Nanticoke receives $1.1 million

A long-time eyesore in Luzerne County can now be torn down, thanks to new state funding. Officials say it’s a step in the right direction.

NANTICOKE, Pa. — From Skycam 16, you can see the remnants of a silk factory turned warehouse turned bowling alley along East Washington Street in Nanticoke. It’s been empty for over a decade, and police say it’s a public-safety issue.

“We have major problems here with people squatting and coming in and out of the building. The building right now is about ready to collapse in certain areas, so it is very unsafe to be in or near,” said Nanticoke Police Chief Michael Roke.

“If somebody gets hurt inside their building, it just makes our job a lot harder because the building itself is very unstable,” said Nanticoke Fire Chief Mark Boncal.

Funding is on the way from the state through a community safety project to take the building down.

“This grant was approved by the Commonwealth Financing Authority on Friday. The city was awarded $1.1 million, give or take around that number. And this is the biggest piece of that puzzle,” said Cody Forgach, a staff member for State Rep. Gerald Mullery.

It’s exciting news for people who call Nanticoke home.

“They’re thrilled. I mean, it’s been sitting like this for so long,” said Mayor Kevin Coughlin

The mayor hopes this will be a future site for residential development.

“Down the road, that Nacero gas plant coming up in Newport. I’m sure we’re going to need housing for that too. “

City officials hope the demolition will take place in the fall and cost close to $500,000.

The remainder of the grant will be used to provide the police department with two new cruisers and a fire department with a new engine, all of…

Luzerne County DA discusses large fight at First Hospital

That took place on Saturday in Kingston.

KINGSTON, Pa. — In a news conference on Monday, Luzerne County District Attorney Sam Sanguedolce explained that an incident at First Hospital in Kingston started as a fight between two patients around 7:15 p.m. Saturday.

“At eight o’clock, it was reported to be a full-on large-scale incident involving approximately 14 juveniles who were inside that facility. The staff at that point had called in to indicate that they had barricaded themselves at a nursing station,” explained Sanguedolce.

The DA says five people were treated for injuries and released, including the two teenage boys believed to have started the incident, a teenage girl not involved in the fight, and two staff members.

“We are mindful that the subjects of this investigation are in First Valley Hospital for the purposes of obtaining mental treatment. So that is factoring into a large part of our investigation,” added Sanguedolce.

Officials in Luzerne County say the incident prompted a response from police and first responders across the Wyoming Valley, who encountered some issues accessing the building.

“First Valley Hospital is a secure facility. Due to the nature of the work that they perform there,” added Sanguedolce. “The police had great difficulty gaining access to certain areas of the hospital. That is something Chief Kotchik, and I intend to address with the administration to protect the safety of the staff there and also to protect anyone entering for purposes of emergency services.”

The DA says he also wants to address the lack of security he believes was on hand at the facility.

“In my opinion, there was not enough security there. And I don’t know if that’s a function of the regular staffing or the shortage that we’re seeing and personnel pretty much across the country. So, we’re at…

Center dedicated in honor of Jane Clifton Ashford

There were accolades and some tears flowing during a June 4 ceremony to officially open the Jane Clifton Ashford Center at Camp Arrowhead, which has been under the auspices of the Episcopal Church of Delaware since it opened in 1954.

During a moving part of the ceremony, Nanticoke Indian tribe members Ragghi Rain and Herbert Jackson offered blessings for the new building and camp. The outdoor area has been named Prayer of Four Directions Terrace in honor of the Nanticoke Indian tribe and the Rev. Calhoun Wick, who has been a strong supporter of the camp for decades. In addition, a new garden has been named the Nanticoke Garden.

Camp Director Teri Valente said the camp was once Nanticoke land where they hunted and fished. The name of the camp came from the numerous arrowheads that have been found on the property.

The old dining hall dated back to when the camp opened. The new dining hall and retreat facility is an increase from the existing 5,800 square feet to 10,000 square feet and includes a new kitchen doubled in size, along with a grilling station, kitchen garden, rainwater collection tank, outdoor classroom, reception area, gathering and dining terrace, welcome plaza and butterfly garden. The existing bell tower, named in honor of longtime cook Delma Batson, has been moved to the terrace.

The center is sponsored by the family of Jane Clifton Ashford, including her husband, Ted, and sons Ted III and Tim. Clifton Ashford, who passed away in 2003 at the age of 66, was not only committed to the Episcopal Church and Camp Arrowhead, but other numerous educational, historic preservation and human services projects.

Steering committee members, who were charged with raising $5.5 million, said it’s a real miracle that the capital campaign goal was reached during the…

Bandits rookie Tehoka Nanticoke finds the net at right time in Game 1 of NLL finals

After scoring one goal in his first three playoff games, rookie Tehoka Nanticoke said he knew he had more to give to the Buffalo Bandits in their pursuit of a National Lacrosse League championship.

In Saturday’s 15-14 victory against the Colorado Mammoth in Game 1 of the finals, Nanticoke tied his career high with five goals and added two assists, earning him second star of the game and the right to wear the Bandits’ heavyweight player of the game belt.

“He just looked more confident today and seemed like he was going to the net more often,” coach John Tavares said. “He was just playing his game … and today he didn’t hold back.”

He had four consecutive Bandits goals – their final two of the second quarter and their first two of the third quarter. Nanticoke helped Buffalo keep the lead despite Colorado’s relentless offense, as the Mammoth cut a 5-1 deficit at the start of the second quarter to 9-8 at halftime. His two goals in the opening 5:30 of the second half gave the Bandits an 11-8 lead.

Nanticoke didn’t score the game-winner. That credit went to Nick Weiss on a breakaway with 51 seconds remaining, but his performance was one of the biggest reasons the Bandits head to Colorado for Game 2 on Saturday with a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series.

Nick Weiss' goal in final minute lifts Buffalo Bandits in Game 1 of National Lacrosse League finals

The Bandits are trying to win their fifth championship in franchise history and first since 2008.

“This was a game that I’ve dreamed of since I was holding a stick, wearing a JT (Tavares) jersey running around the back yard,” Nanticoke said.

Nanticoke, originally from Six Nations,…
