College student Marian Bangurah is scared for her niece and nephew.
Her parents came from West Africa to Monroe County for its natural beauty. She said it reminded them of home. But she fears environmental degradation will steal that beauty from her niece and nephew. The forests in her family’s backyard in Tunkhannock Township are being clear cut for warehouses and truck terminals.
“And now that sanctity of this area is under threat. Our quality of life is under threat,” Bangurah said. “And the fact that we have to fight to preserve clean water, [private] wells and even the possible quality of our food is a ridiculous reality that we are now subjected to.”
Developer David Moyer is deforesting 100 acres in Blakeslee to build two warehouses, a truck stop, restaurants, stores and a pharmacy. The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) held its second public hearing on June 20 to determine whether to issue Moyer a stormwater permit for the project. Without that permit, Moyer cannot start construction.

Environmentalists and local officials teamed up to fight the Moyer project at the DEP hearing on June 20. Lynn Kelly, Beth Hurley and Brigitte Meyer have spoken at several hearings and meetings about overdevelopment throughout the Poconos. A dancer at a past Nanticoke Powwow dances in the dance circle.
Coastal Point • Shaun M. Lambert
Nanticoke Indian Chief Avery Johnson said he is looking forward to the tribe’s 46th annual Powwow in September — two days of traditional foods, native dancing, vendors and camaraderie.
“It’s always fun, right? It’s all about bringing the public up to speed about Nanticoke Indians. We are having a special guest this year, Angela Miracle Gladue from Canada. She’s one of the top female hoop dancers and performers in the country,” he said, describing her style as “indigenous hip-hop.”
Gladue, who has performed at the Kennedy Center and at the Pentagon, is a Cree who, Johnson said, “has a way of putting it all together and creating her own kind of dancing.”
The Cree are a North American indigenous people who live primarily in Canada.
The powwow — designed to “celebrate, educate, share, entertain and excite the public about the continent’s first peoples” — will be on Saturday, Sept. 7, and Sunday, Sept. 8, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. Grand Entry will be at noon each day, and the powwow will feature traditional and fancy dances, as well as dance specials with prize money. On Sunday, there will be a morning spiritual service at 8:30 a.m.
“I hope every year brings something a little different and a little more interesting to the public,” Johson said, adding that local dignitaries have been invited to the powwow, including U.S. Sen. Tom Carper — a regular at the event who often takes part in the dances and who will retire next year.
Keith Colston will be emcee and explain the traditions.
Red Blanket & Stoney Creek will drum, and the head dancers will be Chief Keith…

The Cleveland suburb boasts one of the most beautiful downtowns in Cuyahoga County. Strolling through the Chagrin Falls Triangle Park Commercial Historic District is a surreal experience. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the neighborhood stands out for the beautiful cascades, which serve as the perfect focal point. Exquisite nature spaces complement the town’s quaint downtown, providing an escape for tourists who appreciate the company of Mother Nature. You can relax at Beartown Lakes Reservation, which features quiet trails along Spring Creek.
Chagrin Falls harbors a respectable arts community well-represented by the Chagrin Valley Little Theater. This institution has entertained the public for decades by staging concerts, musicals, plays, and other theatrical performances. It is also one of the country’s oldest community theaters.

After Governor Ned Lamont signed the bill into law in May 2021, sports betting officially became legal in Connecticut. The Mashantucket Pequots and Mohegans operate Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun, respectively, and have long been a dominant force in both state politics and casino gaming. Both are now able to offer online sports betting in Connecticut, along with the CT Lottery. Online betting officially began in October 2021.
While the long road to legalized sports betting in Connecticut has come to an end, there is still a lot to unpack. Read on for more information about the state’s legislation, the two tribes’ exclusivity agreement, why Sportech is not happy with any of this, what it means for bettors, and which operators are now live in the Nutmeg State.
Update: Fanatics Sportsbook has replaced SugarHouse and is now available in Connecticut. This is great news for bettors in the state because Fanatics is one of the best new sportsbooks available today.
Connecticut has two primary, federally recognized tribes that basically control casino gaming in the state. You’ve probably heard of Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun; Foxwoods was at one point the largest casino in the country. It is now #2, followed by Mohegan Sun at #3 based on square feet of gaming space. Yes, they are both larger than every casino in Las Vegas. In case you’re interested, the largest casino in America is the Winstar Casino in Oklahoma, of all places.
Because of their influence in the state, the Mashantucket Pequots and Mohegans were always going to be given access to the sports betting market. Because of the tribal involvement in the state’s gaming market, everything had to go through the US Department of…

SALISBURY — Dr. Noah Bressman, Salisbury University assistant professor of biological studies, is combating invasive species in local waterways, and Eastern Shore anglers can help.
Fishing hobbyists and professionals alike are invited to the third Nanticoke River Invasive Fishing Derby, presented by SU Saturday, July 20 (rain date: Saturday, July 27) at Cherry Beach Park in Sharptown, MD. Lines in at 5 a.m. and weigh-in begins at 1:30 p.m., followed by awards, data collection, invasive species educational lessons and more.
Thanks to support from SU’s Graduate Studies and Research Office, the free derby features some $2,000 in prizes. A portion of all blue catfish and northern snakeheads caught will be provided to Bressman’s lab to continue research to learn more about their effects on the local ecosystem, with a focus on diet, growth speed and reproduction rates. Anglers may take home the remainder of their catches if desired.
“We really want to spread awareness in local waterway communities about what fish are invasive, and how they can minimize the population to relieve some pressure from striped bass and blue crabs, whose populations are on the decline,” said Bressman. “The event is family friendly for anglers of any age.”
Derby fishing is permitted at Cherry Beach Park for shore-based anglers. Those fishing from kayaks or boats may use any boat launch along the Nanticoke and tributaries such as Marshyhope Creek and Barren Creek. Maryland or Delaware tidal fishing licenses are required for most participants, respective to their fishing location. A section of Cherry Beach Park is designated as a license-free fishing zone for those without a license.
The event is hook and line only and does not include a bow fishing category. Limited fishing gear will be available for those who may not have their own supplies.
Though invasive…
Summer has officially arrived in the Northern Hemisphere, and to kick off its annual inauguration, a “Strawberry Moon” will grace the skies of the southeast on Friday, June 21.
The first moon of summer is a little deceptive at first, as many would expect it to shine a bright red or pink hue due to its namesake, much like the blood moons that draw so much attention.
This is not the case, however, as the Strawberry Moon got its name from American Indian tribes such as the Algonquian who used this moon to determine “the ripening of ‘June-bearing’ strawberries that are ready to be gathered,” according to the Famers Almanac, not a drastic change of color.

“Since the 2024 June full moon happens on the solstice, the very day the sun is absolutely at its highest of the year, this month’s full moon on the 21st is the very lowest full moon, indeed, the lowest we’ve seen in years,” the Almanac reads. “Just look at it! Because the moon is so low, it will appear bigger than ever. This is called the ‘moon illusion.’”
But the Algonquian tribe were not alone in this practice, as other tribes such as the Ojibwe, Dakota and Lakota also marked this moon as a time of harvest.
Events such as this, and the peoples of the earth using as a time of harvest, coincide with the words of the Bible in regard to the seasons changing as time continues.
Here are two verses that show God is the Lord of the harvest and set forth the sun and moon to mark the times of…
