Zimbabwe makes arrests of UK health workers recruitment agents

A couple who tricked people into falling for false job placements in Ireland as well as Canada and the UK have been arrested in Zimbabwe.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police arrested Sitshengisiwe Ndlovu and Alison Unami for fraudulently promoting overseas jobs that led to a loss of $134,552 (123,327) for their victims.

According to police, the two posed as agents of an undisclosed company that claimed they could secure jobs and work permits in Canada, United Kingdom and Ireland for Zimbabweans seeking to relocate.

In a statement seen by Pindula News, police said the arrests were made in connection with 46 counts of fraud between August 2022 and May 3, 2023.

It was reported that on May 3, Police in Bulawayo arrested Alison Unami (30) after a report had been made by one of the complainants.

The suspect was arrested while loading property in a vehicle, as the couple prepared to vacate from their offices.

The other suspect, Sitshengisiwe Ndlovu (46) was later arrested at Bulawayo Police Station, where she had visited her husband.

Police investigations revealed that processing of the purported employment opportunities was promised within three weeks following the payment of US$4,000, with interviews conducted via WhatsApp.

The suspects would then give the complainants excuses after the waiting period lapsed.

Some 46 victims fell for the scam and were defrauded approximately $134 552 in total.

Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi urged the public to exercise caution and thoroughly research individuals and employment agencies claiming to assist with job placements abroad.

Police: Man found in shallow grave at Mohegan Park in Norwich a homicide victim

NORWICH ― An unidentified man whose body was found partially buried in a shallow grave at a Norwich park was the victim of a homicide, police said

Norwich police said a pedestrian at approximately 4:15 p.m. on Sunday noticed “something” protruding from the ground at Mohegan Park that he believed was a person. Patrol officers verified it was a deceased individual and an autopsy determined the cause of death as a gunshot wound.

Police on Monday afternoon said evidence suggests the victim, a Black or Hispanic man between the ages of 35-50, was not murdered at the park. The incident appears to be the result of a targeted attack on the victim, police said.

The victim is described as being approximately 5 feet, 10 inches tall and weighing between 150-160 pounds with black hair/box braids and a goatee or short beard. The deceased was missing his top four front teeth, police said.

More: At 15, he brutally killed a Norwich teacher and her son. Reform gave him a parole hearing.

There was no clothing description and the man’s identity is still unknown.

Stockbridge tribe seeks to recover ancestral homeland at Fenn Farm

STOCKBRIDGE — On a pristine, forested property at the northern tip of Monument Mountain is Fenn Farm — 351 acres of scenic undeveloped land.

The ancestral homelands once belonged to the Stockbridge Munsee Band of Mohican Indians. Last fall, it went on the market for $3 million following the death in July of owner Clover Swann, the artist, author and longtime member of the Stockbridge Land Trust.

Her former house has been carved out of the potential sale marketed by William Pitt/Sotheby’s International Realty in Great Barrington.

Last week the tribe submitted a $2.5 million funding application to the state’s Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness Action Grant program for the purchase and conservation of the property. Grant awards are expected to be announced this summer.

“Since we’ve been dispossessed of our land out East, we’ve always attempted to reacquire our originally ceded territory,” said Shannon Holsey, tribal president based in Bowler, Wisconsin. “Our stars must have aligned when this property became available, with the outreach of allies and partners throughout Massachusetts to assist us.”

Zimbabwe Arrests Duo For Duping Public Of Job Placements In Canada, UK, Ireland

Zimbabwe police arrested Sitshengisiwe Ndlovu and Alison Unami for fraudulently promising overseas jobs, causing USD 134,552 in losses.

In a statement seen by Pindula News, police said the arrests were made in connection with 46 counts of fraud between August 2022 and May 3, 2023. The suspects allegedly posed as agents of an undisclosed company facilitating job placements in Canada, the United Kingdom, and Ireland. Reads the statement:

ARREST OF TWO SUSPECTS FOR DUPING THE PUBLIC FOR PURPORTED JOB PLACEMENTS ABROAD

The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms the arrest of a couple, Sitshengisiwe Ndlovu (46) and Alison Unami (30) in connection with forty-six (46) counts of fraud which occurred between August 2022 and 03 May 2023. The suspects duped the complainants USD 134 552. 00 after allegedly posing as agents of an undisclosed company involved in facilitating job placements in Canada, United Kingdom and Ireland.

On 03rd May 2023, Police in Bulawayo arrested Alison Unami (30) after a report had been made by one of the complainants. The suspect was arrested while loading property in a vehicle, preparing to vacate from their known offices. The other suspect, Sitshengisiwe Ndlovu (46) was later arrested at Bulawayo Police Station, where she had visited her husband.

Investigations made by the police revealed that the processing of the purported employment opportunities abroad by the suspects, was said to be done within three weeks upon payment of US$4000, resulting in interviews being conducted through WhatsApp. The suspects would give the complainants excuses upon the lapse of the waiting period. Resultantly, forty-six (46) victims fell for the scam and were defrauded approximately USD 134 552.00.

Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi urged the public to exercise caution and thoroughly research individuals and employment agencies claiming to assist with job placements abroad.

Norwich police investigating homicide after body found in park

Someone found the body while walking through Mohegan Park.

NORWICH, Conn — Someone walking through Mohegan Park Monday found a body buried in a shallow grave. Police are investigating the incident as a homicide.

At 4:14 p.m., police said the walker called police after they noticed something sticking out from the ground. When police arrived, they confirmed it was a dead Black or Hispanic man, between the ages of 35 and 50 years old, who had been shot. The death has been ruled a homicide.

The dead man was located inside Mohegan Park partially buried in a shallow grave. Police said the evidence at the scene suggested that the actual homicide did not occur within the park.  Police said it appears to be a targeted attack against the dead man. 

The man’s identity is unknown as of this date.  Police said he was approximately 5’10” tall, weighed 150-160 lbs., and had black hair/box braids, a goatee, or short beard. He is missing the top four front teeth. Police did not release a clothing description.

My recent column (“Beavers, the historic dam builders, make a comeback” published March 17, 2023) drew the interest of Clarence King. The Northampton resident is a knowledgeable expert on the origins and ecology of Silver Lake Park in Bristol Township.

“Excellent article on beavers. You have returned back into my little world again,” Clarence began. “Bristol has a Beaver Street which extends into Bristol Township as Beaver Dam Road. I have no idea when that road received its name, but the road has been there since 1696. You have to assume the beaver dam in the road’s name is for a beaver dam north of Silver Lake or somewhere on nearby Mill Creek.

Neighborhood group in Detroit to turn vacant lot into park

(CBS DETROIT) – A neighborhood group in Detroit has a new project underway.

The Mohican-Regent Resident’s Association recently bought a vacant lot, hoping to turn it into a spot for people to come together.

On the corner of East State Fair Avenue and Anvil Street in Detroit, sits an empty lot people in the area say has been an eyesore for decades.

Soon, George Preston says that’s going to change.

“Our plan is to have a sitting park, a place where people can come and sit and relax,” said Preston, president of the Mohican-Regent Resident’s Association.

Preston says the vacant land has been a sight of blight for far too long.

“For years, it looked like a forest and people were beginning to dump here. It was just an ugly site,” Preston said.

With the help of the city, grants and donations, the association was able to buy the 8 lots that make up this property.

“Our goal is to put a path over here and we’re going to fence it all in, then we’ll put benches and tables over here,” said Preston.

A mural is also on the list of things to create. Preston says the group has already started cleaning up the site.

All they need to get the job done is more volunteers. Donations always help too.

“We’re always looking for donations,” said Preston.
