen Lyon, by a Nanticoke police officer transporting Miscavage, court records say.

During the confrontation, court records say, Goodwin managed to steal the Nanticoke police cruiser with Miscavage in the rear seat.

Police searched the area and eventually recovered the stolen Nanticoke police cruiser in an alley near East Main Street in Glen Lyon.

Court records say video footage from inside the Nanticoke police cruiser showed Miscavage telling Goodwin to run away before the cruiser was located.

Police allege Miscavage conspired with Goodwin to burglarize the house on Orchard Street and assaulting the woman.

Goodwin was arraigned by District Judge Michael Dotzel of Wilkes-Barre Township on four counts each of aggravated assault and simple assault, two counts of terroristic threats, and one count…

Nanticoke Area’s Zack Fox Leads the Miners Over the Pioneers 42-6 –

Written by: David Mika on Sunday, June 2nd, 2024. Follow David Mika on Twitter.

WEST PITTSTON — It was the Zack Fox show.

Fox rushed for 144 yards and two rushing touchdowns. He had an 87-yard kickoff return to lead the Miners over the Pioneers 42-, Saturday night in the 73rd Annual UNICO All-Star Football Classic.

Fox also had an interception right before halftime and was later named the George Curry MVP for his performance Saturday night. Fox plans to play football at Lackawanna College this fall.

The story of the first half was the rushing attack of Fox, Hazleton Area’s Brady Mizenko and Wilkes-Barre’s Howie Shiner. The trio combined rushing was 286 yards.

The Miners ate up most of the time in the first quarter. The 15-play drive was capped off by quarterback Drew DeLucca of Pittston Area who dove into the end zone for the first score of the game.

Fox scored the next two touchdowns for the Miners with runs of 18 and 44 yards.

The defensive play of the night came from Hazleton Area’s Peter Youngcourt. Berwick’s quarterback Ethan Lear fumbled the ball on the sack. Youngcourt scooped up the fumble and dove into the end zone for an eight-yard touchdown. Shiner caught a two-point conversion pass from DeLucca.
At halftime the Miners led 26-0.

The Pioneers’ offense finally got going on the first possession of the second half. Isaiah Cobb from Wyoming Valley West had runs of 12, 17 and 10, setting up his one-yard touchdown run.

Cobb led the Pioneers rushing last night. He finished with 77 yards.

The Pioneers didn’t have much time to celebrate the touchdown. Fox took the kickoff and went 87 yards down the sideline for the score.

They…
