BAGHDAD: Iraq has asked that the UN assistance mission set up after the US-led invasion of the country in 2003 end its operations by the end of 2025, saying it is no longer needed because Iraq has made significant progress towards stability.

Based in Baghdad’s heavily fortified Green Zone, the mission was established with a broad mandate to assist in the development of Iraqi institutions, support political dialogue and elections, and promote human rights.

Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani said Iraq wants to deepen cooperation with other UN organizations, but the political work of the UN assistance mission, known as UNAMI, is no longer needed.

The head of the mission in Iraq frequently shuttles between top political, judicial and security officials in a job that supporters see as important to conflict prevention and resolution but critics have often described as meddling.

Sudani in a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that the country has managed to take important steps in many areas, especially those under the mandate of UNAMI.

The Iraqi government has decided to end several international missions from 2023, including the US-led coalition formed in 2014 to fight Islamic State and the UN mission set up to help hold the jihadist group accountable for its crimes.

Iraqi officials say the country has come a long way since the sectarian bloodshed following the US-led invasion and Islamic State’s attempt to establish a caliphate, and that it no longer needs as much international help.

Some critics worry about the stability of the young democracy given the recurring conflicts and the presence of many heavily armed military-political groups that have often fought in the streets, most recently in 2022.

Since First Dates first hit our screens we’ve all been in love with the show; watching burgeoning romances, sparks fly, confidence built and hearing about people’s lives. But if there’s one individual that has really stolen our hearts over the show’s many seasons, it’s Maitre D the charming Fred Sirieix. Well, and Melvin the barman, but it’s not Melvin that shaved his head into a mohican this weekend!

Yep, that’s right, everybody’s favourite Frenchman has shaved his hair into a punky mohican in lockdown. He shared a snap showing off the new look to his Instagram on Sunday (31 January).

The tv star told fans and followers he’d always fancied trying out the hairstyle in the caption, writing: “Bonjour I always wanted to do it ️ “

And what better time is there to experiment than lockdown? When hiding in the house for months till it grows out is actually compulsory?

Fred then asked his followers for their opinion on his look, and whether he should keep it.

Though it seems he knows what the option will be from a couple of important people, finishing the caption: “PS don’t tell my agent (or my Mum)

United States Attorney Clint Johnson today announced the results of the May Federal Grand Jury 2024-A Indictments.

The following individuals have been charged with violations of United States law in indictments returned by the Grand Jury. The return of an indictment is a method of informing a defendant of alleged violations of federal law, which must be proven in a court of law beyond a reasonable doubt to overcome a defendant’s presumption of innocence.

Filiberto Almaguer-Estrada. Felon in Possession of a Firearm; Possession of Methamphetamine with Intent to Distribute. Almaguer-Estrada, 30, of Tulsa, is charged with possessing a firearm and ammunition knowing he was previously convicted of felonies. He is further charged with knowingly possessing methamphetamine with intent to distribute. The Drug Enforcement Administration and Tulsa Police Department are the investigative agencies. Assistant U.S. Attorney Attila Bogdan is prosecuting the case. 24-CR-149

Eduardo Agustin Barrera-Lopez; Marco Antonio Lopez-Damian; Dennis Manuel Salazar-Lopez. Drug Conspiracy; Possession of Methamphetamine with Intent to Distribute; Possession of Heroin with Intent to Distribute. Barrera-Lopez, 38, Lopez-Damian,26, Salazar-Lopez, 22, all Mexican nationals, are charged with conspiring to distribute methamphetamine and heroin starting in Oct. 2023. They are further charged with intentionally possessing methamphetamine and heroin with intent to distribute. The Drug Enforcement Administration and Tulsa Police Department are the investigative agencies. Assistant U.S. Attorney Attila Bogdan is prosecuting the case. 24-CR-148

Jun. 18—MOHEGAN — Ask DeWanna Bonner how she’s doing on any given day and the Connecticut Sun veteran will most likely answer, “I’m old.”

On a Friday night in which a sizable percentage of the 7,088 fans came to Mohegan Sun Arena to see the Seattle Storm’s Breanna Stewart and most especially old favorite Sue Bird, it was Bonner who shined when it counted.

Bonner scored 15 of her game-high 20 in the fourth and added 10 rebounds, four assists and three steals to lead the Sun to an 82-71 win.

Connecticut (12-4) clinched the season series against the Storm (9-6). It won at Seattle on June 5, 93-86.

Bonner missed 10 of 12 shots through three quarters. She made six of her seven field goals in the fourth, including two threes.

“My teammates, man, they just kept telling me to keep shooting, it’s going to fall, it’s going to fall at the right time,” Bonner said. “That’s what (happened). Once I got one going, I felt a little bit better. They just told me to keep staying aggressive because I think I passed up a couple of shots (earlier).”

Jonquel Jones had 17 points, 13 rebounds and four assists for the Sun and Brionna Jones added 19 points. Alyssa Thomas added 10 points, eight assists and five rebounds.

Connecticut shot 52.2-percent.

Stewart led Seattle with 19 points, seven rebounds and five assists and Bird scored 14 with four assists.

“The fourth quarter, we struggled,” Stewart said. “In order to steal a game on the road, you have to play better in all (four) quarters.”

Connecticut had gone cold in the third quarter (it shot 35.3-percent from the floor) and needed someone to get rolling. That someone was Bonner.
