Senator Yudichak not seeking re-election

While Senator Yudichak does not know his plans after politics, he plans to continue serving his district until his term ends in November.

NANTICOKE, Pa. — After the state courts rejected the last-ditch appeals, the new legislative districts were officially in place.

Senator John Yudichak had to make a decision.

His 14th District seat was being moved out of northeastern Pennsylvania entirely.

And a race for another state Senate seat would likely pit him against another incumbent.

In the end, Yudichak chose retirement after 24 years in Harrisburg.

“It is time; I have four beautiful daughters. They’re moving on with milestones in their own lives. I’ll like to dedicate myself to them over the next several years,” said Yudichak.

Senator Yudichak is the only independent in the state Senate.

He’s proud of his efforts to unite politicians across the aisle.

“I’ve always been lucky. When I was a democrat, as an independent, in a republican caucus, I’ve always been able to forge good bipartisan coalitions,” said Yudichak.

He chooses to focus on the positive.

“We’ve made great progress, but there’s a lot of progress to come over the next few decades. I want to play a role in that in some way to support my friends and support the good people who have always given me everything that I’ve always dreamed of by being their state senator,” said Yudichak.

While Senator Yudichak does not know his plans after politics, he plans to continue serving his district until his term ends in November.

June O. Burton, excelled at everything

June O. Burton, 88, departed this life peacefully Saturday, March 12, 2022, in Wilmington. June was born  Sept. 4, 1933, in Millsboro daughter to the late Eunice P. Harmon and late Travanian (Buddie) Wright.  She had a half-sister, the late Derinda Morris; and a half-brother, Travis (Poo) Johnson. June grew up in Millsboro and believed there was no better place to live and raise a family.

She was affectionately known as “Bugs,” and attended the Nanticoke Indian School, where she completed schooling through the 8th grade. She subsequently left school, like many people of her heritage during that time, to help care for her family. She became a devoted housekeeper both inside and outside the Harmon household.  She quickly learned the truth behind the saying “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger,” as she indeed became stronger.

Bugs worked for over 35 years at Atlantic Sands Hotel in Rehoboth Beach and worked her way from being a housekeeper to the supervisor of the entire Atlantic Sands cleaning staff. Additionally, she had the responsibility of maintaining and cleaning the homes of the Atlantic Sands’ owners, yes, she was that good! Bugs always worked hard and was known for her reliable work ethic.  Even without a formal education, she was a problem solver who excelled at everything which included taking care of her loved ones. Bugs was a creative homemaker with a unique eye for decorating and unparalleled cooking skills. Bugs accepted Christ into her life and walked with Jesus as an active member of the Indian Mission United Methodist Church, and a lifelong member of the Nanticoke Indian Association.  Her Native American name, given to her on June 9, 1990, was Lonesome Wolf.

Bugs married Harry “Clayie” Burton, the love of her life, June 3, 1954, in Salisbury, Md. During this…

Adjusting delivery services to offset high fuel costs

Many businesses and organizations are having to make changes to the way they operate.

NANTICOKE, Pa. — Stan Gorgas spends a lot of time behind the wheel as a delivery driver for Brick House Pizza in Nanticoke. He’s been keeping a close eye on the price at the pump.

“I went to work and watched as I drove back on different deliveries, and the price just kept going up, up, up. It was $50 one week. Now we’re spending $80.”

The owners of Brick House Pizza started paying the drivers extra money out of their own pockets to offset high fuel costs.

But drivers say the majority of their tips are still going toward filling their tanks.

“Some days, they’ll do 50 to 80 miles on their own car,” said co-owner Ken Hillman.

So Ken and Debbie Hillman decided to tack on a $1 delivery charge that will go directly to the drivers.

“We held off as long as we could with raising our prices, and for two years since we opened, we were doing free delivery,” Debbie said. “But the gas prices are just sky-high now, and it doesn’t seem like it’s gonna end any time soon.”

Kevin Young sometimes travels more than 60 miles round trip to deliver pet food to people in need.

He’s the president of Pawsitively for the Animals, a nonprofit based in Scranton that provides financial assistance and supplies to pet owners.

The organization can’t afford to spend money on gas.

“So my wife and I are eating this bill. We always have. But when we started the program, gas was $2.20 a gallon,” Young said.

Young decided to limit deliveries to one day in Lackawanna County and one day a week in Luzerne County. He’s trying to consolidate as many deliveries as he…

NANTICOKE — Greater Nanticoke Area School District’s spring break will run April 14-16, exactly as scheduled, Superintendent Ron Grevera announced at the start of Thursday’s regular monthly meeting. But that’s actually unusual, he added after the meeting.

Spring break is often eaten up by snow make up days, something that has become a rarity in schools since the COVID-19 pandemic struck in 2020. Districts developed extensive remote-only education abilities on the Internet, and the state introduced “Flexible Instruction Days” as a recognized use of the technology, which most local districts have been taking advantage of this winter.

One change was made to the April calendar: The monthly board meeting was moved to April 21. It had been slated, as usual, for the second Thursday of the Month, but this April that will be the Thursday before Easter.

The board also:

• Accepted the resignations of Paul Gerrity and Chynna Jackson as assistant softball coaches, School Psychologist Rachel Kozich, and cleaners Bonnie Long and Serah Purcel

• Approved use of the Elementary Center gym by Nanticoke Area Little League for player tryouts March 19-20.

• Approved the purchase…
