H.S Boys Basketball: Holy Redeemer survives late scare from Nanticoke Area

NANTICOKE — A nine-point lead with 47 seconds left nearly evaporated completely — but Holy Redeemer did just enough, and used up just enough clock, to hang on for the win.

Nanticoke Area’s frantic fourth-quarter comeback fell just a point short, as Redeemer survived some late-game miscues and issues at the free-throw line to beat the Trojans 44-43, improving to 4-1 in Division 2 in the process.

“It got a little hairy, a little helter-skelter on us at the end there, but it’s a road conference victory,” said Redeemer coach Paul Guido. “This is a brutal place to play, we’ve had brutal games with these guys … tonight was just another chapter in that book.”

The Royals broke out of the gates quick, outscoring Nanticoke Area 18-8 after one quarter and holding a lead right around that margin for most of the game, never pulling away but doing a great job defensively to limit Nanticoke Area’s scorers and keep them from making a run.

And then, with under a minute remaining and Holy Redeemer leading 42-33, things began to get a little dicey.

Woes at the free throw line didn’t help — the Royals had multiple fourth-quarter trips to the line that either resulted in a 1-for-2 result or an empty trip. As a team, Redeemer shot 6-for-14 from the stripe in the fourth quarter, leaving the door open for the Trojans.

“I was disappointed with our free throw shooting down the stretch,” Guido said. “It was guys that we want the ball in their hands, we think that they could make them.”

Three-pointers from PJ Remley and Liam Mullery trimmed Redeemer’s lead down to five points, 44-39 with 20 seconds…

Bizarre Yet True: The Peculiar History of an Abandoned Concrete City in Pennsylvania | Jon P

Nestled in the hills of Nanticoke is an abandoned concrete city in Pennsylvania, boasting a fascinating history and an uncertain future. Known as Concrete City, it gained its moniker from the robust concrete houses that marked an early example of tract housing. However, this architectural experiment in Pennsylvania, designed to create seemingly indestructible homes, ultimately resulted in eerie, abandoned ruins.

Referred to as “The Garden City of the Anthracite Region,” Concrete City aimed to offer modern housing for local coal mining employees. Amid various architectural approaches employed by coal companies in the early 1900s, this concrete venture stood out. The durable nature of these buildings, meant to withstand time, has left them standing as haunting remnants of Pennsylvania’s industrial past.

Constructed in the International Style architecture, popularized in the 1920s and 30s for its emphasis on simple, efficient design and optimal interior spaciousness, Concrete City stands out as a unique example. Built in 1911 its distinctive feature is that all its buildings were crafted from concrete.

Each of the 20 houses in Concrete City, available for a monthly rent of $8, boasted seven rooms and was specifically designated for higher-ranking workers such as foremen. The concrete residences were dispersed throughout a central courtyard, featuring amenities such as a pool, baseball field, and tennis courts.

The architectural trial faced its share of challenges. Porous walls led to condensation drips, causing residents’ clothing to freeze in their closets during winter. A more substantial concern was the absence of plumbing. Yet, the primary issue with these entirely concrete structures was the persistent dampness that most families moving in couldn’t overcome.

Beyond the eerie atmosphere of these now-deserted structures, a tragic incident occurred at the community wading pool, resulting in the death of a young boy.

However, the ultimate downfall of this community stemmed from the all-concrete…

H.S. Boys Basketball: Wyoming Area defeats shorthanded Nanticoke Area

EXETER — Wyoming Area climbed to the top of the division on Tuesday night.

Now the job was to stay there Saturday afternoon against a divisional contender besieged by injuries.

The Warriors were able to do so, preventing Nanticoke Area from making much traction in the second half as they posted a 46-37 win in Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 boys basketball.

Wyoming Area improved to 3-0 in the division and 8-4 overall. Anthony DeLucca and Dane Schutter led the offense with 15 points each. Schutter also had nine rebounds. Tyler Sciandra had eight.

Wyoming Area defeated two-time defending divisional champion Holy Redeemer in triple overtime on Tuesday.

“That was certainly something we talked about after the Redeemer game and leading up to the game today,” Wyoming Area coach Anthony Macario said. “About using that game to get in our heads the right way because it’s very easy to let down after such a big win like we had the other night.”

Nanticoke Area fell to 3-2 in the division and 6-9 overall.

Nanticoke Area’s injuries started before the beginning of the season when starting guard Peyton Kepp was lost for the campaign because of a football injury. The Trojans were also minus starter RJ Brogan on Saturday afternoon, but the biggest missing piece no doubt was standout big man Jaidyn Johnson.

Johnson, a two-time Times Leader All-WVC selection in basketball and an all-state pick in football, was injured earlier in the week against Hanover Area. Nanticoke Area coach Zach Pientka didn’t disclose the injury, but Johnson is expected to miss significant time.

Wyoming Area distanced itself from Nanticoke Area early in the fourth quarter. Anthony DeLucca opened with a runner and Brady Noone followed with a pair of inside baskets to…
