Increasing Food Security in a Mohican Tribal Community

Like many rural communities, the Stockbridge-Munsee Community, a Mohican Indian tribe in north central Wisconsin, wanted to increase its access to fresh produce, but faced multiple barriers. The tribe’s 500 acres of farmland was depleted of nutrients and organic matter after years of improper management by previous tenants.

Adapted from an article first published on the SARE website.

Additionally, local gardeners and farmers lacked an understanding of the soil management practices that would improve fertility, such as taking and interpreting soil tests, making compost and using cover crops. Also, some community members were reluctant to grow produce because of the labor required to control weeds. Community members also lacked skills to extend growing seasons and safely preserve their harvests.

Stockbridge-Munsee Community agriculture agent Kellie Zahn had a vision for addressing those needs but needed financial support to translate her vision into reality.

That’s where Sustainable Agriculture Research Education (SARE) came into the picture. Funded by USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA), SARE offers grants to farmers, ranchers, educators, researchers, graduate students and others for on-farm research, education, and professional and community development.

“One of the unique facets of SARE is that it offers grant opportunities to such a diverse applicant pool,” said NIFA National Program Leader Vance Owens. “SARE’s work is truly grassroots-driven and guided by regional SARE priorities. The beauty of a regionally directed program means that they can focus programs that are tailored to the needs of the communities and the region’s climate and environmental conditions.”

Actions Taken

Funded by two SARE grants, new farmers as well existing farmers received hands-on training to improve the tribe’s ability to grow fresh produce.

“We had a number of people reach out wanting to grow vegetables for the first time or for the first time in a…

Big day for Burke, Allard, and Bongiorno at The Downs

WILKES BARRE, PA – Harness racing trainer Ron Burke and driver Simon Allard made for a successful pairing on the Saturday afternoon card at The Downs at Mohegan Sun Pocono, winning the feature pace and also combining to post the quickest trotting time of the year.

Trainer Ron Burke

Ultimaroca (Rockin Image) has now won half of his eight seasonal starts after taking the $17,500 pacing feature in a lifetime best 1:49.4.

The gelding went to the quarter in :26.3, briefly yielded to Lets Roll then retook the top before the blistering :53.4 half, went on to a 1:21.4 three-quarters, then still had enough to roll home in :28 four lengths superior to first-over favorite Straight Up Cool.

Allard guided the winner, making only his second start in almost three months, for trainer Burke and the ownership of Burke Racing Stable LLC, Weaver Bruscemi LLC, and Phil Collura.

ULTIMAROCA REPLAY

The fastest trotting mile of 2022 at Pocono, 1:52.1, was turned in by the Explosive Matter four-year-old gelding Storm Is Raging, who is now three-for-three since coming under Burke’s care.

Allowed to escape at 12-1 while jumping several classes, sharp form trumped “class” here as Allard tucked third early, then rushed the developing diamondgaiter to the lead heading to the three-quarters and stormed home in 28.1 to leave heavy favorite Third Shift 3 1/2 lengths in his wake.

The vastly improved horse is co-owned by Carl Cocciolone, Mark Sosovicka, and Jack Piatt III.

STORM IS RAGING REPLAY

Storm Is Raging set his standard in an undercard event; the $17,500 featured trot went to Rich And Miserable, a winner of $621,589 who rallied from behind a fast pace to tally in 1:52.3, a half-length ahead of…

UN praises Iraq’s efforts to support refugees in Al-Hol camp in Syria

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – A high-level United Nations delegation, accompanied by the Chief of Iraq’s National Security Service, visited Al-Hol camp in north-eastern Syria, where they witnessed the horrible conditions of the miserable and sprawling complex of tents in the burning sun, which is the home of thousands of people for many years, according to a press statement issued by the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).

“Many people, particularly children, never asked to be part of this desperate situation with no end in sight. However, 50 percent of Al-Hol’s total population (currently about 56,000 individuals) is under the age of 12. They find themselves deprived of their rights, vulnerable and marginalized,” the Spokesperson of UNAMI, Samir Ghattas, explained in a press statement.

“A camp like Al-Hol fuels resentment and inspires terrorists, from breakout operations to large-scale attacks. If left unaddressed, the situation will inevitably impact the region and far beyond,” Ghattas elaborated.

“Keeping people in restricted and poor conditions ultimately creates greater protection and security risks than taking them back in a controlled manner,” the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, said.

“Iraq is demonstrating that responsible repatriations are possible, by finding dignified solutions anchored in the principles of both accountability and reintegration. The best and only durable solution is to control the situation, managing returns swiftly and decisively, in the spirit of partnership,” Hennis-Plasschaert added.

“Al-Hol is no place for children. The steps taken by the Government of Iraq are extremely important in the path to solutions. Action by other Member States with citizens in the camp is urgently needed.” the UN Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator for Syria, Imran Riza, mentioned in the UNAMI press statement.

“With the latest transfer on 1 June, over 2,500 Iraqis have been repatriated. But as thousands…

Mohican Adventure Hunt to return to Loudonville

The Cleo Redd Fisher Museum. | facebook.com

LOUDONVILLE – The Mohican Adventure Hunt is slated to kick off on Saturday, June 11, at the Cleo Redd Fisher Museum in Loudonville.

The adventure hunt is a hybrid scavenger hunt that sends teams racing across the Mohican area to discover landmarks, find rare items and complete unusual – and often hilarious – tasks.

“It’s a bit like a mixture of a traditional  scavenger hunt and ‘The Amazing Race,’” said the museum’s curator, Kenny Libben. Each landmark, find or task is assigned a point value and teams must submit photographs or videos to prove they completed it. The first team to complete all tasks, or the team with the most points at the deadline, wins.

The hunt was first held last year with over 50 participants competing for the cash prize and bragging rights. Though no team completed the entire list last year, Team Atterholt took home the top prize by narrowly edging out others with 49 completed tasks.

“We weren’t quite sure how well the tasks would be received,” said Libben, “but by the end of the event it was obvious everyone loved it and begged us to bring it back.”

This year, the first-place team will win a $125 cash prize, and second place will go home with a $50 cash prize. The cost to register is $40 per team (vehicle), with a discounted registration for members of the museum. The event kicks off at 10 a.m., and teams have three hours to complete their list of tasks – after which everyone is encouraged to return to the museum to find out how they stacked up against the competition. There are 50 challenges on the list of  tasks, but what they are won’t be revealed until the starting bell rings for…

Visit to Al-Hol camp in northeastern Syria [EN/AR/KU]

Attachments

On Sunday 5 June, a high-level UN delegation, accompanied by the Chief of Iraq’s National Security Service, visited Al-Hol camp in northeastern Syria: a desolate, sprawling complex of tents in the scorching sun, and the forced home of tens of thousands of people for many years now. The delegation witnessed first-hand the dire conditions on the ground. This was just a glimpse of the immense challenges Al-Hol residents endure on a daily basis – despite the best efforts of humanitarian actors.

Many people, in particular children, never asked to be part of this desperate situation with no end in sight. However, 50 percent of Al-Hol’s total population (currently about 56,000 individuals) is under the age of 12. They find themselves deprived of their rights, vulnerable and marginalized. The already extremely precarious humanitarian and security conditions have deteriorated further in past months, making the risks associated with this slow-moving catastrophe ever clearer: a camp like Al-Hol fuels resentment and inspires terrorists, from breakout operations to large-scale attacks. If left unaddressed, the situation will inevitably impact the region and far beyond.

The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert: “Keeping people in restricted and poor conditions ultimately creates greater protection and security risks than taking them back in a controlled manner. Iraq is demonstrating that responsible repatriations are possible, by finding dignified solutions anchored in the principles of both accountability and reintegration. The best and only durable solution is to control the situation, managing returns swiftly and decisively, in the spirit of partnership, to prevent the legacy of yesterday’s fight from fueling tomorrow’s conflict.”

The UN Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator for Syria, Imran Riza: “Al-Hol is no place for children. The steps taken by the Government of Iraq are extremely important in the path to solutions….
