A well-known part of a college campus in Luzerne County is getting a facelift. Whether it’s cause for celebration or mourning, depends on who you ask.

NANTICOKE, Pa. — What is it about a flight of stairs that has close to 100 community college alumni returning to their old stomping grounds just to have one last go at them?

We’ll let 1990 grad Nancy Burkland explain.

“It’s memories, memories that we’re always going to have. And it’s sad that new kids coming in aren’t going to have those memories,” Burkland said. “We have to walk the steps one last time because they’re infamous!”

If you’ve ever taken a class at Luzerne County Community College in Nanticoke, you’ve likely had to climb those infamous steps.

And it’s nearly impossible to do so without forming an opinion on them.

Some go out of their way to avoid scaling the 54-step stairway to campus.

“I always park at building 3, and I take the long way,” says Kelsey Hardy.

Alumna Bonnie Orth remembers, “avoiding them and walking up and down the grass. There’s 1 or 2 times I did it barefoot because I had heels on that were killing my feet.”

Others embrace the challenge.

“I just love the steps. I look forward to them. I purposely park here, even when my classes are over there,” said Nikolene Espinal.

As a mom working on getting her degree, Espinal appreciates the chance to cram in a cardio workout on her way to class.

“This is what I enjoy! I lunge up and down them!”

Because of the awkward size of these steps, everyone has their own unique strategy to best navigate them. You’re either a “two-step person” or a “one-step person.”

“The house the school was kept in,” William Morgan (no relation to the author of this article), “was pine slabs, notched up, and covered with boards and slabs, a hole cut at the top of the roof at one end to let out the smoke.”

His second school was, “built in the woods and was some(what) warmer in winter and plenty of lizards, scorpions and snakes about in the summer time.”

Born in Northwest Fork Hundred in 1780, Morgan was 6-years-old when he first went to school. In spite of his reptilian classmates, Morgan received a rudimentary education that enabled him to pursue a variety of occupations.

As an adult, he worked as a carpenter, studied medicine under a local doctor, and became a Methodist preacher. He lived much of his life near Seaford; and he kept a journal of the important happenings in his life.

Toward the end of his life, he wrote a short autobiography that dramatically illustrated how southern Delaware changed during the first half of the 19th century.

What do the Mispillion, Broadkill and Nanticoke rivers and Broad Creek have in common, except being waterways in Sussex County?

They were all sites of shipbuilding enterprises in the 19th century and early 20th century.

Shipyards in Milton, Milford, Seaford, Laurel and Bethel were mainstays of the small towns’ economies, and by best estimates, about 1,000 wooden ships were built during a 50-year period.

After several months of building, a ship launching was a major event in small towns. Schools and businesses were closed as nearly everyone gathered on launch day.

So why Sussex County? An abundance of white oak forests and easy access to major waterways, including the Chesapeake and Delaware bays, were the major factors.

You would be hard-pressed to find any remnants of this industry that once thrived, except in one location. Thanks to the Lofland family, the site of the Vinyard Shipyard along the Mispillion River in downtown Milford has been preserved. The rest are marked with historic signs and markers.

The industry flourished until transportation modes began to change throughout the country in the late 19th century, including steam-powered ships, trains and automobiles. Some shipyards were able to adapt to the changes, but most did not.

In Bethel, along Broad Creek, which is a tributary of the Nanticoke River that empties into Chesapeake Bay, many different types of ships were built, but sailing rams were unique to the small town. They were highly sought after by Chesapeake Bay watermen because of their flat hulls.

About 40 vessels were constructed in Bethel up until 1918, according to author James Marvil in his book, “Sailing Rams: A History of Sailing Ships Built in and near Sussex County, Delaware.”

Nanticoke receives $1.1 million

A long-time eyesore in Luzerne County can now be torn down, thanks to new state funding. Officials say it’s a step in the right direction.

NANTICOKE, Pa. — From Skycam 16, you can see the remnants of a silk factory turned warehouse turned bowling alley along East Washington Street in Nanticoke. It’s been empty for over a decade, and police say it’s a public-safety issue.

“We have major problems here with people squatting and coming in and out of the building. The building right now is about ready to collapse in certain areas, so it is very unsafe to be in or near,” said Nanticoke Police Chief Michael Roke.

“If somebody gets hurt inside their building, it just makes our job a lot harder because the building itself is very unstable,” said Nanticoke Fire Chief Mark Boncal.

Funding is on the way from the state through a community safety project to take the building down.

“This grant was approved by the Commonwealth Financing Authority on Friday. The city was awarded $1.1 million, give or take around that number. And this is the biggest piece of that puzzle,” said Cody Forgach, a staff member for State Rep. Gerald Mullery.

It’s exciting news for people who call Nanticoke home.

“They’re thrilled. I mean, it’s been sitting like this for so long,” said Mayor Kevin Coughlin

The mayor hopes this will be a future site for residential development.

“Down the road, that Nacero gas plant coming up in Newport. I’m sure we’re going to need housing for that too. “

City officials hope the demolition will take place in the fall and cost close to $500,000.

That took place on Saturday in Kingston.

KINGSTON, Pa. — In a news conference on Monday, Luzerne County District Attorney Sam Sanguedolce explained that an incident at First Hospital in Kingston started as a fight between two patients around 7:15 p.m. Saturday.

“At eight o’clock, it was reported to be a full-on large-scale incident involving approximately 14 juveniles who were inside that facility. The staff at that point had called in to indicate that they had barricaded themselves at a nursing station,” explained Sanguedolce.

The DA says five people were treated for injuries and released, including the two teenage boys believed to have started the incident, a teenage girl not involved in the fight, and two staff members.

“We are mindful that the subjects of this investigation are in First Valley Hospital for the purposes of obtaining mental treatment. So that is factoring into a large part of our investigation,” added Sanguedolce.

Officials in Luzerne County say the incident prompted a response from police and first responders across the Wyoming Valley, who encountered some issues accessing the building.

“First Valley Hospital is a secure facility. Due to the nature of the work that they perform there,” added Sanguedolce. “The police had great difficulty gaining access to certain areas of the hospital. That is something Chief Kotchik, and I intend to address with the administration to protect the safety of the staff there and also to protect anyone entering for purposes of emergency services.”

The DA says he also wants to address the lack of security he believes was on hand at the facility.

“In my opinion, there was not enough security there. And I don’t know if that’s a function of the regular staffing or the shortage that we’re seeing and personnel pretty much across the country. So, we’re at…
