Geskey runs wild to advance Dallas to the District Final

Tagged under: District 2, Gameday Hub, News, pfn, Playoffs

John Kotsko | November 11, 2023

It looked like Dallas was going to have their hands full with the Nanticoke Trojans as we hit late in the first quarter. Suddenly that all changed in the blink of an eye. The Mountaineers got a blocked punt that resulted in their first touchdown of the game then recovered a fumble on the next kickoff that made it 14-0 as Dylan Geskey had an outstanding night as he scored five touchdowns as they advanced to the District Final for the first time since 2020 as they defeated Nanticoke 48-22. “Towards the end of the first half, we were spitting and sputtering a little bit and we went in at halftime. We had a pretty quick discussion and leadership took over from there. Came out and handled things we should have in the second half.” said Dallas head coach Rich Mannello.

The Mountaineers started with the ball and drove all the way to the Nanticoke 17 yard line with a fourth and 6 but the Trojans defense held and got the ball back for their defense. Nanticoke went three and out on their first drive of the game. Dallas punted on their next possession and was able to pin the Trojans at their own 8 yard line. The Mountaineers were able to force a punt and got the block and got the ball at the Nanticoke three yard line. Dylan Geskey scored from three…

H.S Football: Dallas rolls past Nanticoke Area in D2-4A semifinals

DALLAS TWP. — When things aren’t quite going as planned, Dallas knows the solution.

Give the ball to running back Dylan Geskey.

Geskey rushed for 190 yards and five touchdowns the Mountaineers eventually pulled away from Nanticoke Area for a 48-22 victory in a District 2 Class 4A semifinal game Friday night.

“When we had to push, old number 4 (Geskey) took over,” said Dallas coach Rich Mannello after running down a list of issues that hampered his team. “That’s the kind of back that he is. When we’re struggling and not firing on all cylinders, you hand it to that guy and he can get downhill.

“He’s something. What a football player.”

Dallas (12-0) will host the championship game next Friday, taking on Valley View (10-2). Valley View defeated Wyoming Area 20-0 in the other semifinal. Nanticoke Area finished its season at 7-5.

Geskey scored three consecutive touchdowns in the second half, with his third at 10:45 of the fourth quarter bringing on the 35-point mercy rule.

“At halftime, we came out with a plan, stuck to it and got it done,” said Geskey, who carried the ball 27 times.

Dallas had a first-half plan, although the results weren’t as anticipated.

The Mountaineers were stopped on their first two possessions. They had an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty after scoring a touchdown. The passing game misfired on a couple potentially long gains. And punter Rowan Laubach, a soccer player by trade, had to try to run for a first down after a high punt snap.

“I’m not happy, to be honest with you,” Mannello said. “If we’re going to come out here and win a championship seven days from now, we have work to do.”

Special teams and defense helped Dallas build a…

Nanticoke man arraigned on threatening judges, prosecutors

WILKES-BARRE — When Jacob R. Cartwright was jailed due to a protection-from-abuse violation and faced forthcoming charges he yelled multiple threats directed at three Luzerne County judges and two assistant district attorneys, he cut himself and wrote in his own blood the name of a deceased corrections officer on a cell wall, according to court records.

Cartwright further yelled threats directed at corrections officers at the county correctional facility, pledging to kill them and take pictures of their bodies, court records say.

Cartwright will remain jailed without bail, which was denied by District Judge James Dixon of Hazle Township on Thursday when he was arraigned on six counts each of terroristic threats and harassment, five counts of retaliation against prosecutor or judicial officer, three counts of disorderly conduct and a single count of obstruction of justice.

According to the criminal complaint filed by county detectives and the sheriff’s office:

Cartwright appeared before Judge Richard Hughes on an allegation of indirect contempt of court due to a protection-from abuse order against him on Oct. 25. The hearing was held in Courtroom Two on the third floor of the courthouse.

Nearing the end of the proceeding, Hughes found Cartwright guilty of indirect contempt of court.

Cartwright began playing with a cellular phone as Hughes was continuing with the proceeding.

Cartwright’s behavior changed and became aggressive as he yelled multiple threats using obscene language directed at Hughes and two assistant district attorneys.

Hughes revoked Cartwright’s bail resulting in being taken into custody.

Cartwright continued his verbal assault by yelling threats toward Hughes and Judges Stefanie Salavantis and Tarah Toohil, including saying he knows where the judges live.

Sheriff deputies took custody of Cartwright and escorted him out of the courtroom without resistance.

After Cartwright was…

H.S. Football: Nanticoke Area, Crestwood have date with destiny

Extrapolation. The process when applied to the District 2 football power rankings during the season seemed impractical.

Too many games, too many variables to figure out how the seedings would eventually shake out. Perhaps that’s why Dallas coach Rich Mannello said a few weeks back he’d wait until the completion of Week 10 to see who his Mountaineers would play in the District 2 Class 4A quarterfinals.

However, there is one game that seemed destine since about midseason and it will come to fruition Friday night — Nanticoke Area (6-4) at Crestwood (5-5). The only suspense was whether Nanticoke Area would unseat Crestwood for the Class 4A fourth seed and a home game.

Alas, that didn’t happen. Nor was it expected. Things played out as anticipated except for Crestwood’s loss last Friday at North Pocono.

Crestwood lost its first three games, all by seven points, to the three teams which occupy the top-three seeds — Dallas, Valley View and Wyoming Area. So by Week 4 (extrapolating here), it seemed unlikely the Comets weren’t going to pass any of those teams.

Nanticoke Area went on a run after a 1-3 start to climb to the fifth spot in the D2-4A standings. All the teams below the Trojans were either struggling or knocking each other off. Hence, the fifth spot seemed their landing spot.

“We played the in the district last year in the first round,” Nanticoke Area coach Run Bruza said. “They’re a good team. They are a running team. Coach Arc (Ryan Arcangeli) and his staff do a nice job. I wish we had them at home.”

Crestwood won last year 61-7 on its way to the district championship and an eventual season-ending loss in the PIAA Class 4A state semifinals. The…

Students Learn First-Hand About Emergency Preparedness

Four University of Scranton students participated in an emergency management drill in Luzerne County for the Susquehanna Steam Electric Station. The students are all members of W3USR: The University of Scranton Amateur Radio Club, pursuing majors offered through the Department of Physics and Engineering and the Computing Sciences Department.

“The students were participating in the drill as members Luzerne County Amateur Radio Emergency Services at the City of Nanticoke Emergency Operations Center (EOC). … An important part of the EOC is communications between the Municipal and County EOC,” said Dave Skoniecki, an emergency preparedness coordinator for Susquehanna Steam Electric Station, explaining that each municipal EOC provides a back-up means of communication in case the primary communication channel becomes unavailable. “The Luzerne County Amateur Radio Emergency Services plays an important role in these drills and exercises and we greatly appreciate the participation of The University of Scranton students in the community.”

The Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) consists of trained radio amateurs who provide public service communications support. Trained amateur radio operators serve communities when storms or other disasters damage critical communication infrastructure, including cell towers, and wired and wireless networks. Amateur radio can function completely independently of the internet and phone systems. An amateur radio station can be set up almost anywhere in minutes.

University students who participated were: James P. (JP) Fox, Hillsborough, New Jersey, a computer science major in his senior year at Scranton; Gerard N. Piccini, Monroe Township, New Jersey, an electrical engineering major in his junior year; Thomas J. Pisano, Staten Island, New York, an electrical engineering major in his junior year; and Stephen Salamon, Wayne, New Jersey, a mechanical engineering major in his freshman year at Scranton.

Nathaniel Frissell, Ph.D., assistant professor physics and electrical engineering, serves as moderator for W3USR: The University of Scranton Amateur Radio Club.
