COLUMBUS — The Arts in the Parks summer workshop series brings state park visitors together with seven Ohio teaching artists to create engaging experiences. Workshops will offer an array of activities including creating art from recyclables, writing poetry and even decorating Ukrainian eggs. Participating locations include Burr Oak, Deer Creek, Mohican, Salt Fork and Shawnee State Park lodges.

The artists featured in this year’s Arts in the Parks artist workshop series include the following:

27 July 2023- A Greencastle man allegedly now known as Kwame Asher Bey is looking at charges of fleeing officers and fleeing an officer. Byron Anthony Staple is charged with misdemeanor resisting arrest, misdemeanor false identification to a law enforcement officer, misdemeanor fleeing an officer, traffic violations of driving without an inspection, violating camping rules, and summary marijuana possession. Staple is behind bars in Franklin County Jail on a bail of $2,000.

Around 6pm on July 24th, DCNR Rangers were on patrol in the Buchanan State Forest, Todd Township, Fulton County when they allegedly spotted a Honda Pilot parked in a campsite that didn’t have an inspection sticker. After waiting about five minutes to see if the driver was just stopped momentarily, the Ranger approached the sole occupant, now known to be Byron Staple. Staple allegedly explained to officers that his name was “Kwame Asher Bey” and he was a consulate for the “Unami Buffalo Nation”. Staple also allegedly said he was a sovereign citizen.

The Unami Buffalo Nation in Pennsylvania describe themselves online as “the perennial Moors/Muurs, descendants of the Moroccan Empire.” Additionally, they “establish this law of restoration, reinstitution, and reaffirmation of the Moroccan Empire”.

Rangers ran the name Kwame Asher Bey through their system, which yielded no results. They, however, ran plates on the car and found them to be registered to Byron Staple. When Rangers approached Staple with this…

Those in attendance at a Corry Area School District Building Committee meeting Wednesday heard an update of the school’s renovation project on the middle-high school.

Mike Munsee, director of buildings and grounds, said the crews are making good progress with the renovation.

“For the most part, everything is pretty much on track,” he said.

The renovation, which was approved by the school board in July of 2022, is over $20 million and is set to be completed in June of 2024.

Contracting work for the project includes general, electrical, plumbing and HVAC. Many of the moving parts worked on up until now are nearing completion, including: replacing the HVAC system, which is 95% complete; electrical lighting replacements, 90% complete; plumbing work and a new water line installed from the city’s main waterline, 90% complete.

He said they’re making good progress on the roof as well, and have even begun some work that was slated for next summer. The nice weather in the summer and the lack of students makes the summer break an optimal work time.

Right now, crews are focused on the main office area in addition to the roof. Munsee said the mailboxes for faculty members are set to come in a little later than anticipated, pushing the project back, but they are working on mudding dry wall and getting ready to paint and move new furniture into that area.

Other work includes replacing windows and patching old vents, along with renovating the bathrooms across from the cafeteria.

Joe Frisina, school board president, asked what areas of the school will have air conditioning for the upcoming school year.

Bill West, director of secondary education, explained that many classrooms and back into the career and technical center will have air conditioning, but the larger areas will wait until next summer.

Continued from previous.

Day 2 of my ride across Ohio will be from Millersburg to my home in northeast Columbus.

I like to get an early start on these long rides because one never knows what can crop up along the way. I grab a quick breakfast at the hotel and head out.

The Holmes County Trail takes me 5 miles to Killbuck, where I have to ride country roads to Glenmont to pick up the Mohican Valley Trail.

You share the Holmes County Trail with Amish buggies. Watch out for horse by-product.

I can’t say much about Killbuck except there’s not a whole lot there and the place looks like it has seen better days.

I have no trouble on the roads. I see maybe five cars between Killbuck and Glenmont. I have a radar taillight plus a helmet mounted mirror so I have no problem “checking six”.

The cars give me a wide berth. I have fortunately never had someone actively take a swipe at me although a couple have come too close for comfort over the years. If I see a line of cars getting backed up behind me I try to pull off and let them pass. No sense pissing people off. Enough folks hate cyclists as it is.

Out on the road. Fortunately not many cars this time of morning.

The Mohican Valley Trail features a 3 mile climb at maybe 2% grade followed by the same on the descent. The nice thing about rail trails is the climbs tend to be long and shallow because that’s what a train needed.

NANTICOKE — A 16-year-old boy from Wyoming Borough was charged as an adult in the attempted homicide of a 14-year-old boy in Nanticoke on Friday.

John Carl Pearce IV, of Wyoming Avenue, is accused of leaning out a passenger side window of a stolen Hyundai Elantra and fired multiple rounds in the area of West Green and Maple streets at about 7:15 p.m., according to court records.

A 14-year-old boy who was walking from a park where he played basketball was struck in the head and ankle and was transported to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Nanticoke City Police said.

Pearce was identified as the alleged gunman after investigators with the Pennsylvania State Police at Wilkes-Barre obtained video footage from locations in Nanticoke, Shickshinny and Larksville.

After the shooting, the Hyundai Elantra was set ablaze in the area of Eno and Church streets in Plymouth, court records say.

State police charged Pearce with two counts of aggravated assault and one count each of criminal attempt to commit criminal homicide, possession of a firearm by a minor, criminal conspiracy to commit arson, criminal conspiracy to commit reckless burning, criminal conspiracy to commit theft, criminal conspiracy to commit criminal mischief and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.

Pearce was arraigned before Luzerne County President Judge Michael T. Vough early Wednesday morning and jailed without bail as he was deemed a flight risk and a danger to the community.

According to the criminal complaint:

A woman from Nanticoke reported her silver Hyundai Elantra was stolen from her East Union Street residence on July 19.

PLAINS TWP. — The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board on Wednesday approved three consent agreements presented by the Board’s Office of Enforcement Counsel during its public meeting regarding violations that occurred at casinos.

Total fines levied were $67,500.

The approved consent agreements were the result of negotiations between OEC and:

• Downs Racing, L.P., operator of Mohegan Pennsylvania, a $50,000 fine for allowing individuals under the age of 21 to gain access to the gaming floor. In the first incident, the individual gained access multiple times to gamble. In the other incident, the individual gained access and was provided alcohol.

• Holdings Acquisition, L.P., operator of Rivers Casino Pittsburgh, a $10,000 fine for allowing an individual under the age of 21 to gain access to the gaming floor and gamble.

• Sugarhouse HSP Gaming, L.P., operator of Rivers Casino Philadelphia, a $7,500 fine for allowing an untrained employee to deal roulette.

Copies of the approved consent agreements offering more details on these matters are available upon request through the Board’s Office of Communications.

The Board also acted on petitions filed by OEC to ban seven adults from all casinos in the Commonwealth for leaving a total of nine minors unattended in order to engage in gaming activities:

• A male and female were placed on the Involuntary Exclusion List after leaving a 9-year-old child unattended in a hotel room numerous times at Mt. Airy Casino Resort for a total of 7 hours 48 minutes over a 2-½ day period in order to gamble.

• A male patron was placed on the Involuntary Exclusion List after leaving a 5-year-old child unattended in a vehicle in the parking garage of Rivers Casino Philadelphia for 35 minutes while he gambled in the sportsbook.
