Chief public defender replaced in defending Nanticoke man on fatal drug driving charges

Apr. 25—WILKES-BARRE — A Nanticoke man charged in the drug driving death of James Mahon in Plymouth last year was appointed a new defense attorney Tuesday due to a breakdown in the attorney-client relationship with his previous lawyer, Luzerne County Chief Public Defender Steven M. Greenwald.

Jose Calo, 58, of Pine Street, was under the influence of fentanyl when he crashed his Ford Explorer that killed Mahon, 86, in the area of 10 E. Main St. on June 25, according to court records.

Greenwald graduated in 1977 from Wyoming Valley West High School when Mahon was an assistant principal.

Calo when presented with a plea agreement offered by the District Attorney’s Office in March began to express his disappointment that Greenwald had a prior “relationship” with Mahon, according to court records.

Greenwald said he had no relationship with Mahon other than the fact Mahon was an assistant principal at the high school he attended. Greenwald said he had not spoken with Mahon in nearly 45 years.

Despite the near half century of not seeing or speaking with Mahon, Calo felt there was a conflict with Greenwald defending him on charges of homicide by vehicle, homicide by vehicle while driving under a controlled substance, accidents involving death, driving under a controlled substance, driving with a suspended license and several traffic violations.

Since March, Calo refused to meet with Greenwald and members of the public defender’s office at the county correctional facility.

Greenwald filed a motion for a conflict attorney to be appointed to represent Calo.

In court Tuesday, President Judge Michael T. Vough said defendants have a right to be represented by an attorney but don’t have the right to chose an attorney if they are unable to afford one themselves.

Greenwald said the attorney-client relationship with Calo has broken down despite not agreeing with Calo that there was a…

Longshots take both Weiss Series divisions

WILKES-BARRE, PA – A pair of 13-1 longshots won their $20,000 third and final preliminary harness racing divisions of the Bobby Weiss Series at Pocono Downs for three-year-old trotting colts at Mohegan Pennsylvania on a cool Sunday night (April 23).

Braxten Boyd’s 13-1 winner wasn’t as surprising as it might be otherwise, as the 23-year-old rising star added $28.20 Wentworth Hanover to Sunday victories with $42.20, $28.40, $11.60 and $11.20 shots. Wentworth Hanover, an International Moni gelding trained by Clifton Green for the LCT Stable, got the best post draw of his five-race career and made the most of it, closing for a neck victory over G Load while breaking his maiden in 1:56.2. Favored Moni Book, off wins in the first two legs, set the pace but had to settle for third, a half-length back.

WENTWORTH HANOVER REPLAY

Mark MacDonald used opposite tactics with 13-1 shot Snowman Hanover, and the Bar Hopping gelding drew away in the last quarter while lowering his mark to 1:55.4. Ray Schnittker trains the winner for
Schnittker Bordogna, Arden Homestead Stable, Steven Arnold, and Ted Gewertz. Next week’s $50,000 Weiss Championship for this division now looks more wide-open than it did entering the evening.

SNOWMAN HANOVER REPLAY

Top pacing events on the night card were a pair of $16,500 contests for the highest-priced claiming horses on the grounds. And the hottest claimer on the grounds, the Art Official gelding Park Official, rolled to his seventh straight victory in one division, charging up the inside as the pocket rocket for a 1:53 win for driver Anthony Napolitano (one behind Boyd with four winners on…

Local man completes 52 Hike Challenge Winter Series

Bridge of Dreams in Brinkhaven, Ohio, upon completion of my 52 Hike Challenge 2022. | Courtesy of Clark Schwenke

Welcome back, everyone; I hope our mild winter allowed you to get out and enjoy the outdoors. For those who were keeping track, I did finish my 52 Hike Challenge for 2022 in October of last year, with a 10K hike that took me from Glenmont to Brinkhaven on the Holmes County Trail and Mohican Valley Trail.

Since then, I have completed the 52 Hike Challenge Winter Series with 30 Hours of hiking from December to February and am well into my 52 Hike Challenge 2023. So far this year, I have visited seven national parks or national historic sites, hiked in five states, doing a portion of the Appalachian Trail in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia, and set a personal record for my greatest elevation gain in a single hike, with 1,200 feet up in 2 miles on Bob’s Hill in the Catoctin Mountains of Maryland. In addition, I have hiked various terrain and weather conditions, using many of the tips, tricks and much of the gear I recommended last year.

During my 52 Hike Challenge Winter Series, I managed to get a day off shortly after one of our biggest snows this winter and spent the day at Mohican State Park. I hiked a little over 10 miles that day, and the scenery was worth the temperatures. I started out from the Covered Bridge, hiked the Lyons Falls Trail to Big Lyon Falls, on to Little Lyon Falls and out to Pleasant Hill Dam. From there, I hiked the Pleasant Hill Trail and Hemlock Gorge Trail back to the Class A Campground off of State Route 3. I returned to the Covered Bridge on the Hemlock Gorge Trail,…

Local Event: Foodways of the Lenapehocking

A Testimony from Haverford Friends Meeting

Please join Haverford Friends in Supporting

A spiritually lead presentation by our own William Woys Weaver

The Foodways of the Lenapehocking

This Saturday, April 29th , 1PM

(With child centered activities in the forum room)

The Foodways of Lenapehocking: Garden Plants and Food Customs

This Power Point presentation by well-known author Dr. William Woys Weaver will explore the story of The Roughwood Seed Collection and how it acquired what is now considered the largest collection of Eastern Woodland seeds in private hands. Several members of Haverford Meeting, such as the late Indian activist Theodore Hetzel, who was a long-time member, helped to build this priceless cultural archive. A sub-theme of the lecture will be the relationship between Quakers and saving seeds from indigenous people.

Refreshments will be served following the lecture and will include Lenape Psindamocan Bread (parched sweet corn bread) containing dried cranberries in reference to an ancient Lenape creation story. In honor of the mutual respect between William Penn and the Lenape peoples, the Psindamocan Bread will be served on a great pewter charger given by William Penn as a wedding gift to Dr. Weaver’s ancestor Benjamin Hickman (1677-1742) and Ann Buffington who were married at Concord Friends Meeting on April 9, 1701. Ann Buffington was the daughter of Richard Buffington (1655-1747), Proprietor of New Jersey and friend of William Penn.

“Our message today is twofold:

First, Quakers against all odds managed to preserve some of this Native American heritage as an unspoken token of respect for William Penn’s message of peace and tolerance.

Secondly, the message of wampum: the mutual love and respect of cultures living side by side. The word for wampum (kekok)translates in the Delaware language: I give this from my heart. This is my bond…
