The Yorktown Parks and Recreation Commission last week unanimously approved a short hiking trail in Mohegan Lake on town-owned parkland. The one-mile proposed trail has been named Tall Timber Park, occupying the former 1940-70 site of the Tall Timber summer camp and bungalow colony. The park is bordered by Scofield Road on the south, Ivy Road on the east, Crossways Road on the north, and Heyward Street on the West.

The Tall Timber Park trail was proposed last spring by the Tall Timber Park Committee, a volunteer group of Mohegan Lake residents who have marked and mapped out the trail and who will clear a path through brush and fallen trees and mark the final trail.

The proposal has met with strong opposition since July when residents on Ivy and Crossways Roads claimed the trail was a security threat because it ran too close to their homes. A Parks and Recreation Commission public meeting in July became openly contentious with demands for the trail to be either eliminated or severely shortened. Responding to those concerns, the Tall Timber Park Committee cut out the Crossways Road trail entrance and moved the proposed trail route further away from both Crossways and Ivy Roads.

The Tall Timber Park committee has since revised the trail five times in response to nearby residents. Each revision pinched in the trail’s loop moving it as far to the center of the park and away from any homes. Many neighbors then requested the trail be one path where hikers would walk up and back. Questions were raised by those opposing the trail about advertising the trail on websites and in trail publications.

Nanticoke Area jumped to a 15-point lead in the first quarter on the way to a 54-38 victory over visiting North Pocono in high school girls basketball Monday night.

Claire Aufiero led Nanticoke Area with 16 points. Brooklyn Biehl and Riley Baird each netted 11. Shaylee Heffron scored nine.

Abby Lenchinsky paced North Pocono with 12.

Northwest 29, Wyoming Seminary 26

Charleigh Miner scored 17 points as Northwest edged Wyoming Seminary.

Residents of Chippewas of the Thames First Nation, as well as Munsee-Delaware Nation, are being asked to boil their water after it was deemed unsafe to drink.

A precautionary boil water advisory was issued at 4 p.m. Wednesday and officials are also asking residents to conserve their water usage while the advisory is in effect.

“Any water being used for cooking, drinking, brushing teeth, making beverages, washing babies, and washing fruit and vegetables should be boiled for one minute and cooled before use,” the advisory stated.

“If anyone in your household drinks the water and becomes ill — seek medical care as soon as possible.”

Tame Impala will embark on a headlining tour of North America next spring in continued support of The Slow Rush. The tour features a few scattered festival dates, but runs officially from March 7 when it kicks off in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to March 23 when it wraps in Nashville, Tennessee.

Tickets for the March 2022 arena shows go on sale on Dec. 10 at 10 a.m. local time. The tour features stops in Toronto, Brooklyn, Boston, Hampton, Asheville, and more.

The tour announcement arrives with a new song, “No Choice”. The previously unreleased track was pulled from the forthcoming The Slow Rush deluxe box set, arriving Feb. 18 via Interscope. The set includes B-sides, like “The Boat I Row,” and remixes of the Grammy-nominated 2020 album, including the pre-album single “Patience” in its original and remixed form, and remixes of The Slow Rush.

“Being a personality onstage, that’s something I’ve been growing into,” Kevin Parker told Rolling Stone in 2019. “Saying fuck it and being that person who can rile up the audience. That’s someone I never saw myself as.”

Playing the guitar, singing the blues, or writing songs has been a daily ritual for the past 30 years for Lenape musician Brock Stonefish of Moraviantown in southwestern Ontario.

“It saved my life,” said Stonefish.

“When I was about 13 years old, I attempted suicide. That was right around the time when I started playing guitar and it brought me back.”

Stonefish’s music has taken him across the globe, performing as a solo artist, opening for B.B. King, and touring the United States with Gary Farmer and the Troublemakers.

Now Stonefish is organizing his second Indigenous Youth Guitar Giveaway. He said it’s a way to give back, to help First Nations, Métis or Inuit youth that are struggling.

“I just want to provide that avenue for Indigenous youth, that I know that have the same problems I did when I was young on my journey through life.”

Damien Kiyoshk, 22, from Walpole Island is one of two recipients to receive a guitar from the first guitar giveaway that was organized last July. He’s been playing for two years and is an aspiring blues player.

“I was super appreciative,” he said.

“I had one previously, but it got kind of wrecked and wasn’t as good as the one that I got from Brock.”

Giving away guitars is not new to Stonefish.

“I had a guitar that I took with me when I opened for B.B. King; I gave it away to a 13-year-old about 10 years ago,” he said.

“It was a hollow body arch top guitar and I’ve given away banjos and a lot of guitars have been given to me.”

Opportunity to change a life

Stonefish has many supporters for his project, including Arne Vainio, a Native American physician from Duluth, Minn., who donated to the first project.

“He could totally change someone’s life,” said Vainio.
