Lake George Churches to walk The Way of the Cross; hold Easter Sunrise Service

Lake George Churches will continue their annual tradition of Walking the Way of the Cross along the Village streets on Good Friday and celebrating Easter with a sunrise service on the lake shore.

The Walking of the Way of the Cross will begin at noon on Friday, March 29. The observance will start at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Mohican Street and travel to St. James Episcopal Church on Montcalm Street. The procession will continue to Lake George Community Methodist Church and end at Caldwell Presbyterian Church, both also on Montcalm Street.

Retracing Jesus’ final footsteps is a Christian tradition that dates back to the 4th Century when pilgrims would travel to the Holy Land to walk the original Way of the Cross. The path is marked with 14 stations beginning with Pontius Pilate’s Court condemning Jesus to death and ending with Jesus being laid in his tomb. During the season of Lent, Christians worldwide celebrate the Stations of the Cross each Friday.

The sun rises over Lake George.

On Easter Sunday, the four Lake George Churches will celebrate the Resurrection with an ecumenical Easter Sunrise Service on MacDonald Pier in Shepard Park. The service will begin at 6:30 a.m. A free continental breakfast at Caldwell Presbyterian Church will follow the Easter Sunrise Service.

Atlantic City girls crew team looking to build on last year’s success

The Atlantic City High School girls crew team took home its share of first-place trophies last year.

Many of the rowers who made that happen are back this spring.

Atlantic City won the girls team title at the Atlantic County High School Rowing Championships last May on Lake Lenape in Mays Landing. The Vikings’ girls won the varsity four, junior eight and varsity quad championships at the regatta. A.C. finished the season ranked No. 2 in The Press Elite 11, behind only Holy Spirit.

Despite losing six key rowers to graduation, Atlantic City has a lot back and should be a strong contender in various divisions again this year.

“In my 15 years of coaching, the group we have right now is one of the most dedicated,” Vikings coach Sean Duffey said. “They love the sport, and that’s huge. They love being there every day, and they don’t complain. They’re a good group of athletes, and they’re good leaders toward the younger rowers, which is great.”

The Vikings will begin the season April 6 at the Lake Lenape Sprints II in Mays Landing. The A.C. girls also compete the following day at the Manny Flick-Horvat Series regatta on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.

“We’ll start out with a first eight, a second eight and a varsity four for the first couple races and see how things go,” Duffey said. “We’ll go from there.”

Atlantic City’s varsity-eight lineup includes stroke Lexi Gormley, Lauren Fox, Anna Tran, Kaitlyn Do, Zuzanna Turska, Gabriela Tayoun, Maggie Morgan and bow Mardiha Ahmed. The varsity four consists of stroke Elon Lomax, Ellie Carrasco, Sophia Mammucari and bow Gabby Pagliaro. The Vikings have two good coxswains in Tasnova Tayeba and Isabella Gravely. Ten of those rowers and both coxswains were Press All-Stars last spring.

$2 Million Investment Aimed at Supporting Eco-Friendly Poultry Farming on Delmarva

DELMARVA – The Delmarva Chicken Association (DCA) has teamed with the Nanticoke Watershed Alliance and the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay to invest $2 million in cost-share programs to encourage farmers to adopt chicken farming best management practices.

According to the Delmarva Chicken Association, the investment aims to improve vegetation buffers along streams, precision nutrient management, litter management, and conservation drainage in across Chesapeake Bay watersheds.

Backed by a $997,327 grant from the National Fish & Wildlife Foundation and $1 million in matching funds from the Delmarva Chicken Association, the State of Maryland, the Environmental Protection Agency, and other groups, the effort is hoped to bring increased conservation measures to Delmarva farms and improve the waters of the Chesapeake.

“Since the 1980s, farmers have increased food production to meet growing demand while meaningfully reducing agriculture’s yearly nitrogen and phosphorus contributions to the Bay, contributing to its improved health today,” said Holly Porter, DCA’s executive director. “Innovative, collaborative efforts like this one between the chicken community, environmental groups, and funding partners provide an opportunity to realize even more agricultural nutrient reductions, benefiting everyone in the watershed.”

DCA says participating farmers can be eligible for up to 100% cost-share for installed practices, which include:

-Trees around the perimeter of farms to provide a visual buffer from neighbors and roads, reduce noise, dust and odor, absorb soil nutrients, and provide shade.

-Large warm-season grasses near tunnel fans that can act like an outdoor air filter, capturing dust and feathers and absorbing ammonia.

-Pollinator plots that can be planted in the swales between houses, around retention ponds, or in open areas that normally are mowed, reducing flooding and capturing soil nutrients in their roots.

“The partnership that has been forged between Nanticoke Watershed Alliance (NWA) and Delmarva Chicken Association is a testimony to each organization’s commitment to preserving the environment while supporting…

Danville inches closer to connector trail between Kokosing Gap and Mohican Valley trails

MOUNT VERNON — Local officials are working to make a connector trail between the Kokosing Gap and Mohican Valley trails a reality.

Representatives of Danville, the Knox County Park District, the Knox Community Foundation, the Area Development Foundation, and the Kokosing Gap Trail Board met with the county commissioners on March 14 to review preliminary plans.

The KGT ends at Richards Street in Danville, and the MVT begins at East Street. Connecting the two is one initiative in the village’s strategic plan.

“Typically, trails would follow the railroad bed, but Danville Feed and Supply has a building on the railroad bed,” explained Sam Filkins, ADF vice president.

“We looked at using an existing bridge on the state route, but it wasn’t wide enough to do a bike trail, and we would have to build a new bridge. That would cost too much.”

Lisa Loyd of the KCF added, “We think the easiest way is to build a bridge over the creek behind the feed mill in Danville.”

Plans call for cyclists to come off of the KGT, head north on Richards Street to Tilton Street, and then east to South Market Street.

Cyclists will cross South Market onto village-owned land, skirt the perimeter of what will become Thomas Wayne Cottrell Jr. Memorial Park, cross the new bridge, and access the Mohican Valley Trail.

The connector trail will be a raised boardwalk over the wetlands areas.

The crosswalk on South Market will include warning lights and roadway striping.

Connector trail brings commerce

Filkins said Danville is one of the few villages that import workers. More than 32 percent of them are in retail and food services.

“They would benefit from tourism and commerce,” he said. “The reality is we’re not able to build a large industrial place in Danville,…
