Household Hazardous Waste Day Still Going Strong in 25th Year

Household Hazardous Waste Day Still Going Strong in 25th Year

OTSEGO COUNTY—The Otsego County Planning and Solid Waste Department held its 25th Hazardous Waste Collection event Friday and Saturday, August 16 and 17.

On Friday morning, a satellite event was held in Unadilla at the Town Highway garage. Approximately 129 cars dropped off hazardous materials, officials reported.

The main event was held on Saturday at the Meadows Office Complex in the Town of Middlefield, with approximately 326 cars dropping off hazardous materials. A combined total of approximately 455 households took advantage of this free disposal program.

Hazardous wastes commonly found from around the home were collected throughout the day, including liquid and solid wastes such as pesticides, lubricants, paint, cleaning chemicals and solvents, flammable liquids, corrosive materials, and solid pesticide materials. The materials were received and packaged by MXI Environmental Services, the contracted vendor for the collection event.

This was the 13th year pharmaceuticals and medications were collected. According to a press release, Officer Timmy Card and Officer Mark Vencak from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation supervised the collection prior to the County Sheriff’s department transporting 860 pounds to Oswego County for incineration.

Other items were collected for local processing, including approximately 1,900 pounds of automotive batteries and 2,000 pounds of household batteries.

The success of the collection event can be credited to the assistance of the Otsego County Conservation Association, which helps to organize volunteers, the Town of Unadilla, the Otsego County Highway Department, Otsego County Building Services, Otsego County Emergency Services, the Otsego County Sheriff’s Office, NYSDEC, and the efficiency of the crew from MXI Environmental Services.

Hazardous Waste Collection Day is an annual public service provided by the Otsego County Board of Representatives. NYSDEC provides approximately half the funds to cover the costs of…

Luzerne County DA identifies body found in Nanticoke

NANTICOKE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — After a body was discovered in a Luzerne County neighborhood, 28/22 News now knows the victim’s identity.

28/22 News first reported word of the investigation Tuesday morning.

The Luzerne County District Attorney’s Office has identified the body found in Nanticoke as 36-year-old Kelci Pamela Jones from Nanticoke.

Her body was found in the yard of the home at 213 East Ridge Street, but she did not live in this neighborhood.

People who live there are shocked by it all.

“Well, I had a neighbor call me and let me know. I saw fire trucks out back and said ‘What! Let me see what’s going on.’ As I walked to the door, they say they found a body. A body that’s horrible. That’s horrible,” said Paulette, a neighbor.

State, local, and county detectives converged on the 200 block of East Ridge Street Tuesday morning.

Arrest made after Plains Twp. hit-and-run

The body of the 36-year-old woman was found in the front yard of a home at 213 East Ridge Street.

They spent some four hours gathering potential evidence. They also seized an SUV. It was hauled away on a flatbed truck.

“Obviously we’re treating this as a suspicious death as we always do until we have evidence otherwise there are a number of witnesses who have been cooperative so far we’re hoping to have more information later today,” said Luzerne County District Attorney Sam Sanguedolce.

An autopsy was done today. The district attorney says the county coroner will be releasing a statement on Wednesday.

At this point, 28/22 News does not yet know the cause and manner of death.

Connecticut Sun lose 78-76 heartbreaker to Minnesota Lynx as ex-UConn star Napheesa Collier scores 25

UNCASVILLE — Despite a thrilling fourth-quarter comeback attempt, the Connecticut Sun came up just short against the Minnesota Lynx, suffering a 78-76 loss at Mohegan Sun Arena on Tuesday.

The loss put the Sun out of contention for the No. 2 seed in the WNBA Playoffs, and they need to win their final regular-season game against the Chicago Sky on Thursday to hold on to their No. 3 position. The postseason begins Sunday, and Connecticut will host the No. 6 Indiana Fever in the first round if current seeding holds.

Superstar Alyssa Thomas played every minute of the first three quarters against Minnesota, getting her first rest to start the fourth. She checked back in after three minutes and finished with 18 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds, powering the Sun’s late comeback.

“For the other team, having played against her so many times, she’s really aggressive and really intimidating defensively,” said Sun guard Marina Mabrey, who was traded from the Chicago Sky midseason. “You can say you’re not worried about it, but you are. So she gave us that spark, gave us that energy and just that will to win factor. When she does that, everybody kind of jumps on board and tries to everything you can to match that energy.”

Connecticut had four players finish with double-digit points, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Lynx’s weapons. Minnesota was led by former UConn star Napheesa Collier with 25 points, six rebounds and five assists plus a game-high four blocks and two steals.

Napheesa Collier’s stellar play has led the Minnesota Lynx to the top of the WNBA

The Sun fell behind almost immediately in the first quarter as Bridget Carleton opened the game on a 3-pointer for Minnesota, and Collier hit back-to-back-to-back jump…

The Ohio Country Episode 11: Pretendians

Ohio is home to relatively few citizens of federally recognized tribes, especially citizens from the nations removed from the state in the 19th century, like the Shawnee, Miami, and Wyandotte.

That absence has led to dozens of so-called “remnant tribes” popping up in the state whose members claim to have American Indian ancestry.

Some Indigenous people and academics have called the people in these unrecognized groups “pretendians.” While to some it may seem innocuous, pretendians in Ohio have, based on their unverified or non-existent identity, made money, accessed ancestral funerary objects and remains, and spread false and harmful information about American Indian people.
