The Board of Public Works approved Maryland Department of Natural Resources items including more than $12.9 million in grants to local governments and land trusts to preserve and protect land, and provide recreational opportunities for Marylanders.

Program Open Space – Local provides funding for county and municipal governments for the planning, purchase and development of recreational land or facilities.

A total of $11.98 million in Program Open Space – Local was approved for 8 projects, including a $5.4 million grant for the acquisition of 5.4 acres for a future indoor and outdoor recreation complex.

The facility, located in Anne Arundel County, will be named the Edgewater Community Park – Lee Family Community Center.

“Program Open Space continues to leverage state money with local support for recreation facilities in our communities,” said Hilary Bell, director of land acquisition and planning for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. “These projects in turn provide Marylanders with proven health benefits for citizens, protection of open space from development, and investment in our local economies.”

Additional approvals include:

$800,000 from the Local Parks and Playgrounds Infrastructure Program for renovations to Rosemary Hills – Lyttonsville Local Park in Montgomery County. The Local Parks and Playgrounds Infrastructure Program was funded in FY 2022 and FY 2023 to provide grant funds primarily to local governments for park and recreation projects.
More than $140,000 in Rural Legacy funding was granted to The Conservation Fund for a conservation easement on 47 acres in the Nanticoke Rural Legacy Area in Dorchester County, thereby permanently protecting prime agricultural land which is part of a large block of working lands in the Nanticoke River watershed. No one will confuse Pennsylvania with states like California and Texas when it comes to renowned Mexican food. But thanks to a growing Latino population, the northeastern part of the commonwealth boasts a vibrant mix of locally-owned Mexican restaurants, Tex-Mex joints, and taquerias.

As the Latino community grows in Northeastern Pennsylvania, Hispanic entrepreneurs are helping to revive a culture of small business. And many of these businesses are culinary gems.

We’ve put together a list of some of the best Taco Tuesday deals at restaurants in NEPA. Many of these restaurants are Latino-owned and serve cuisine the chefs grew up eating, while others proudly serve Americanized fusion food. And some restaurants may go all out for Taco Tuesday while others simply offer affordable tacos!

Picosita Tacos – Nanticoke

Picosita Tacos is a genuine, family-owned taqueria that got its start as a food truck in Mountain Top. On Tuesdays in its brick-and-mortar location in Nanticoke, the restaurant celebrates Taco Tuesday at lunchtime (between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.) with a special offering of four tacos for $10. What excellent motivation to take a lunch break!

La Cantina Amigon – Wilkes-Barre

The Wilkes-Barre Mexican restaurant that’s now located in the former Hottle’s Restaurant space is intent on sharing authentic Mexican culture with the Wilkes-Barre community. But La Cantina Amigon is also not opposed to merging cultures for the benefit of all, in this case meaning more tasty food options, as the restaurant’s menu also features hamburgers and wings. Each Tuesday, you can take advantage of La Cantina Amigon’s Taco Tuesday special — three tacos for $10.

FLAMBOROUGH, Ont. – A coyote pup is safe and sound after a quick response by two Hamilton Animal Services employees.

Animal Services received reports from several residents that there was a sickly looking coyote carrying a little pup through their Carlisle neighbourhood.

When Officer Joseph LaMantia and licensing student Katie McLean arrived, they found the pup in a driveway, as temperatures were beginning to fall.

Animal Services manager Kate Beaton said the pup was alert and breathing, but needed medical attention when it was rescued.

“The health and safety of the city’s wildlife is a top priority,” Beaton told FlamboroughToday.

The pup was taken to Hobbitstee Wildlife Refuge in Nanticoke, where it is being rehabilitated. Animal Services says anyone who would like to donate money for its care should consider donating to the refuge itself.

Beaton said the experience has made McLean, who has been a student with the service for five months, consider working there full time.

Coyote mom still in wild

Animal Services says it is balancing concerns for the pup’s mother, which was described as “thin and sickly,” with the risk of taking her away from the rest of her pups.

Beaton said it isn’t common for a coyote to drop its pups when moving them, and said the coyote may have been startled by “an unanticipated interaction with a human, dog or vehicle.”

Animal Services is on the lookout for the mom, but said she is likely nearby in the woods, where there is a ravine, creeks and hiding spots. The service is warning residents not to startle or disturb the coyote, but to report sightings to Animal Services. They can be reached at 905-574-3433.

Beaton reminds residents to leash their dogs, not feed coyotes and keep your compost bins raised.

Imperial Oil Limited IMO reported first-quarter FY24 EPS of C$2.23, higher than C$2.13 a year ago.

Net income declined to C$1.20 billion from C$1.25 billion a year ago, reflecting an expected seasonal decrease in Upstream production volume.

Total revenue and other income stood at C$12.3 billion vs. C$12.1 billion a year ago.

Upstream production averaged 421,000 gross oil-equivalent barrels per day, up from 413,000 gross oil-equivalent barrels per day a year ago. At Kearl asset, quarterly total gross production averaged 277,000 barrels per day (196,000 barrels Imperial’s share, the highest ever first-quarter production in the asset’s history),

Downstream throughput averaged 407,000 barrels daily, reflecting Nanticoke’s highest first-quarter throughput. Refinery capacity utilization was 94%, and petroleum product sales were 450,000 barrels daily.

Average bitumen realized prices increased to C$66.56 per barrel from C$50.33 a year ago, and synthetic crude oil sales price declined to C$93.51 from C$102.45 the prior year.

Operating cash flow stood at C$1.08 billion, and capital and exploration expenditures came in at C$496 million in the quarter.

Dividend: The company paid C$278 million in dividends to shareholders in the quarter.

Imperial declared a second-quarter dividend of C$0.60 per share, payable on July 1 to shareholders of record as of June 3.

In March, the company said that the regulatory filings began for the proposed Pathways Alliance carbon capture and storage project, starting with transportation network applications.

Brad Corson, chairman, president and chief executive officer, said, “The regulatory applications represent an important milestone. Our industry has an important role to play in the energy transition, and Imperial remains well positioned to continue pursuing strategic opportunities to reduce emissions, provide economic benefits for local and Indigenous communities and deliver value for our shareholders.”
