Nanticoke Indian Association to hold 46th annual powwow Sept. 7-8

Powwow flyer 2024.jpg

The Nanticoke Tribal Association’s annual powwow is set for Sept. 7-8.

Coastal Point | Submitted

“In the powwow circle we celebrate life and honorable deeds for both the living and those who have passed on. We’re taught that by honoring individuals we encourage the next generation to embrace the unlimited possibilities of the world,” Nanticoke Indian Association representatives said this week in announcing their 46th annual powwow, set for Sept. 7-8.

This year’s powwow will feature authentic native crafts, clothing, jewelry, books and commemorative items of the Nanticoke Tribe that will be available for purchase throughout the weekend, as well as Native American food and soft drinks.

One of the dances attendees might observe this year at the powwow is the Grass Dance.

“It is believed to have originated with the Omaha Tribe. All stories of the dance point to the dance as ceremonial. In the South, some tribes believe it was connected to a warrior society and that scalps were tied to the dancers’ clothing to celebrate victory in battle. The Grass Dance, to the northern tribes, is believed to be a blessing ceremony for new ground.

“The dancers would trample the grass down in preparation for a village and grass was tied to the dancer. As the dancer moves, the fringe attached to his regalia sways as if to simulate the natural movement of tall prairie grass. The dance is said to represent the balance of life. The dancer must perform the same move on either the right or left. The dancer’s regalia is covered with yarn and ribbons that sway showing lots of color.”

More than 30 Native American crafts and food vendors will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Good Morning Delmarva discusses the 46th annual Nanticoke Indian Powwow

WMDT – Have you ever attended the Nanticoke Indian Powwow before?

If not, here’s your chance as it will be returning for its 46th year on September 7th and 8th!

Hosted by Delaware’s first recognized tribe, the Nanticoke Indian Tribe, the event has always been a way for the community to gather and give thanks.

We spoke with Dr. Bonnie Hall whose native name is She Who Cares.

She is a past tribal council member and serves as chair for committees on the Nanticoke Indian Association.

She shared a bit of the history behind the powwow and why it continues to grow every year.

Hall tells us that the event over the years has garnered thousands of attendees who want to learn more about their culture and traditions.

She says one of the highlights of the event will be the headlining dancers.

Louis Campbell of Lumbee and Blackfoot descent is a northern traditional dancer. He will serve as the head male dancer.

Angela Gladu of Cree descent is a hip-hop hoop dancer that will be showing off her Jingle dress dancing.

There will also be a car show, an interactive bird show, Aztec dancers, a 9/11 tribute, authentic vendors and much more.

Hall says she hopes these things can attract more young people to the event to learn about their culture.

Again, the two-day event will be held at Hudson fields in Milton from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Adults are 10 dollars, teens are 5 dollars, and kids under 10 are free.

State Police: Lyft driver charged with sexually assaulting customer

Aug. 22—PLYMOUTH TWP. — A driver for ride-share Lyft was arrested on allegations he sexually assaulted a customer on Tuesday.

Edwin Valentin Perez, 39, of Four Seasons Court, Hazle Township, was identified by the victim through online arrangements for the ride-share, according to court records.

Investigators at the Pennsylvania State Police at Wilkes-Barre believe there may be more victims.

“We’re asking anybody else who feels they may be a victim of a similar crime or a similar circumstance or had information about the suspect himself or any other similar incidents to come forward and contact us,” said Trooper William Evans.

According to the criminal complaint:

The victim arranged a ride from Nanticoke to Plymouth through the Lyft app that identified Perez as the driver.

After picking up the victim, Perez stopped at a convenience store in Nanticoke and while crossing the Nanticoke/West Nanticoke Bridge, Perez opened a bottle with a black label, a lightning bolt with the word energy with two cotton balls inside the bottle.

The victim began to feel as though he was being affected by the substance as Perez pulled onto a dirt road with a gate and a shed in Plymouth Township.

Once Perez stopped, the victim reported he felt he was losing consciousness when Perez sexually assaulted him, the complaint says.

Perez then drove the victim to Plymouth dropping him off at a store before speeding away, according to the complaint.

“One of the reason we suspect there may be more victims, we are aware the suspect we have in custody, he is a driver for Lyft and Uber and has given multiple rides in the area over the last few months,” Evans said. “We did have a previous incident with him that did not rise to the level of sexual assault as this one did. It only rose to summary offenses, harassment and disorderly…

Gerth’s goal is to raise awareness of what victims of crime and their families go through in Ontario.

“For those who haven’t had to experience this, I pray you never have to,” said Gerth, speaking to riders and passengers before Saturday’s ride. “No one understands the effects, the pain, the suffering of victim experience until it happens to you.”

About 50 riders and passengers participated in a ‘scenic motorcycle ride’ to Nanticoke Saturday, coming from across southern Ontario, including Brantford, Woodstock and Norfolk County.

Gerth’s daughter, Desiree Gallagher, was a victim of violence. She died in 2015 at age 23.

“My daughter’s story is one of many,” said Gerth. “I choose to talk about my daughter’s tragedy to bring awareness, and I have great support to help me do so. I want to bring awareness to what victims have to go through. It’s a never-ending rollercoaster and a life sentence.

Education emphasized at Nanticoke Indian Powwow

MILTON — The Nanticoke Indian Tribe’s heritage and culture will be showcased Sept. 7-8 with the 46th annual Powwow, a two-day spectacle that has an educational component.

“That is a huge part of the whole event. That is our point, to educate the public on our culture and our heritage,” said Nanticoke Tribe Chief Avery “Leaving Tracks” Johnson. “There are a lot of people that don’t know our history that are from other areas of the country. When they come here, they are on vacation, and they don’t even know that we exist.”

“So, it is a big educational opportunity for people of all ages.”

Native American crafts and food vendors will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. both days of the powwow.

Admission fees are $10 for adults, $5 for ages 11-17 and free to children 10 and under.

The Nanticoke Tribe recently announced two Native American performers will be participating in the upcoming celebration at Hudson Fields.

Louis Campbell, whose Native American heritage is Lumbee/Blackfoot, will serve as the head male dancer, teaming with the Nanticoke Tribe’s Mike Harmon.

“He is very well known throughout the country and has performed at the largest powwow in the country, the Gathering of the Nations,” Chief Johnson said.

Angela Gladu, from the Cree heritage, will showcase her professional hip hop hoop and jingle dress dancing styles. The dancing performance will also feature Adrienne Harmon of the Nanticoke Tribe.

The host drums for the powwow are Red Blanket of New Jersey and Stoney Creek from North Carolina.

The opening ceremony Sept. 7 includes presentation of flags, grand entry and first dance session and will begin at noon. The second dance session is at 4:30 p.m.

Noteworthy for Saturday at 1 p.m. will be a Sept. 11 tribute beginning with a…

Nanticoke Watershed Alliance releases 2023 report card

Dorchester Banner

VIENNA — Each year, the Nanticoke Watershed Alliance (NWA) publishes a report card that evaluates the health of the river and gives it letter grades based on its overall health. These grades come from the information Nanticoke creekwatchers collect.

The Nanticoke Creekwatchers program relies on volunteers who regularly test the river’s water quality. They measure things like pH, oxygen levels, and water clarity at various sites from March to November.

These tests help the organization understand if there are too many nutrients, like nitrogen and phosphorus, in the water. High levels can lead to too much algae.

When algae bloom, they reduce oxygen in the water and block sunlight, harming aquatic life and creating “dead zones” where fish and other organisms can’t survive. Also, some algal blooms are harmful, which can cause illness when contracted by pets or humans.

“It is important that NWA continues to work closely with our Nanticoke Creekwatchers program to keep a close eye on the health of the Nanticoke River,” a statement from the group said. “We must maintain the river to prevent dead zones and keep the river healthy.”

This year, the report shows:

  • Marshyhope Creek and the Delaware Headwaters earned a grade of B-, making them the healthiest areas.
  • The Lower Nanticoke also scored a B-, a positive improvement since 2015.
  • The Upper Nanticoke, Broad Creek, and Lower Creeks received C grades.
  • The Upper Nanticoke and Broad Creek had the lowest grades, continuing a concerning trend. However, there were some improvements:
  • Marshyhope Creek’s nitrogen grade improved from an F in 2022 to a D in 2023.
  • The Lower Nanticoke and Lower Creeks showed better results in phosphorus and chlorophyll levels.
  • Water clarity has either declined or remained the same in most areas. Nevertheless, dissolved oxygen levels are healthy throughout the…
