Gaming Control Board imposes $50,000 fine on Mohegan Pennsylvania

PLAINS TWP. — The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board on Wednesday approved three consent agreements presented by the Board’s Office of Enforcement Counsel during its public meeting regarding violations that occurred at casinos.

Total fines levied were $67,500.

The approved consent agreements were the result of negotiations between OEC and:

• Downs Racing, L.P., operator of Mohegan Pennsylvania, a $50,000 fine for allowing individuals under the age of 21 to gain access to the gaming floor. In the first incident, the individual gained access multiple times to gamble. In the other incident, the individual gained access and was provided alcohol.

• Holdings Acquisition, L.P., operator of Rivers Casino Pittsburgh, a $10,000 fine for allowing an individual under the age of 21 to gain access to the gaming floor and gamble.

• Sugarhouse HSP Gaming, L.P., operator of Rivers Casino Philadelphia, a $7,500 fine for allowing an untrained employee to deal roulette.

Copies of the approved consent agreements offering more details on these matters are available upon request through the Board’s Office of Communications.

The Board also acted on petitions filed by OEC to ban seven adults from all casinos in the Commonwealth for leaving a total of nine minors unattended in order to engage in gaming activities:

• A male and female were placed on the Involuntary Exclusion List after leaving a 9-year-old child unattended in a hotel room numerous times at Mt. Airy Casino Resort for a total of 7 hours 48 minutes over a 2-½ day period in order to gamble.

• A male patron was placed on the Involuntary Exclusion List after leaving a 5-year-old child unattended in a vehicle in the parking garage of Rivers Casino Philadelphia for 35 minutes while he gambled in the sportsbook.

Skidmore professor to discuss history and fiction in “Last of the Mohicans”

Thursday, Aug. 3, Dr. Nick Junkerman, an Associate Professor of Literature at Skidmore College, will present “James Fenimore Cooper: History & Fiction in ‘The Last of the Mohicans.’” The program will begin at 7 p.m. at the Fort William Henry Conference Center, 48 Canada Street, Lake George. The event is co-sponsored by the Lake George Battlefield Park Alliance and the French & Indian War Society at Lake George.

James Fenimore Cooper’s “Last of the Mohicans” presents an exciting and romantic fictionalized account of the siege and surrender of Fort William Henry. For many Americans, knowledge of the French and Indian War is limited to Cooper’s work. “Every day, guests come to the Fort William Henry Museum who either read Cooper’s book or saw the movie,” says Kathy Flacke Muncil, CEO of Fort William Henry Corp. “Our guides separate fact from fiction so visitors leave with a better understanding of this era in history.”

According to Russell P. Bellico, a trustee of the Lake George Battlefield Park Alliance, “The French and Indian War was a complex, lengthy power struggle for control of North America. Because Cooper’s depiction of the siege published nearly 70 years later was so popular, it became the most recognized event of the French and Indian War.” Bellico is the author of “Empires in the Mountains”and several other books on the region’s vast history.

Dr. Junkerman will talk about the legendary events that took place in and around Fort William Henry in August 1757 and point out differences in the fictional account depicted in Cooper’s novel. Admission to the program is free; however, space is limited, so organizers encourage those wishing to attend to register by email to info@lakegeorgebattlefield.org.

Also of note: At noon on Aug. 9, the French and Indian War Society…

The main risk posed by a massive development proposal for the village of Nanticoke in Haldimand County is that Stelco — Haldimand’s biggest employer — may pack up and leave if a new town of 40,000 people is built on its doorstep.

“Stelco has been very vocal that if we go ahead with this development and bring houses there, they will move,” Haldimand Mayor Shelley Ann Bentley told The Hamilton Spectator.

A senior executive with the steelmaker told Haldimand council as much during a meeting shortly after Empire Communities’ proposal to build 15,000 homes inside the Nanticoke industrial park became public knowledge.

“This puts us at risk,” said Trevor Harris, Stelco’s vice-president for corporate affairs, at a March 2022 council meeting.

Rezoning the lands around the company’s Lake Erie steelworks to residential, Harris said, “will have a negative impact to Stelco and its future operations.”

“Based on the information we have before us here today, we can provide you no assurance that we will be here in 20 years,” he told council.
