ODNR, Great Ohio Lodges offering 30% military discount during November

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) has announced that they will be giving a 30% discount to U.S. military members, active duty and veterans, for various services next month.

Those services, according to a press release, include:

  • Camping reservations
  • Getaway rentals
  • State-operated cabins
  • Resort lodge stays

“It is an honor to support the men and women who are and have proudly served our country,” ODNR Director Mary Mertz said in the release. “This is a great way for these heroes to make amazing memories with their families and friends at our award-winning state parks.”

The release states that this is in cooperation with U.S. Hotels. Check availability or make a reservation here for camping, cabins and facilities operate by the state. To get the discount, use code VETERAN25.

“This offer is subject to availability and applies to new reservations at open campgrounds, as well as new cabin reservations at Buck Creek, Cowan Lake, Dillon, Lake Hope, Malabar Farm, Mohican, Pike Lake, and Pymatuning state parks,” the release reads.

U.S. Hotels’ Great Ohio Lodges is also giving the 30% military discount next month for lodge rooms and certain cabins at the following locations:

Joseph Cronk column: Carrying forward Lenape story in Anderson important to community

Anderson’s name carries a history much deeper than most realize. Long before streets and factories, before schools and churches, this land was home to the Miami people.

In the early 1800s the Lenape, also known as the Delaware Indians, settled here through agreement with the Miami. Chief Kikthawenund, remembered to us as Chief Anderson, established a Lenape village on the White River. That settlement, called Wapeminskink or the “Place of the Chestnut Trees,” became an important stop in the Lenape journey west.

August 26- Medical transport was sent to Lenape Hall for a student that dislocated their shoulder. 

August 27- Damage was done to an unattended vehicle in the parking lot behind Dansbury Commons. 

August 27- There was a report of marijuana smoking at the Dave Carlyon Pavilion.

August 27- A student came into the police station to file a hit and run incident in the Lenape parking lot.

Bollinger Celebrates Construction of Future USNS LENNI LENAPE with Houma Keel-Laying Ceremony 

USNS Lenni Lenape is the sixth Bollinger-Built T-ATS 

HOUMA, La. — (October 17, 2025) – Joined by senior U.S. Navy officials and more than 20 officials from the Lenape Nation at Bollinger Houma, Bollinger Shipyards (Bollinger) today officially laid the keel for the future USNS Lenni Lenape, the ninth Navajo-class Towing, Salvage, and Rescue Ship (T-ATS) and the sixth T-ATS vessel being constructed by Bollinger since acquiring the program in April of 2021. 

“Bollinger is grateful for the Navy’s continued confidence in our team to build the Navajo-class Towing, Salvage and Rescue Ships,” said Ben Bordelon, President and CEO of Bollinger Shipyards. “The keel laying of the future USNS Lenni Lenape marks another significant milestone in our partnership, and we are honored to support the Navy’s fleet modernization efforts through the T-ATS program.” 

The keel authenticators were the Hon. Susan Cade, Elder of the Delaware Tribe of Indians, the Hon. Deborah Dotson, Committee Member of the Delaware Nation, and the Hon. Shannon Holsey, President of the Stockbridge-Munsee Community. 

Named to honor the Lenape Nation of Pennsylvania, the future USNS Lenni Lenape (T-ATS 9) will be the first naval vessel to carry the name of the Lenni Lenape tribe, which was the first tribe to sign a treaty with the United States in 1778. 

The Navajo class provides ocean-going tug, salvage, and rescue capabilities to support fleet operations. T-ATS replaces and fulfills the capabilities that were previously provided by the Powhatan-class Fleet Ocean Tug (T-ATF 166) and Safeguard-class Rescue and Salvage Ships (T-ARS 50) class ships. 

In addition to T-ATS 9, Bollinger is constructing USNS Navajo (T-ATS 6), USNS Cherokee Nation (T-ATS 7), USNS Saginaw Ojibwe Anishinabek (T-ATS 8), and USNS Muscogee Creek Nation (T-ATS 10).

Seven years of bad luck for striped bass, survey shows

Striped bass reproduction has remained below average in parts of the Chesapeake Bay since 2018, and this year is no different.

The annual juvenile striped bass surveys from Maryland and Virginia give insight as to how the next generation of striped bass will sustain the population. With continuing poor results, the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission is considering stronger catch limits.

Striped bass are top predators in the Bay and support commercial and recreational fishing. They are found along the East Coast from Canada to Florida, but they spawn and spend the first few years of their lives in the Bay.

The Virginia Institute of Marine Science has conducted its annual survey on striped bass since 1967. This year, scientists caught more than 1,000 juvenile striped bass at 18 sites in the Rappahannock, York and James rivers with a 100-foot seine net. Fish are captured, counted, measured and thrown back.

This year’s survey from Virginia recorded an average of 5.12 juvenile fish per seine net catch, which is below the historic average of 7.77. It’s slightly better than the last two years, but the survey hasn’t found the average level of reproduction since 2022.

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources sampled fish from 22 sites in the Choptank, Nanticoke and Potomac rivers and in the upper Bay. Maryland’s results were even more stark. This year, the young-of-year catch averaged four per seine haul, far below the historical average of 11. This marks the seventh year the striped bass juvenile population hasn’t met that threshold.

Matthew Tyburczy Leads a Balanced Attack to Beat Lenape Valley

Hackettstown hadn’t done well against Lenape Valley recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn’t let the past get in their way on Friday. The Tigers put the hurt on the Patriots with a sharp 36-14 win. The high-flying offensive performance was a huge turnaround for the Tigers considering their eight-point performance the matchup before.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Hackettstown to victory, but perhaps none more so than Matthew Tyburczy, who rushed for 107 yards and two touchdowns on only 12 carries. Another signal caller making a difference was Carter Bujno, who threw for 123 yards and a pair of TDs.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: Hackettstown was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 231 rushing yards. That’s the most rushing yards they’ve managed all season.

The victory got Hackettstown back to even at 4-4. As for Lenape Valley, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 1-8.

Looking ahead, Hackettstown will take on Warren Hills Regional at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Lenape Valley, they will head out to challenge Wallkill Valley at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. The Rangers’ defense has only allowed nine points per game this season, so the Patriots’ offense will have their work cut out for them.
