45TH ANNUAL NANTICOKE INDIAN POWWOW

Traditional Native American music, dances, art, crafts, jewelry, and more will bring people together to celebrate and learn about the culture. The 45th annual Nanticoke Indian Powwow will be at Hudson Fields in Milton on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tickets cost 10 dollars for adults and 5 dollars for children 11 to 17. BOARDWALK ARTS FESTIVAL

The Bethany Beach Boardwalk Arts Festival is also in its 45th year. Chester County Prison escapee Danelo Cavalcante spotted on camera early Saturday [update] [home camera video]

POCOPSON — Authorities on Saturday said convicted murderer Danelo Sousa Cavalcante had been spotted less than 2 miles from the Chester County Prison from where he had escaped about 40 hours earlier.

During a press conference Saturday afternoon, Chester County District Attorney Deb Ryan confirmed that Cavalcante had been sighted.

“One resident indicated they observed a small male fitting the description of our suspect with a backpack on in the area,” Ryan said. “There is evidence to suggest that he’s still in the local (residential area). We just now believe he has not gotten more than 1 to 2 miles away from the prison. Law enforcement is still actively canvassing the area.”

In a press release issued Saturday, the Chester County District Attorney’s Office said Cavalcante, 34, of Montgomery County was seen on a residential surveillance camera about 12:30 a.m. Saturday in the 1800 block of Lenape Road, about 1½ miles from the prison.

Officials said they believe Cavalcante is hiding in a heavily wooded residential area.

Robert Carr Jr. of the U.S. Marshals Service added that they believe the fugitive is in a residential area of about 271 homes. He added that since the sighting of Cavalcante, additional investigators have been brought in to assist in the search.

“There’s well over 100 investigators out there from the state police, U.S. Marshals, local, state and county assets as well,” Carr said. “So our presence in the area has only gone up since this positive sighting (Friday) night.”

Cavalcante was wearing pants, a light-colored T-shirt and white sneakers, the same clothing he was last seen in after he escaped from the prison early Thursday. He has long, black curly hair and was wearing a backpack, although it was unclear where he may have acquired the backpack.

Michener Museum tells Lenape history from contemporary Lenape artists

For the exhibition “Never Broken: Visualizing Lenape Histories,” now on view at the Michener Museum in Doylestown, Pa., Ahchipaptunhe created large-scale, monochrome abstract pieces based on the patterns of Lenape pottery fragments and woven baskets seen in the same gallery. Some of them date to the third century,

Borrowed from the New Jersey State Museum, the objects under glass have patterns that are echoed in Ahchipaptunhe’s paintings. The pottery was carved with hash marks; the baskets have a checkerboard weave stamped with graphics. The Lenape artisans likely used carved potatoes dipped in ink to stamp their baskets. Police Urge Vigilance As Search For Escaped PA Murderer Continues

CHESTER COUNTY — Authorities urged Chester County residents to remain vigilant as the search continued Saturday for convicted killer Danelo Cavalcante, who broke out of prison Thursday and was last spotted early Saturday morning.

At a 3 p.m. news conference, Chester County, state and federal authorities said they believed Cavalcante was still located within a mile or two of the prison where he escaped. Authorities said they were focusing their search efforts on a heavily wooded area near Route 52.

Authorities said more than 270 homes were located in the vicinity of the search area.

“We are requesting that residents in the area remain inside,” Chester County District Attorney Deborah Ryan said Saturday. “Lock your doors, lock your cars. There is evidence to suggest he’s still in the area.”

A home surveillance camera caught a glimpse of 34-year-old Cavalcante shortly before 1:45 a.m. Saturday morning in the 1800 block of Lenape Road, approximately 1.5 miles from the Chester County Prison, officials said.

He was wearing pants, a light-colored t-shirt, and white sneakers. His appearance has remained unchanged since his escape Thursday morning, officials said Saturday.

Cavalcante has long, black curly hair and is wearing a backpack. Authorities on Saturday said they did not know where he obtained the backpack.

Cavalcante was convicted on Aug. 16 of first-degree murder in the April 18, 2021 stabbing of Deborah Brandao in front of her children, ages 4 and 7, outside her home in the 300 block of Pawlings Road, Schuylkill Township.

He was sentenced on Aug. 22 in the Chester County Justice Center to life in prison after a jury deliberated for 15 minutes. On Thursday, he was awaiting transfer to state prison to serve out his sentence when he escaped.

Firefighters cycle across the state to honor fallen 9/11 heroes

A total of 343 firefighters died in the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001 and 341 more firefighters have died since from their illnesses acquired while working at Ground Zero – on Saturday, FDNY firefighters cycled across Connecticut in remembrance of their sacrifice.

The Milford Fire Department served as a rest stop for dozens of firefighters cycling across Connecticut in the 13th annual FDNY 343 Ride. The tour began out of Sherwood Island State Park and ended at Mohegan Sun – 95 miles in all.

“When Ride 343 reached out, there were no questions asked,” Milford Fire Battalion Chief Adam Hansen said. “The only question was, ‘What else can we do?’”

“A quick break, we fill up our water bottles and keep going,” Greg Gatto, of Long Island, said.

“It’s a long ride,” Massapequa’s Vince Miller said. “During, you don’t even think about it. You just keep riding, and you think about everybody else and the pain they felt running up the stairs and the towers and everything else that went along with it.”

The next stop was in East Haven, where Building Homes for Heroes unveiled a new, mortgage-free home for retired Army Specialist Evan Marcy.

“He joined the service right after the attacks on 9/11,” said Larry Mack, a retired Engine 50, Ladder 19 fireman. “The kid lost his leg [in Afghanistan], so we’ve teamed up with Building Homes for Heroes and it’s their 343rd house, so it’s fitting that one of our own blood gets this house on this anniversary.”

“It’s actually brought our ride full circle,” Gatto said.

Doylestown Museum Showcases New Exhibit of Native American Art, Artifacts

The art museum in Doylestown is showing the artwork of the Native Americans who once lived in the area.

An art museum in Doylestown is telling the story of the area’s Native American inhabitants through an immersive gallery.

The Michener Art Museum, located at 138 S Pine Street, began its latest art exhibit on Sept. 9. “Never Broken: Visualizing Lenape Histories” delves into the long history of the Lenni Lenape, a Native American tribe that was once the main inhabitants of what is now Bucks County.

The exhibition features recent and newly commissioned work by Ahchipaptunhe (Delaware Tribe of Indians and Cherokee), Joe Baker (Delaware Tribe of Indians), Holly Wilson (Delaware Nation and Cherokee), and Nathan Young (Delaware Tribe of Indians, Pawnee, and Kiowa). The works, new and old, tell the story of the original inhabitants of the area.

“Through a focus on Lenape art and culture and a critical examination of historical visualizations of Native and European–American relationships, Never Broken demonstrates the ways in which art can create, challenge, and rewrite history.”

The exhibit will run until Jan. 14 of next year.
