Basketball Hall of Fame: Class of 2023 news, schedule and more

The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame will enshrine a new class of legends in Springfield, Massachusetts, this summer. The full list of nominees from the North American and women’s committees were unveiled in December. Finalists for enshrinement were announced ahead of NBA All-Star Weekend in Salt Lake City, and the full class was announced as part of the NCAA men’s basketball Final Four weekend in Houston.

The Class of 2023 will be officially enshrined in the Hall of Fame on Saturday, Aug. 12. The new summer date reflects an effort for enshrinement weekend to be more accessible to fans and guests — a change of date from recent celebrations that were held the week after Labor Day.

Enshrinement weekend will begin at Mohegan Sun in Connecticut on Friday, Aug. 11, with the tip-off celebration and awards gala, inclusive of the Class of 2023 jacket and ring presentation and the annual Hall of Fame Awards. The enshrinement ceremony will take place the following day in Springfield’s historic Symphony Hall.

Unitarian Congregation of West Chester to pay reparations to the Lenni Lenape people

In a special service on Sunday, April 16 at 10 a.m., the Unitarian Congregation of West Chester will pay reparations to the Lenni Lenape people. For the service, the congregation will be joined by Chief Chuck DeMund of the Lenape Nation of Pennsylvania, who will share stories, history, and teachings, as well as information about current struggles for recognition. All proceeds from the special collection will benefit the Lenape Nation of Pennsylvania.

The reparations program began with a conversation the congregation’s Minister, Rev. Dan Schatz, held with the Social Justice Committee and Board of Trustees. “We often acknowledge that our building stands on land that is part of the Lenape homeland,” said Rev. Schatz, “but without reparations, acknowledgments don’t mean that much.” The congregation, which shares its offering with community organizations once a month, decided to commit one Sunday a year to the Lenape people. “Many of us will be giving reparations for the land on which our homes sit, as well as the congregation,” said Rev. Schatz, “and this year is just a beginning.”

In giving reparations, Rev. Schatz acknowledges the complicated issues involved. “There are Lenape who were forcibly removed to reservations in the West, and there are Lenape here in Pennsylvania, struggling for legal recognition. Both deserve support. We decided to begin by giving to the Lenape Nation of Pennsylvania because it offers us the opportunity to be directly engaged and begin to build relationships.”

Pennsylvania is one of only 13 states that that does not recognize a tribe within its boundaries.  The Lenape Nation of Pennsylvania, a 501c3, is lobbying the state legislature for the same status granted to Lenape communities…

District 2 Girls Basketball Championships: Abington Heights falls; Scranton Prep takes title

WILKES-BARRE TWP. – Abington Heights made its eighth straight trip to Mohegan Sun Arena March 4 for the District 2 girls basketball championship, making it the only program left to have played in every year of championship games there.

Kallie Booth made sure the Lady Comets came home without a title for just the second time in that record run.

Booth scored all 12 Pittston Area fourth-quarter points and helped the Lady Patriots limit the Lady Comets to nine second-half points in a 36-32 victory.

Abington Heights committed just two turnovers, a record low for the games at the arena, but the Lady Comets struggled to hit shots and Booth cleared nine of her game-high 10 rebounds on the defensive end.

Pittston Area held Abington Heights to 1-for-9 (11.1 percent) 3-point shooting in the second half and 5-for-19 (26.3) for the game. The Lady Patriots limited the Lady Comets to 4-for-20 (20.0) overall in the second half and 13-for-49 (26.5) in the game.

That defensive effort and Booth’s clutch late-game efforts helped Pittston Area avenge a 38-31 loss in the same district title match-up a year ago.

“Kallie was tremendous,” Pittston Area coach Jeff Gregory said. “She didn’t have the greatest night last year.

“I just think she was focused tonight.”

Abington Heights led by five with less than five minutes remaining.

Booth did all the scoring in a 9-0 run that began with her 3-pointer from the left corner with 4:30 left and ended with one of two free throws for a 33-29 lead with 1:53 to go.

Pittston Area, the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 champion, had the best overall record in District 2 in the regular season at 21-1.

“The main thing is they got nine points in the second half,” Gregory said. “The defensive end won…
