Police are seen at West Green and Maple streets in Nanticoke on Friday evening investigating a drive-by shooting that left a teenager seriously injured.

NANTICOKE — The victim in Friday night’s drive-by shooting was transported to Geisinger Danville, where his condition had been stabilizing early Saturday, city Police Chief Mike Roke said.

The 14-year-old male was struck twice — once in the back of the head and once in the ankle — the chief added. Further updates on the teen’s condition were not immediately available Saturday afternoon.

The incident took place prior to 7:30 p.m. Friday in the area of West Green and Maple streets, where a car with gunshot damage could be seen as investigators went about their work.

Witnesses watching a baseball game at a pub across the street said they heard multiple gunshots and ran outside and saw the boy laying in the street.

Roke on Saturday said he couldn’t comment further on the status of the investigation, which had been turned over to Pennsylvania State Police.

The chief did say on Friday night that he believed the incident was isolated and targeted.

Efforts to reach a PSP spokesperson were not immediately successful on Saturday afternoon.

The new standards approved by the Florida Board of Education on race should be taught in the state’s public schools has received criticism from educators and civil rights groups, including the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI).

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’s “anti-woke” rhetoric is being blamed for the new standards approved on Wednesday by the state board of education.. Under DeSantis, the Florida legislature passed legislation that bars instruction in public schools that suggests anyone is privileged or oppressed based on their race or skin color.

One standard approved on Wednesday includes “how slaves developed skills which, in some instances, could be applied for their personal benefit” has been criticized across the country.

On Friday, the NCAI released a statement, authored by the organization’s treasurer Shannon Hosley (president of the Stockbridge- Munsee Band of Mohican Indians), that rebuked the new standards. The statement reads:

“Native people are far too familiar with the devastating consequences caused by education systems that have at various times ignored, fabricated, and misrepresented the often painful histories of our people. And as the state of Florida threatens to dangerously alter the history of enslaved people and teach it to generations of future leaders, the National Congress of American Indians stands united with our diverse partners, both Native and non-Native, in shaping a promising future. We firmly believe that it is our responsibility to preserve our unique histories and not allow outsiders to rewrite them on our behalf. Together, we will champion our own…

In front of a jam-packed crowd consisting of fans, family and media at Bobby V’s in Stamford on Tuesday night, Jimmy Burchfield Sr. unveiled the details of “Summer Heat 2023,” an absolutely stacked boxing card taking place on August 12th at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, CT.

Featured at the podium were Stamford pro boxers Chordale ‘The Gift’ Booker and Slawomir Bodhziewicz, as well as a pair of amateur fighters from New Haven, Chad Dawson Jr. and Troyveon Allen.

“August 12 is going to be special, because not only will fans be treated to a great night of professional boxing, but they’ll get a 2-for-1,” stated CES Founder Jimmy Burchfield Sr. “Their ticket will also allow them to attend the ‘Jimmy Burchfield Classic Invitational,’ a USA Boxing sanctioned Amateur showcase that will take place before the pro card on August 12th.”

The pro boxing card will be headlined by newly minted WBC US Super Welterweight champion Booker (19-1, 8 KOs), who won the title at Mohegan Sun Arena in April with a spectacular 4th round knockout.

Booker will be one step closer to a title shot with an impressive victory over Puerto Rico’s Nicolas Hernandez (27-6-3, 12 KOs), especially if undisputed junior middleweight champion Jermell Charlo vacates his belts after moving up two divisions to challenge undisputed super middleweight champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez on September 30th in Las Vegas.

“This is going to be one of my best performances,” exclaimed Booker. “I haven’t been this locked in since 2018. However long it goes, it’s gonna be bad for Nicolas Hernandez. You’re going to see a great performance and a great show. This fight is not going 10.”

To celebrate National Day of the Cowboy, the Mohican Tipi Company is hosting a Texas-themed event with fun for the whole family on Saturday (July 22) and Sunday (July 23).

There will be line dancing, a falconry show, live music throughout the day, a pony patch, funfair rides, an animal show, and – to top it off – a chilli-eating competition on both days.

There will also be a parade where judges will pick the best cowboy and cowgirl, with the winners set to receive a special prize.

The namesake for north Winnipeg’s newest elementary school is an Anishinaabemowin phrase that celebrates what it means to be human and live in harmony in an interconnected world.

École Mino Pimatisiwin School is slated to open in Aurora at North Point, an up-and-coming suburb near the intersection of McPhillips Street and Murray Avenue, in September 2025.

Trustees voted unanimously in support of the Indigenous title — the first of its kind in the Seven Oaks School Division, and one of only a handful of public schools in the province named in a language other than English — at a spring meeting.
