Public to learn about Lenape people Sept. 25 at Madison museum

MADISON – The Museum of Early Trades and Crafts (METC) will host a program titled “Lenape Lifeways: Introducing the First People of Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware” at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 25.

This family-oriented program is free with regular museum admission. Pre-registration is recommended and can be found at www.metc.org.

As many as 10 million Native Americans lived in North America by the end of the 15th century.  Many thousands lived in “Lenapehocking,” the vast homeland of the Lenni Lenape, who were the first inhabitants of eastern Pennsylvania and parts of New York, New Jersey, Maryland and Delaware.

This program explores the life and times of these peaceful, progressive people, comparing and contrasting their social customs, history, religion, family life, agriculture, hunting, healing practices, arts and crafts, past and present contributions (and much more) with those of the Europeans and Colonial Americans of their time.

Carla Messinger of Native American Heritage Programs will lead this interactive program. She is the founder/director of Native American Heritage Programs and a descendant of the Lenape people, with 35 years of experience in educating the public about Lenape culture.

The organization’s mission is “to present, preserve, and perpetuate the history, lifeways, culture, and contributions of the Lenape and other Native American groups.”

The Museum of Early Trades & Crafts explores American history with a focus on the life and stories of 18th- and 19th-century craftsmen and artisans.

Drawing on its rich collection, METC seeks to connect the lives of people and their stories, while providing a bridge from the past to the future. Housed in a Richardsonian Romanesque Revival building donated by D. Willis James to the people of Madison in 1900, METC offers something for visitors of all ages.

Regular METC admission is $5 for adults, $3 for seniors, students and children…

Nanticoke Area scoreboard to be dedicated Sept. 17 in memory of Distasio

NANTICOKE — To get a real understanding of how people in the Greater Nanticoke Area School District felt about the late legendary football Coach Dan Distasio, you need to go no further than the John S. Fine High School Alumni Facebook page.

There you will read comment after comment of praise, respect admiration and love for the coach/teacher/mentor of so many that walked the halls and toiled on the gridiron at Nanticoke Area.

“I wish I would have known him better,” wrote Dave Morgan on the Facebook page. “I never heard anything other than praise from all that were in his classroom, or on the field. Outstanding individual and so appreciative of his family for their donation in his name.”

So on Friday, Sept. 17, the brand new scoreboard — donated by the Distasio family —will be dedicated in memory of Daniel J. Distasio, who died in 2006 at the age of 73.

The dedication of the scoreboard has been rescheduled due to electrical issues at the football field and will now be held on Sept. 17.

Dan Distasio, son of the late coach, said funds that were donated for the scoreboard were raised through the Daniel Distasio Memorial Golf Tournament, which was held for 13 years in honor of Coach Distasio.

“The funds were utilized to award scholarships to deserving students at Nanticoke and Crestwood,” Distasio said. “Over the years, in excess of $60,000 was awarded in scholarships. It was then decided that the remaining funds would be donated to Nanticoke in his memory.”

After discussions with school officials, Distasio said it was determined that the school was in need of an upgrade of the scoreboard and the funds were donated to the school.

“Although the ultimate decision on the donation…

In a step up from their past holiday concert celebrations, Connecticut indie-jam darlings Goose will bring their eighth annual Goosemas show to Mohegan Sun Arena on Saturday, December 18.

goosemas mohegangoosemas mohegan

The past two years have seen Connecticut rockers Goose grow from a local bar band to a premiere festival headliner who are today announcing their biggest show to date.

Goosemas began as a tradition with humble roots in the basement of a Norwalk, CT music studio. While the next four years would see the band hold an intimate event inside underground venues in Norwalk, the sixth iteration of Goosemas found the band moving the event to Wall Street Theatre. During 2020, Goosemas went up to the top of Rockefeller Plaza for a Twitch exclusive livestream, drawing over 60,000 viewers worldwide, and raised over $45,000 for charity.

We’re so stoked to host Goosemas back home in Connecticut. It has truly been incredible to see how the event has grown over the past few years, and we can’t wait to do it again in front of a live audience

guitarist/vocalist Rick Mitarotonda

This year’s show will see Goose take the stage for three sets, with plenty of surprises in store for fans. Goosemas will be the last show of a highly anticipated, 19-date national fall run, with over half of the tour already sold out.

Initial tickets will be available through a lottery, with a request period running today Tuesday, August 24th at 12 PM ET through Wednesday, August 25 at 5 PM ET. Winners will be notified before the general on-sale, beginning Friday, August 27 at 10 AM ET. Venue Presale will be held on Thurs, Aug 26 @…

Delaware Tribe Chief Chet Brooks dies; his knowledge was ‘irreplaceable’

People turned to Delaware Tribe Chief Chet Brooks for his knowledge of the past. He could recite every treaty the United States ever made with the Delaware.

When his tribe’s federal recognition was imperiled in the 1970s, Brooks met the Secretary of the Interior on the steps of the U.S. Capitol. He brought with him a list of 26 treaties that proved the Delaware existed.

“He was really proud about knowing the history of the Delaware Tribe,” said his brother, Larry “Joe” Brooks. “He knew it like a book.”

Chester “Chet” Brooks was in his second term as chief when he died Sunday, Aug. . He was 78. He had spent 35 years helping to lead the tribe in Bartlesville, in the same town he was born. He served on the Delaware Tribe’s council and trust boards before he was elected chief in November 2014.

He also was the tribe’s de-facto historian. His institutional and historical knowledge is irreplaceable, said Acting Chief Brad Kills Crow. Brooks had worked with younger leaders to pass on what he knew.

One lesson that resonated most with Kills Crow was Brooks’ ability to respect decisions made by the tribal council and move forward.

“Whether we agreed or disagreed, he ended our conversation with a smile,” said Kills Crow, who served alongside Brooks for three years as assistant chief. “It is up to us to continue moving along the path he has set for us.”

COVID-19 pandemic: Oklahoma tribes redouble vaccine efforts amid coronavirus resurgence

The Delaware Tribe, with about 11,000 citizens, is one of three related Delaware nations recognized today by the U.S. government. The others are the Delaware Nation in Anadarko and the Stockbridge-Munsee Community in Wisconsin. Their homelands in the Northeast meant they were among the first pushed out by European colonists, who referred to the people as…

New fishing-access site opens in Broome County

MAINE, N.Y. — The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) recently announced the opening of a new fishing-access site on Nanticoke Creek in Broome County.

The new Shadowbrook Fishing Access Site is located off State Route 26 at the end of Shadowbrook Drive, south of the village of Maine.

“The new Nanticoke Creek site provides visitors with easy access to newly acquired public fishing rights on the creek, as well as convenient parking for anglers while they fish a rural stream that receives annual trout stocking,” Matthew Marko, DEC Region 7 director, said in a release.

DEC Region 7 operations staff in Kirkwood, with assistance from DEC fisheries and real property staff, recently completed construction supported by $12,400 from the state’s Environmental Protection Fund. The site can accommodate up to four vehicles, and via a short footpath, the parking area provides access to a recently acquired 0.3-mile public fishing-rights easement that adjoins the site. Nanticoke Creek now has 1.3 miles of public fishing rights, per the release.

DEC stocks Nanticoke Creek annually with 2,900 brown trout. The creek begins near Nanticoke Lake and meanders for about 22 miles to its confluence with the Susquehanna River.

The opening of this new access site is part of the state’s Adventure NY Initiative to connect people to nature and provide increased access to the outdoors so that New Yorkers of all ages and abilities can experience a wide range of hands-on recreational activities, the DEC said. Additionally, improved fishing access to Nanticoke Creek is part of NY Open for Fishing and Hunting, an effort to improve recreational activities and boost tourism opportunities across the state.      …

Co-Optimus – Community Blog – 7 Best Games with Free Bonuses

If you’re like most people who play a handful of online games for fun, you love to keep your costs down. There’s nothing wrong in spending $100 on an in-game purchase. But if there’s a way to get the same item for free, that’s the option you want to follow.

Thankfully, the Internet is jam-packed with free games and real money games with plenty of freebies. This article takes a look at some of the best online games with bonuses. Let’s get started.

Video Slots

Video slots aren’t everyone’s cup of tea. They are games of pure chance. And that means you can’t use skills or strategies to win. But if you love to play real money games for fun, video slots are excellent games for claiming bonuses.

The games have two types of freebies. First, you can play a slot and activate bonuses in a bonus round. Here, you earn five, 10 or 30 free spins depending on the number of winning symbols you line up on the reels.

The second way to earn bonuses from slots is through casinos. Some websites reward new players with slot bonuses immediately they create a new account. Or they wait until a player makes their first deposit.

The Mohegan Sun casino is an excellent example. The New Jersey-based casino offers Mohegan Sun bonus codes to all new customers. The offers include a $20 no deposit bonus and a 100% match on your first deposit worth a maximum of $1000.

Rocket League

Launched in 2015, Rocket League has been growing popular day after day. The game’s involvement in eSports is advancing its stock even more: winning millions of new customers monthly.

For the uninitiated, Rocket League is a video game about controlling massively flexible, unbelievably indestructible vehicles to…

Man City’s Riyad Mahrez gets read the riot act for his blond hair

The last thing a footballer might expect to be berated for on international duty is the colour of his hair, but that’s exactly the fate that’s befallen Manchester City’s Riyad Mahrez and West Ham United’s Said Benrahma.

The pair turned up to play in Algeria’s matches, only to be brought back down to earth by manager, Djamel Belmadi, according to Dzair Daily cited by the Daily Star.

It’s said that Belmadi wanted both to “sport a respectable style without frills” and “a look that reflects the traditions and customs of Algerian society,” after they arrived with bleached blond locks

Frankly, the whole scenario is a bit of a nonsense and reminiscent of the time Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted that he didn’t sign a player simply because he had a mohican haircut.

MORE: Serious blow for Liverpool

Clearly, there needs to be respect between manager and players, however, making a player dye their hair isn’t going to make them play any better.

Moreover, it could drive an unnecessary wedge in the relationship which, internationally speaking, could have a detrimental effect.

On this occasion both Mahrez and Benrahma acceded to their manager’s wishes in any event.

Cherokee football preview, 2021: Boria expected to lead young, but talented Chiefs

Division: WJFL Continental

Division opponents: Eastern; Kingsway; Rancocas Valley; St. Joseph (Hamm.); Washington Township

Key players: Brandon Boria, RB, Jr.; Aiden Geisenheimer, OL, Sr.; Mike Muckenstrum, LB, Sr.; Bill Westerby, DL/LB, Sr.; Tom Nigro, DL, Sr.; Dom DeChurch, DL, Jr.; Antonio Campbell, DB, Sr.; Tyler Kellenberger, WR, Sr.; Ayden Nelson, LB, Sr.; Holden Wolfort, WR, Sr.; Sean Cole, RB/S, Jr.; Roman Dougherty, LB, Jr.; Jake Ellis, OL, Jr.; Brian Mitchell, DB, Jr.; Tom Pajic, WR, So.; Cam Burti, WR, Jr.; Ryan Bender, QB, So.

Outlook: The Chiefs lost several key players to graduation but return a talented young group looking to compete for a division title and make another postseason run.

They lost their final two games of last season by a combined four points – a three-point overtime setback to district rival Lenape in the WJFL Pod A semifinals and a one-point loss to Non-Public power St. Joseph (Mont.). Those setbacks will surely motivate this team as it navigates what looks to be a highly competitive regular-season schedule.

Cherokee will feature one of the state’s top returning running backs in Brandon Boria, who rushed for 888 yards and 11 touchdowns in six games. He collected a career-high 267 rushing yards on 35 carries along with two touchdown runs, a 3-yarder and a blistering 82-yard jaunt, in a loss to district rival Lenape.

Expect this group to be strong along the lines and complete on a weekly basis. There’s no reason why Cherokee can’t be in the conversation for division honors and a postseason berth.

2021 schedule:

Sept. 2: Lenape

Sept. 10: St. Joseph (Hamm.)

Sept. 24: Washington Township

Oct. 1: at Eastern

Oct. 8: Shawnee

Oct. 16: at Rancocas Valley

Oct. 22: Kingsway

TBA: Seneca

Distasio Scoreboard Dedication Ceremony Moved on September 17th

Nanticoke — The new scoreboard dedication ceremony to commemorate former coach Dandy Stacio has been postponed until September 17 due to electrical problems with the football field.

Distasio died in 2006 at the age of 73.

The late coach’s son, Dan Distacio, said the money donated to the scoreboard was raised through the 13-year Daniel Distacio Memorial Golf Tournament in honor of the coach.

“The funds were used to award scholarships to worthy students in Nanticoke and Crestwood,” said Vistasio. “Over the years, we have been awarded over $ 60,000 in scholarships, after which it was decided that the rest of the money would be donated to Nanticoke, which he remembers.”

After discussions with school officials, Vistasio said the school needed a scoreboard upgrade and the funds were donated to the school.

“The final decision to donate was made by our family, but it is important to understand that donations were made possible only by the generosity, effort and support of many of our friends over the years.” Distasio said. “Without the support of many people, we wouldn’t have been able to donate.”

The Distasio family wanted to clarify the donation process.

Coach Distasio served in the Navy for two years and in the Marine Corps for two years. After earning a bachelor’s degree from King’s College, he continued to earn the same qualifications as a master’s degree.

Distasio has been a teacher at Nanticoke High School for 33 years and a former football coach for 12 years. He also coached women’s volleyball, truck and Wilkes linebackers.

Distasio graduated from Nanticoke High School in 1950, where he played quarterbacks and basketball on a soccer team.

Connecticut’s Sports Betting Competition Is Heating Up

As legal sports betting is at the doorstep in Connecticut and is set to debut next month, the market will no longer be a duopoly in which the Mohegan and Mashantucket Pequot tribes control the market. The competition will now be three-way, as the Connecticut Lottery Corp. will be another major player. This quasi-public agency was authorized to operate in as many as 15 retail sportsbook locations around Connecticut.

The Lottery Will Offer Sports Betting in Numerous Locations

The lottery will provide visitors with sportsbook services at ten of the 11 Sportech brick-and-mortar facilities. Some of the properties that are included are Bobby V’s restaurant at the Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks, as well as its Stamford location. Sports Haven in New Haven and seven Winners locations in the state will also see sportsbooks.

Furthermore, Hartford and Bridgeport are two of the total of 15 venues where the lottery must set up shop, and none of them is allowed to be in the vicinity of Mohegan or Mashantucket reservations. That vicinity is 25 miles.

The no-compete zones were actually a small price that the lottery had to pay in order for tribes not to demand exclusive rights to sports betting in the state of Connecticut and that started the process of negotiating a deal between the Mohegans, the Mashantuckets, and Gov. Ned Lamont concerning landmark gaming expansion.

Rodney Butler, the chairman of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, stated that this deal was major during a Friday interview and acknowledged the fact that Rush Street Interactive and the lottery will be fierce competitors on the market.

Land-Based Sports Betting Will be The Lottery’s Advantage

Connecticut Lottery Corp.’s contributions have gone beyond the payments that casinos make for slot revenue in each fiscal year so far, starting from 2012-2013. The corporation…
