Thomas L. Grant – Wilkes-Barre Citizens’ Voice

Thomas L. Grant OBITUARY

Thomas L. Grant, 76, of Edwardsville and formerly Nanticoke, passed away early Monday morning, Dec. 23, 2013, at home following an illness.

Born on April 11, 1937, in Nanticoke, he was a son of the late Otto and Edith Lux Grant. He resided most of his life at his home at East Green and Chestnut streets, Nanticoke, until moving to Edwardsville in 2010.

He graduated from Nanticoke High School, Class of 1955, and from August 1955 to 1958, he served in the U.S. Army. He was stationed in Germany, attaining the rank of Specialist 4. He also served as a reservist until 1961.

Early in life he worked in the breaker of the Loomis Colliery and later was a machinist at Kenar Machine shop, Wilkes-Barre, and Sandvik Steel Company, Mountain Top. He was also a self-employed General Contractor for many years. In later years he worked in maintenance at First Hospital, Wilkes-Barre, and last at Convention Hall, Pittston, until retiring in 1999.

He was an active member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, and served on the Board of Church Council. He also used his mechanical talent doing repairs and maintenance of the church and parsonage for many years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Dwyer, and a brother, Otto Grant Jr.

Surviving is his wife of 49 years, the former Jemiel Shiner; a son, Thomas Grant, Jones Creek, Texas; and daughters, Jemiel Smeltz and her husband, Daniel, Oaks, Pa.; Kimberly MacMullen and her husband, Duncan, Jackson Township; and Ruth Grant, Baltimore, Md.; grandchildren, Zachary and Kara Smeltz and Lauren and Collin MacMullen; a sister, Esther Moyer and her husband, Carl, Dallas; and several nieces and nephews.

Dorothy K. Nasser – Wilkes-Barre Citizens’ Voice

Dorothy K. Nasser OBITUARY

Dorothy K. Nasser, 93, formerly of Robert Street, Sheatown, passed away Sunday, Aug. 11, 2019, at Mercy Center Nursing Unit, Dallas, where she had been a resident for the past 4½ years.

She was born in Nanticoke on March 11, 1926, the daughter of the late Stanley and Anna Kowalski Kamon. She was a member of the graduating class of 1944 of Nanticoke High School.

After graduation, she became employed by the Army services, working as a stenographer in the Artillery Division Cannon Branch at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. Later, as she returned to the local area, she was employed from 1961 to 1989 as the office manager by Brunozzi Chevrolet, Nanticoke, which then became Ertley Motorworld, retiring in 1995.

She was a member of St. Faustina Kowalska Church, Nanticoke, and also the former Holy Child Church, Sheatown, until its closing. She was a former president of the West Side Playground Auxiliary, a member of the Phi Beta Gama and the Confraternity of Christian Mothers of Holy Child Church.

Dorothy was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who loved gardening and sharing her Polish traditions with her family. She taught her children and grandchildren the importance of having a strong work ethic and the need for independence. Most of all, she taught them that family was always the most important thing in their lives and to always help one another.

Dorothy never missed the opportunity to attend any family get-togethers. She never missed a graduation, bridal or baby shower or a wedding for any of and grandchildren. She relished the fact that she could attend the annual family vacation in August every year because she would able to be with, and enjoy, her entire family.

Leonard S. Stigora – Wilkes-Barre Citizens’ Voice

Leonard S. Stigora OBITUARY

Leonard S. Stigora, 92, of 75 Pine Valley Drive, Hunlock Creek, and formerly of Nanticoke, passed away peacefully Saturday afternoon, June 15, 2013, at home with his son and daughter-in-law at his side.

Born on September 26, 1920, in Nanticoke, he was a son of the late Stanley and Frances Nalepka Stigora. He resided in Nanticoke most of his life and was a graduate of Nanticoke High School where he excelled in football. After high school he served in the Civilian Conservation Corps and worked briefly at American Car and Foundry in Berwick, before enlisting in the U.S. Coast Guard. During his service he completed the Columbia University Pharmacy Service School and received the Asiatic-Pacific Area Campaign Medal, Coast Guard Good Conduct Medal, American Area Campaign Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal and World War II Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged on March 5, 1946, attaining the rank of Pharmacist’s Mate 3rd Class. Although he was offered a scholarship to Villanova University following his military service, he opted instead to marry the love of his life, Mary Salkiewicz.

Early in life Mr. Stigora was employed in the mines, and in construction. For a brief time he also resided in Jersey City, NJ working in construction. He was last employed by Proctor and Gamble, Mehoopany, for twelve years, retiring in 1985.

He was a member of St. Faustina Kowalska Parish, Nanticoke, and Holy Trinity Church prior to the consolidation of the parishes and a 63-year member of American Legion Post # 350, Nanticoke. He also loved going to the Rose Tucker Senior Center, Nanticoke.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 62 years, Mary Salkiewicz Stigora, on March 12, 2007; a son, Dr. Leonard J. Stigora, DDS, on May 25, 1991; and sisters,…

Leonard Mazur – Wilkes-Barre Citizens’ Voice

Leonard Mazur OBITUARY

Leonard Mazur, 66, of Orchard Street, Warrior Run, and formerly of Hanover Township, passed away Thursday, June 23, 2016, at home surrounded by his loving family after a brief illness.

He was born in Nanticoke on Nov. 11, 1949, the son of the late Leonard F. and Martha Bonning. He attended Nanticoke area schools and was a former member of Good Shepherd Polish National Church, Plymouth.

He was employed for 42 years as a forklift operator by Metro Wire, Wilkes-Barre.

He was a veteran of the Vietnam War and was proud to serve his country in the U.S. Navy from 1969 to 1971. He was the recipient of the National Defense Medal.

Len was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening and riding his ATV with his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Frank and Minnie Mazur, Plymouth; maternal grandparents, Frease and Stella Bonning, West Nanticoke; and numerous aunts and uncles.

Surviving are his wife of 45 years, the former Barbara (Dombroski) Mazur, at home; and sons, Len Mazur, Hanover Township; and Robert Mazur and his wife, Elfete, Hanover Township.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, with a Blessing service at 10:30 a.m. from George A. Strish Inc. Funeral Home, 105 N. Main St., Ashley.

Interment will be in Good Shepherd Polish National Cemetery, West Nanticoke.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday.

The family would like to express their deep gratitude to Dr. Nicholas Chiumento and the entire staff of Hospice of the Sacred Heart for the wonderful care and compassion given to Len in his time of need.

Patricia M. Filipkowski – Wilkes-Barre Citizens’ Voice

Patricia M. Filipkowski OBITUARY

Patricia M. Filipkowski, 69, of Nanticoke, formerly of the Greenwood section of Moosic, entered eternal rest on Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2018, at St. Luke’s Villa, Wilkes-Barre. Her fiancé David B. Harvey, who was the love of her life and caregiver, was by her side.

Born in Moosic, she was the daughter of the late John and Andrea Banfi Filipkowski. In 1967, she graduated from South Catholic High School. She furthered her education at East Stroudsburg University, where she received her bachelor’s in education.

Prior to her retirement, she worked for the Pennsylvania Department of Welfare as a clerk for 28 years. Patricia was a faithful Catholic and a life member of the former St. Mary of Czestochowa Church, Moosic, where she was the chairwomen of the activities stand. Following the consolidation of her church, she became a member of Divine Mercy Parish.

A woman of many enjoyments, Patricia especially enjoyed flower gardening, listening to polka music, cycling and traveling extensively with her mother. Above all, her favorite enjoyment was being surrounded by her loving family.

In addition to her fiancé, she is survived by two brothers, John Filipkowski and Michael Filipkowski and wife, Maryjean; a nephew, Michael Filipkowski and wife, Danielle; two nieces, Jenna Filipkowski and husband, Jason Mott and Christa Filipkowski and companion, Derek DeSanto; her fiancé’s family, Shannon and Harvey Fung and their son Isaiah; David Harvey and Helen Lagos Harvey.

She was preceded in death by an infant sister, Andrea and a sister-in-law, Linda Filipkowski.

Family and friends are invited to attend Patricia’s funeral, which will begin at 10 a.m. Monday from Semian Funeral Home, 704 Union St., Taylor, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. in Divine Mercy Parish, 312 Davis St., Scranton, by the Rev. Francis L….

Karen Cholewa – Wilkes-Barre Citizens’ Voice

Karen Cholewa OBITUARY

Karen Cholewa, 66, of South Carolina and formerly of Nanticoke, passed away peacefully, Friday, May 30, 2025 at Embrace Hospice House in Myrtle Beach, SC after a courageous battle with PSP disease.

Born in Wilkes-Barre, on September 9, 1958, Karen was the daughter of Edward Chacko, of West Wyoming and the late Ann (Jasulewicz) Chacko.

Karen was a member of St. Faustina Kowalska Church in Nanticoke. She was a graduate of Wyoming Area High School, Class of 1976.

Karen dedicated over 40 years to a fulfilling career as a medical coder. She was a highly experienced and respected professional, working at both Mercy Hospital and Commonwealth Health. In her role, she was known for her dedication and precision, contributing significantly to the efficiency and accuracy of patient billing and record keeping.

Karen was a woman of remarkable strength and unwavering spirit. She faced her illness with dignity and grace, inspiring all who knew her. She will be remembered as a loving daughter, wife, mother and grandmother. Though her presence will be deeply missed, her spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of her family.

In addition to her father, Karen is survived by her husband of 40 years, David Cholewa; her son, David Cholewa Jr. and his fianc, Brandy, SC; her granddaughter, Avery; brothers-in-law and sister-in-law, Richard and Linda Cholewa, Wapwallopen; and Daniel Cholewa, Nanticoke; as well as several aunts, uncles and cousins.

A blessing service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at the Bednarski Funeral Home, 168 Wyoming Ave., Wyoming, with the Rev. John J. Chmil, pastor of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, Swoyersville, officiating.

Family and friends are invited to attend Karen’s viewing which will be held on Monday from 5 to 7 P.M.
