‘The best coach I ever had’, Sarasota youth football legend John Patella dies at 94

John Patella, who died at 94 on Tuesday, coached youth football for the Ringling Redskins for 41 years, winning 13 league titles

SARASOTA — John Patella was sure the play would work. His Ringling Redskin Mohican teams never threw the football much anyway, perhaps 1-2 passes a game, so his opponent for this contest, 4-0 Seneca, never would expect a pass from an undersized and unknown running back.

“He saw something in me that he thought was really special and took a chance on me,” said Brian Ryals, then a 12-year-old. The man known simply as “Coach” had drafted Ryals from Ringling’s Braves division. In the mid-1980s, a third division, for players ages 12-13, was formed for several years to fit in between the Braves and Warriors.

Patella, leaving the Mohicans to coach this new entry, named Mescalaro, selected Ryals in the draft. The featured runner on his former team, Ryals had to prove to Patella he was ready and deserving of a big chance.

The game against Seneca was it. “It was the showdown game,” said Ryals, the former head coach at Sarasota High and current quarterbacks coach at Venice High. Also 4-0, the Mohicans were tied with Seneca when Patella unveiled a play designed specifically for Ryals.

Taking the snap from center, the Mohican quarterback tossed the ball to Ryals, who faked a run before pulling up and throwing a pass to an open receiver. He ran it in for the touchdown which put the Mohicans in front for good.

They won the game, and finishing the season 10-0, also captured the league title, one of 13 during Patella’s 41 years as Mohican head coach. During a three-year span, his teams went 36-0.

Ryals doesn’t remember the quarterback who tossed him the ball, or the receiver who caught it. What he remembers is the coach who…

Stockbridge-Munsee Historic Preservation Manager oversees repatriation of ancestral artifacts from Berkshire Museum

In a classroom on the museum’s second floor, Bonney Hartley whispered a quiet prayer over a box containing an ornate pair of beaded, orange and green moccasins and a wampum bag while sprinkling tobacco and cedar over them from a ceremonial pouch.

“Cedar is for protection,” she explained.
“Tobacco is our way of offering prayers. When I take them back to our office, I’ll also light a sage and smudge them. But we just want to cleanse them off and welcome them back home and let them know that what’s happening to them, that they’re returning from here to go back to our community.”

20220211_120532.jpg The 17th century moccasins and wampum bag.

Hartley’s name in Munsee is Taheekwundoheet, which means “she has her arms around the People.” She’s the Tribal Historic Preservation Manager of the Stockbridge-Munsee Community, working out of a Williamstown office. She focuses on preserving the community’s cultural landmarks, overseeing the return ancestral artifacts and remains from colonial institutions.

The community lived in a vast stretch of the Northeast for centuries before the arrival of European colonists in the 1600s, and were officially recognized as the Stockbridge-Munsee while centered in that Berkshire community in the 1700s.

“Our ancestors fought really valiantly in the Revolutionary War on the side of the new colonial America,” said Hartley. “And for those that did return to the town of Stockbridge, many people’s land had been taken by the Williams family, really notably, and others, and others obviously lost their lives in the war. And so our tribe was diminished, and actually not really seen as having a lot of value or use at that point for our strengths around diplomacy, for example, and working among other tribes during the Revolutionary War.”

PennDOT to Begin Rehabilitation on Swamp Creek Road Bridge over Unami Creek in Marlborough Township

King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that construction is scheduled to begin on Monday, February 14, to rehabilitate the Swamp Creek Road bridge over Unami Creek in Marlborough Township, Montgomery County.

PennDOT’s contractor will repair the structure’s foundation at the pier and near abutment to prevent future scouring. The three-span stone masonry arch bridge was closed in late December 2021 after undermining of the bridge pier was discovered during an underwater bridge inspection.

Since the closure, motorists have been directed to use Geryville Pike, Route 63 (Sumneytown Pike), Route 563 (Ridge Road), and Whites Mill Road. The closure will remain in place until late March.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling near the work area because backups and delays will occur. The schedule is weather dependent.

Before the recent December closure, the Swamp Creek Road bridge was initially closed in September 2021 to repair the approach roadway due to damaged caused by Tropical Storm Ida. Approximately 203 vehicles travel across the 130-year-old, 89-foot-long, 20-foot-wide structure daily.

Motorists can check conditions on more than 40,000 roadway miles, including color-coded winter conditions on 2,900 miles, by visiting www.511PA.com. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information and access to more than 1,000 traffic cameras.

Norfolk hospital doctor raising funds for those left behind by suicide

Published: 2:51 PM February 9, 2022

Updated: 3:05 PM February 9, 2022

A doctor has relaunched a haircut challenge to raise money for those left behind by suicide.

Dr Ben Fox, an anaesthetist at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King’s Lynn, shaved a ‘nohican’ stripe through his hair last February after a colleague took his own life.

The consultant anaesthetist hoped to highlight the need for more openness surrounding the topic of mental health and suicide, especially for men and people working in the medical profession who do not always find it easy to talk about the stresses they are under.

He also raised more than £2,500 for a mental health support charity.

“Sadly another friend died from suicide last year and that prompted the next phase if you like,” said Dr Fox, 40, who lives in Castle Acre, near Swaffham.

“I changed the hairstyle, if you like, to make it easier for other people to join in.”

Dr Fox said funds raised from this year’s challenge would be donated to the charity Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide.

“This year, we thought we would do it for the people left behind by suicide,” he added.

The charity provides a safe and confidential environment in which bereaved people can share their experiences and…
