Berwick Bulldogs vs. Wyoming Area Warriors

The Berwick Bulldogs will head out on the road to take on the Wyoming Area Warriors at 4:15 p.m. on Thursday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, these teams will really light up the scoreboard.

As a matter of fact, Berwick put up the most runs they have all season on Wednesday. They blew past Greater Nanticoke Area 16-2. The victory continues a trend for the Bulldogs in their matchups with the Trojans: they’ve now won six in a row.

Makayla Brown made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 11 batters over five innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off three hits (and not a single walk). She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn’t given up more than one walk in three consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter’s box, scoring a run and stealing a base while getting on base in two of her four plate appearances.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Emma Welsh, who went 3-for-4 with one home run, six RBI, and two runs. Those six RBI gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Ashlyn Klahold, who scored four runs while going 3-for-4.

Berwick kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 15 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Greater Nanticoke Area only managed four hits.

Meanwhile, Wyoming Area waltzed into their contest on Wednesday with four straight wins… but they left with five. They never…

UN urges accountability after Iraqi detainee dies following alleged torture

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) on Tuesday urged Iraqi authorities to investigate the death of Bashir Khalid Lateef in Baghdad, ten days after he was taken into custody amid allegations that he was tortured in detention.

“The Mission is deeply concerned about reports the victim suffered from traumatic injuries during detention and was transferred to hospital where he died on 7 April, 10 days after having been taken into custody and held in a police station first and then in a detention centre,” UNAMI said on X.

Lateef, an engineer, was arrested on March 30 in Baghdad’s al-A’amiriya neighborhood. In a video published on Saturday, the Iraqi interior ministry said that Lateef was filmed “sneaking through a fence” to enter an apartment in a residential complex reportedly belonging to Major General Abbas al-Tamimi. According to the ministry, a fight broke out between Lateef and Tamimi’s sons before police detained him.

The ministry said Lateef was taken to a detention center, where security camera footage purportedly showed him being “severely beaten” by other detainees.

In the statement, UNAMI said it “emphasizes the importance of conducting a fair, transparent, and independent investigation that leads to accountability for those responsible for human rights abuses, and the adoption of measures and procedures to prevent their recurrence.”

Sabah al-Numan, spokesperson for both the Iraqi Joint Operations Command and the commander-in-chief of the armed forces, revealed on Monday that Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani has directed a “high-level investigative committee” to investigate Lateef’s death.

He stressed that the incident “will not pass without holding those responsible accountable and determining the true reasons that led to his death.”

“We affirm that we will not be lenient with anyone who dares to harm Iraqis or act outside the legal framework, disregarding the principles of human rights and dignity,”…

Ron John discusses trade to Buffalo, reuniting with Tehoka Nanticoke and his love for Fortnite

If you ran into the newest Buffalo Bandit, Ron John, during the week, it’d probably be on a lacrosse field. In fact, the former Ottawa Black Bear was coaching when he learned of the March 10 trade.

John serves as an assistant coach for both Lake Shore High School and the Seneca War Chiefs, a Junior B box lacrosse team. With the latter, he coaches alongside former Bandit Darris Kilgour.

Bandits.com caught up with the Angola, N.Y. native to discuss the trade, his reuniting with close friend Tehoka Nanticoke and playing Fortnite.

How did you learn you’d become a Buffalo Bandit?

It was funny. We were doing preseason practice for high school lacrosse and I was in the middle of practice, so I hadn’t checked my phone. So, I waited another drill, got my emotions collected and called him back, and that’s when he said, ‘Hey, this is what’s happening, this is what we wanted, this is how it went down.’ And then he ended the call with, ‘I think you’re going to fit in, and we sent you to Buffalo.’

A big mix of emotions there, so it was pretty crazy to deal with, but I think what made it easy was that I was in the middle of practice. So, I was able to bring everyone in. I talked to them about it. Talked to them about how getting traded away sucks and all that, with all the friends and family you make through the years. I ended it off with them and told them that I was going to Buffalo, and the…

The statement added that “the meeting also discussed the most prominent issues on the United Nations agenda in light of regional and international geopolitical changes, as well as the priorities and concerns of the Group of 77 and China, currently chaired by Iraq, particularly in the areas of financing for development, climate change, and sustainable development.”

According to the statement, the Iraqi representative affirmed “the group’s keenness to strengthen partnership with the United Nations and its specialized agencies to achieve common goals in accordance with the principle of collective responsibility.”
