Indigenous Solidary Immersion Trip offers new perspective for Marquette students, faculty and staff

A group of 10 undergraduate students and five staff and faculty members from Marquette underwent a profound and transformative experience on the three-day “Indigenous Solidary Immersion Trip,” in April. Sponsored and planned by Marquette’s Center for Peacemaking and co-led by the Marquette Indigeneity Lab, this journey took this group to the Stockbridge-Munsee Nation in northeast Wisconsin. The trip was ably and generously hosted and led by Stockbridge-Munsee elder and Marquette alumna Jo Ann Schedler

Participants visit the Keek-Och Tribal Farm.

The focus of the trip was to educate students on-site about the history, culture and current projects of the Stockbridge-Munsee Nation. An early highlight was being welcomed to the tribal headquarters and speaking to tribal officials about their operations, sovereignty, government-to-government relations, treaties and more. Another highlight was the Keek-Och (“From the Earth”) Tribal Farm, a nation-owned farm that seeks to advance the Stockbridge-Munsee’s food sovereignty and preserve traditional farming practices and foods.

Participants also took part in a walking tour at Many Trails Park with Misty Cook, an expert in Indigenous medicines, who taught the group about various plant- and tree-based medicines that could be gathered in the park. Other stops included the Arvid Miller Library and Museum, the Mohican Veterans Center, the Eunice Stick Gathering Place, the Health & Wellness Center and the New Elderly Center.

The Lutheran Indian Mission Boarding School, located in Gresham, Wisconsin.

Toward the end of the trip, we visited the Lutheran Indian Mission Boarding School, a sobering and reflective stop as we contemplated the sad legacy of such schools, including the cultural, psychological and physical damage inflicted by Christians upon the local Indigenous peoples.

The journey began to conclude with a…

Newton Braves vs. Lenape Valley Patriots

Suggested Video

The Newton Braves are taking a road trip to take on the Lenape Valley Patriots at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Newton will be strutting in after a victory while Lenape Valley will be coming in after a defeat.

The home team had won the previous four meetings between Newton and Wallkill Valley, and Newton kept the tradition alive. The Braves’ pitcher stepped up to hand the Rangers a 4-0 shutout on Wednesday.

Jaida Long

05/07/25 vs Wallkill Valley 16
05/01/25 vs Morristown-Beard 16
04/28/25 vs Parsippany 9
04/24/25 vs North Warren Regional 11
04/22/25 vs Hackettstown 13
+ 6 more games

Not much got past Jaida Long, who gave up just two hits and racked up 16 Ks to keep Wallkill Valley off the board. Long has been consistent for a while: she hasn’t tossed less than six strikeouts any time she’s pitched this season.

On the hitting side, Newton saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Isabella Rubino, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI. That’s the most RBI Rubino has posted since back in April.

Meanwhile, after soaring to 11 runs the game before, Lenape Valley was a bit more limited in their game on Wednesday. They lost 11-1 to Vernon. The Patriots have struggled against the Vikings recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive lost meeting.

Lenape Valley’s loss dropped their record down to 2-12. As for Newton, their win ended a four-game drought at home and bumped them up to 8-9.

Newton might still be hurting after the 11-1 defeat they got from Lenape Valley when the teams last played back in April of 2024. Can the Braves avenge their loss or…

Nine In A Row For Chapolier At Pocono

Chapolier has now won every one of his nine 2025 starts at Pocono Downs at Mohegan Pennsylvania, making a hard trip from the outside post eight look easy as he scored in 1:54.3 over a track rated sloppy on Tuesday, May 6.

Tyler Buter, the track’s leading driver, saw the many of the usual prospective opportunists leaving quickly inside him and settled the Chapter Seven gelding in fourth as Macmorris Hanover, favoured in last week’s Game Of Claims Championship but this week 21-1 from post seven, hustled to the top in :27.4, then got a breather to the :57.4 half, at which point Chapolier and Buter went into grinding mode. The pair kept drawing closer and closer to the leader while covering his own third quarter in :27.3, reaching the three-quarters just a neck behind as the timer flashed in 1:26.1, with In My Dreams pocket-sitting and hoping for some luck.

Buter continued feeding his horse racetrack and Chapolier just kept gobbling it up, narrowing the margin to a head at the stretch call and then drawing off by 2-3/4 lengths seemingly effortlessly, with In My Dreams another length back in third. All of the first three finishers were claimed out of the feature, for a total outlay for the trio of $85,000 USD.

Chapolier has now been claimed seven times (total sum $198,000 USD) during his winning streak, showing amazing adaptability to constantly-changing surroundings (five different trainers in all). Three times he has been haltered and then raced by P T Stable and trainer Chris Oakes. Chapolier now goes back to owner Rocco Stebbins, from whom P T / Oakes took him in his previous start; the horse has earned over $90,000 in purses between Feb. 17 and May 6 at Pocono.

Buter also won the day’s…

Judge denies bail for teen suspect in Nanticoke drive-by shooting

May 7—WILKES-BARRE — As fast as Attorney Ellen M. Granahan requested bail be set for her teenage client, James Alberto Jr., Luzerne County Judge Michael T. Vough quickly denied.

Alberto Jr., 17, was before Vough on Wednesday for his monthly review hearing as he is jailed in an adult prison, the Luzerne County Correctional Facility, while facing charges he shot a 14-year-old boy in a drive-by shooting in Nanticoke nearly two years ago.

“Everything going good? Going to classes, getting outside, taking showers?” Vough asked.

“Yes, sir,” Alberto said.

The issue of Alberto not able to take showers was an issue in March as the county prison was routinely on lockdown that month.

Alberto is to remain jailed at the county prison as Assistant District Attorney Julian Truskowski said there remains no room at five juvenile detention centers in Pennsylvania and no space at a juvenile detention facility in Ohio.

Before Alberto is scheduled for trial on charges of criminal attempt to commit criminal homicide, aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, arson, reckless burning, receiving stolen property and possessing a firearm by a minor, Vough is to entertain arguments by Granahan to transfer the case to juvenile court.

Alberto, then 16, was charged by the Pennsylvania State Police at Wilkes-Barre for the drive-by shooting in the area of West Green and Maple streets, Nanticoke, on July 21, 2023. A 14-year-old boy suffered wounds to his head and ankle.

Alberto was a passenger in a stolen Hyundai when he leaned out the window and allegedly fired multiple shots at the teenage boy.

The driver of the Hyundai, John Carl Pearce IV., 18, pled guilty to criminal conspiracy to commit aggravated assault, arson, theft and criminal conspiracy to commit access device fraud, and was sentenced to five-to-10 years in state prison.

After the shooting, Alberto and Pearce stole a 2013 Ford F150 truck from…

NY weather update: Expect damaging winds and quarter-sized hail with thunderstorms in New York Tuesday

On Tuesday at 4:12 p.m. the National Weather Service issued an updated severe thunderstorm warning in effect until 4:30 p.m. for Broome, Cortland and Tioga counties.

The storms could bring quarter-sized hail (1 inch) and wind gusts of up to 60 mph.

“At 4:12 p.m., a severe thunderstorm was located near Richford, or 7 miles southwest of Marathon, moving north at 25 mph,” according to the weather service. “Hail damage to vehicles is expected. Expect wind damage to roofs, siding, and trees.”

Locations impacted by the warning include Virgil, Marathon, Lapeer, Hunts Corners and Center Lisle.

The weather service states, “For your protection move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building.”

Staying safe as lightning approaches: Expert advice

Each year, lightning strikes the United States approximately 25 million times, with the majority of these electrifying events occurring during the summer months. Unfortunately, lightning is responsible for claiming the lives of approximately 20 people annually, as reported by the weather service. The threat of lightning becomes more pronounced as thunderstorms draw nearer, peaking when the storm is directly overhead and gradually waning as it moves away.

To ensure your safety during a thunderstorm, keep these recommendations in mind:

Lightning safety plan:

  • When venturing outdoors, it’s vital to establish a clear plan for seeking shelter in case of lightning.
  • Monitor the sky for threatening signs and listen for the sound of thunder. If thunder is audible, it’s an indication that lightning is nearby.
  • Seek a safe place to shelter, preferably indoors.

Indoors safety measures:

  • Once you’ve found shelter indoors, abstain from using corded phones, electrical appliances, or plumbing fixtures, and refrain from approaching windows and doors.
  • These precautions help reduce the risk of electrical surges, as lightning can follow conductive pathways.

Wait for the all-clear:

  • After the last lightning strike or thunderclap, wait at least 30 minutes before resuming…
