The West Chester Green Team launched its summer family education series on Saturday, June 24, during a rare break in the weekend’s downpours.
A group of almost 40 people of all ages gathered at West Chester Friends Meeting House to hear Chris Applegate from the Museum of Indian Culture in Allentown. Applegate spoke about the daily lives of the Lenape tribe 500 years ago, before the arrival of colonists. She displayed dozens of items including a pair of elk-hide moccasins. Pennsylvania, she told her audience, is the home of the largest elk herd in the country, living appropriately in Elk County. In so many other ways, however, there have been vast changes since those times. Now the Lenape live as others do, with cell phones, cars, and jobs.

Applegate talked about the importance of music to the tribe and showed a turtle shell rattle and shakers made from deer hoofs. She demonstrated a bow and arrows, as well as a spear. A Lenape style cradle board with a life-size doll in it, carried by a strap on the forehead, not by shoulder straps as are modern baby packs. was also shown. Applegate described the grinding of corn and the growing of “Three Sisters” vegetables, with corn in the center and beans and squash by its side, asking audience participants to volunteer to play the roles of the vegetables. Planting in this way insured the health of the crops and, when eaten together, “the three sisters” provided healthy, balanced nutrition.
“Wanishi” means thank you in the Lenape language, with generosity the core value of the culture. In her concluding…

Huge fire takes out Lenape Arena
By LAURIE STUART
NARROWSBURG, NY — On Friday afternoon, June 23, a fire tore through the headquarters of Lang Industries. By Monday morning, owner Ned Lang was working at a temporary desk in a trailer on a small hill above the twisted metal hulk of the former Lenape Arena, 2.5 miles south of the hamlet of Narrowsburg. He was on the phone with one of his workers who was picking up supplies and planning the rebuild.
“I lost 40 years of tools, equipment and trucks,” he said, as he surveyed the damage that had, in a matter of minutes, devoured the steel and wood building.
“I was in Carbondale when my wife called me,” he said. “And I could hear the explosions; it sounded like Beirut. But thank God, no one was killed. Everyone got out.”
A worker who had just returned from a truck run let himself into a locked area to put gas into a lawn mower. Unfortunately, he entered the closed space with a lit cigarette. The worker received second degree burns on his forearms and is expected to make a full recovery, Lang said.
“I’ve got trucks already ordered from New Holland and we’ll be up and running as soon as we can,” Lang said, adding that it was lucky that his solid waste facility, located just beyond the arena building, was not damaged. “The paint isn’t even blistered,” he said.
Firefighters from Lava and Narrowsburg were alerted for a structure fire with a victim burned shortly after 12 noon. Upon arrival, Narrowsburg Fire Department Fire Chief David Casey requested initial mutual aid with a full response from Yulan Fire Department and Lake Huntington Fire Company. The victim was treated by EMS from Tusten Volunteer Ambulance Service, Highland Ambulance Service and Mobilemedic EMS and transported to…
WILKES-BARRE, PA – Developing younger harness racing pacers had a $16,000 feature race for each sex conducted over off going on Tuesday (June 27) afternoon at Pocono Downs at Mohegan Pennsylvania.
The males were led by the Stay Hungry sophomore gelding Im Hungry, a three-quarter brother to millionaire Beach Glass, a PA Stallion Series winner, and now triumphant in three consecutive starts after a 1:51.4 mile over a “sloppy” oval.

The track’s leading driver, Matt Kakaley, tucked in third with the winner as Oak Grove shipper Bay City led the field past the quarter in :27.2, then brushed to command in front of the stands and reached the half in :56.3 and the three-quarters in 1:24.3.
Bay City came out of the pocket to give good chase down the stretch in the :27.1 kicker, but he came up a neck shy of Im Hungry, who is trained by Travis Alexander and owned by Brent McGrath of Somebeachsomewhere fame.
IM HUNGRY REPLAY
The same basic storyline was followed in the section for distaffs, with the Lazarus N three-year-old filly Anna’s Wish equaling her mark of 1:52.2 over a surface upgraded to “good” before the race. Tyler Buter had a post inside all the main leavers and put them all in behind early, enabling him to guide his filly through fractions of :27.2, :57, and 1:24.1.
Sweet Home swung wide from second-over in the stretch and was doing nicely late, but Anna’s Wish was able to keep that one at bay by a half-length for trainer Jenn Bongiorno and owners Robert Weinstein and Jordon Sklut.
