Plenty of happy campers take part in Wood County 4-H summer programs

MINERAL WELLS — Local 4-H members participated in a variety of activities this summer at camp which wrapped up on June 30.

More than 200 youth were involved in one or more of four camps this summer at the Wood County 4-H Camp in Mineral Wells.

One-day camp for 5-8-year-old campers kicked off the month and provided kids an opportunity to spend a day at 4-H camp. The regional 4-H horse camp provided learning opportunities for 40 kids from Wood and surrounding counties to learn a variety of disciplines. Horse ownership was not required to attend this camp, and all the participants had the opportunity to ride during the week. Wood County 4-H also hosted more than 130 campers at younger and older 4-H residential camps.

This year campers participated in a variety of learning opportunities including cooking, sewing, folk and line dancing, STEM, nature discoveries, fishing, shooting sports, cake decorating, photography, arts and crafts, and more.

Special guests at 4-H Camp included presentations from the Boy Scouts of America Kootaga Indian Dancers, virtual reality careers with MOV Career Connections, Mindfulness and Kidding Around Yoga with Pamela Santer of Mindful West Virginia, Mineral Wells Volunteer Fire Department, and basic beekeeping with Mountaineer Beekeepers. Older 4-H Campers had a surprise visit from the West Virginia University Mountaineer Mascot, Mikel Hager.

Maryland is making more outdoor space accessible to more people

Governor Wes Moore recently unveiled a new summer tourism campaign for Maryland – “You’re Welcome” – to welcome visitors to experience our great state’s spectacular natural beauty. 

Most people are familiar with our vast Maryland state park system, but did you know that great hiking, biking, birdwatching, camping, water access, and other recreational opportunities are found in our state forests, wildlife management areas, and other lesser-visited public lands? If you really do want to get away from it all, I encourage you to check out the array of natural areas managed by the Department of Natural Resources.

For example, visitors to the Nanticoke Wildlife Management Area on Maryland’s Eastern Shore can spot nesting bald eagles and osprey diving for fish. The mostly undeveloped Nanticoke River’s coastline offers paddlers a chance to try to spot diamondback terrapins, beavers, and otters while exploring long-established marshland. Visitors who head to Maryland’s western panhandle should consider exploring Dan’s Mountain Wildlife Management Area, the largest state forest, where dense woods have created prime habitat for forest songbirds. The area was designated as a State Significant Bird Area by the National Audubon Society and is home to other animals such as bobcats, black bears, and coyotes.   

We continue to partner with land trusts and local communities to expand access to these important natural areas, as we did recently by purchasing a former golf club in Worcester County to expand recreational opportunities in the state’s Chesapeake Forest lands.

‘Wheelie Wednesdays’ Returning to Doylestown, Teaching Young Residents How to Ride Their Bikes

The event gives local children the chance to learn the joys of riding a bicycle.

A fun and interactive program is returning to Bucks County, offering young residents the chance to learn the joys of riding a bicycle.

“Wheelie Wednesdays” will be returning to Doylestown at the end of the month. The first event will be a general “Learn to Ride” program, which will be held at Central Bucks High School West on July 26.

The second event, titled “Skills and Drills”, will be held at Lenape Middle School on Aug. 9. The last event, “Bike Rodeo”, will be held at Fanny Chapman Park on Aug. 23.

“These FREE programs are designed to help your little one gain confidence on their bike and discover the joy of riding!” the Borough of Doylestown said online.

“Whether they want to ditch their training wheels or learn how to handle their bike better, Bucks County Classic has a program for them!”

The first event is sold out, but the latter two are still available for sign-ups.

Former Luzerne Borough man sentenced for firearm straw purchases

Jul. 11—WILKES-BARRE — A former Luzerne Borough man who solicited a woman to purchase firearms that were reported missing from the evidence locker room at the Luzerne Borough Police Department was sentenced in Luzerne County Court Tuesday.

President Judge Michael T. Vough sentenced Donald Myles Cool, 27, to two-to-four years in state prison on three counts of criminal solicitation to commit false written statements on firearm applications. Cool pled guilty to the charges Feb. 6.

Cool’s sentence imposed by Vough will begin once he completes a two-to-four year stint on similar offenses in Monroe County.

Court records say Cool solicited Elizabeth Ann Delong, 38, to purchase 19 firearms from licensed firearm dealers in Nanticoke and Wyoming in 2020.

Cool is a convicted felon prohibited from owning, carrying and possessing firearms, court records say.

Cool was arrested by Pocono Mountain Regional Police Department on March 3, 2021, on charges of illegally possessing firearms.

The investigation in Monroe County revealed Cool received the firearms that were purchased by Delong who lived with him on Vaughn Street.

Luzerne Borough police reportedly seized the illegally purchased firearms from the apartment of Cool and Delong in 2021.

As the investigation continued, county detectives working with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives executed a search warrant at the Luzerne Borough Police Department in early June 2022, seeking 17 firearms.

None were seized by detectives and agents, according to an inventory receipt with the search warrant.

District Attorney Sam Sanguedolce could not be reached for comment to determine if the firearms were found.

Delong pled guilty to criminal conspiracy to illegally possess a firearm and was sentenced on Nov. 28, to one year probation.

DNREC lists properties acquired through Open Space Program

The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control is listing properties acquired through the state’s Open Space Program.

Since 2022, DNREC has added 597 acres to the nearly 45,000 acres the department previously acquired through the program with combined state, federal, and partner funds.

“The Delaware Open Space Program supports our conservation work with funding and donations to help us fill in crucial gaps with easements and acquisitions – one piece at a time – between protected properties,” said DNREC Secretary Shawn M. Garvin. “These properties may be as small as an acre or a hundred times that size but serve the same purpose connecting Delaware’s protected lands, wetlands and waterways, which often may be vital habitat for our state’s threatened or endangered species. These lands also support active outdoor recreation, from hunting and fishing to birdwatching and hiking trails.”

DNREC manages 17 state parks, 20 wildlife areas and dozens of public recreation access areas including trails, overlooks, boardwalks, fishing piers and boat ramps.

Over the past year, the DNREC Division of Parks and Recreation added seven new properties in key locations, totaling approximately 254 acres:

  • Jaggers Conservation Easement – About 9 acres of wooded land adjoining the James Branch Nature Preserve and adjacent to Trap Pond State Park is included in the February 2022 easement. The property expands the protected lands within the James Branch watershed.
  • Rocky Run Ventures LLC Property – Two acres in New Castle purchased in May 2022 expanded Brandywine Creek State Park and protects forest land.
