New visitor center at Mohican State Park debuts this week

LOUDONVILLE, Ohio – Mohican State Park, one of Ohio’s most popular outdoor spaces, will debut a new visitor center this week.

The $4.7 million center, which opens Tuesday, will feature information about park activities, park geography and the flora and fauna of the area, plus plenty of places for hikers and other visitors to take a load off.

“Mohican to me is about trees and hikes through the beautiful forest, maybe canoeing down the beautiful waterways,” said Mary Mertz, director of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. “The visitor center will reflect that. It will have a lodge feel to it along with a beautiful porch space.”

It will also have a fireplace, interactive public art and “great bathrooms – which is always the most important thing for park visitors,” said Mertz.

The 5,200-square foot center is located off Ohio 3, just south of Loudonville, about 70 miles southwest of Cleveland.

It’s adjacent to the Clear Fork Branch of the Mohican River and the entrance to the park campground. It will be open year-round.

The structure is one of a handful of visitor centers being added to Ohio’s most popular state parks in recent years. In 2019, the state added a visitor center to Hocking Hills State Park, the state’s flagship in Southeast Ohio.

A visitor center at Portage Lakes State Park in Summit County is expected to open this fall.

Mohican State Park, with 1,110 acres in southern Ashland County, is surrounded by 4,450 acres of Mohican Memorial State Forest.

The park is home to an overnight lodge, camping sites and cabins, plus hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding trails. For information: ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/mohican-state-park

Full schedule planned for annual Powwow

Guests at the annual Nanticoke Indian Powwow next month — where the theme will be “The brave, the strong and the united” — can buy a book about the native language, enjoy traditional dancing and drumming and exhibits, shop for arts and crafts and taste delicacies like fry bread sprinkled with cinnamon and powdered sugar.

Indian tacos will also be on the menu, as well as favorites including succotash for guests to enjoy as they stroll the grounds at Hudson Fields in Milton from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6, and Sunday, Sept. 7. Admission costs $10 for adults, $5 for children 11 to 17 and free for children 10 and younger.

“This year’s theme highlights the resiliency of all indigenous people. I think there is interest in the powwow because we provide cultural presentations, the dance specials we have, and also because it’s a very educational event. It’s not just presentations of the dancing,” Assistant Nanticoke Chief Farrah Stigall told Coastal Point.

“The Nanticoke powwow is a time-honored tradition where indigenous people and guests from all backgrounds come together to honor the past, embrace the present and build cultural bridges for the future. This year’s powwow will showcase traditional dances, powerful drum circles, native artisans and Indigenous cuisine, all in the spirit of respect, sharing and celebration. Everyone is welcome to attend, whether you’re native, non-native, local or visiting for the first time. Bring your family, your curiosity and your respect and come be part of a powerful cultural exchange,” she said.

A church service is planned for 9 a.m. on Sunday.

Dignitaries have been invited including Delaware Sen. Lisa Blunt Rochester. Keith Colston will be emcee, and explain history of the tribe and meanings of dances. Urie Ridgeway will be arena director. Red Blanket of New…

Families Enjoyed Food And Fun At Lake Lenape Park For National Night Out

https://img.particlenews.com/image.php?url=04XnKI_13cdtAOI00Jahna Michal

Mays Landing truly showed up and showed out this year for National Night Out, and if you missed it, don’t worry, they’re doing it again next year.

It was held on Tuesday night at the beautiful Lake Lenape Park.

The annual event brought the community together in the best way possible. For over 40 years, the first Tuesday in August has been all about connecting local law enforcement and first responders with the communities they serve.

This year was no different.

Food, Fun, And Family

It was perfect. Picture the park full of smiling faces, the smell of food trucks and tacos wafting through the air, kids laughing as they bounced from one inflatable to the next.

SO CUTE!

Mays Landing pulled out all the stops. I’m talking food trucks lining the walkways, ice cream and water ice (yes, please), face painting, and more bouncy houses than the little kids could count.

It was truly a family-friendly dream.

Fire Trucks, K-9s & Community

One of the highlights of National Night Out was getting up close and personal with the town’s finest.

Police cruisers, fire trucks, and EMS vehicles were all on display, looking extra shiny, of course.

Officers and firefighters were chatting with families, handing out goodies, and even joining in the fun.

Oh! Can we talk about the dog show?! Yep, Mays Landing hosted a K-9 demonstration that totally stole the spotlight.

National Night Out REALLY Matters

Beyond the fun, the night served a bigger purpose… unity.

It’s events like these that remind us how important it is to connect with those who work hard to keep us safe every day.

Shoutout to Mays Landing and all the towns across South Jersey who made this year’s National Night Out such a success. Can’t wait to do it again next August!

Take a look at how the night went…
