LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas men’s basketball will be participating in Native American Heritage Celebration culminating Saturday, Dec. 18 for the Stephen F. Austin game set for 7 p.m. inside Allen Fieldhouse.
This is the second Native American Heritage Celebration of the 2021-22 season as KU women’s basketball recognized and honored Native Americans at its Nov. 14 game against Tennessee State in Allen Fieldhouse.
The upcoming event will honor past and current Native American Jayhawks. Activities began, on Monday, Dec. 13, when KU men’s basketball assistant coach Jeremy Case was presented with a Star Quilt by the Native American community prior to practice. Case, who played basketball at Kansas from 2004-08, is a member of the Choctaw Tribe. Case’s mother, Rita Newton, and son, Malachi, were also present for the Star Quilt ceremony that included Native American representation from University of Kansas, Haskell Indian Nations University and local leaders. Case and head coach Bill Self each received handmade Jayhawk medallions during the ceremony.
For the Stephen F. Austin at Kansas Game:
- The Haskell Indian Nations University Color Guard will present the colors for the national anthem.
- There will be a canned food drive with proceeds going to organizations that host food distribution programs for the Native American Community in Lawrence, reservations in Kansas, as well as students of Haskell Indian Nations University. Organizations that will benefit from this canned food drive will range from the Indian United Methodist Church of Lawrence, Kansas, Boys & Girls Club of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation, as well as the Kansas City Indian Center.
- There will be Native American tabling throughout Allen Fieldhouse to help educate fans on Native culture, traditions, etc.
- A special halftime presentation by Native American Powwow Dancers.

‘Meeting of the Mayors’ gets new member
Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney joined the monthly roundtable of mayors in our area.
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. — Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney is the newest addition to the monthly meeting of the mayors hosted by Wilkes-Barre Mayor George Brown.
“Just exchanging ideas and you know, get to learn something from everybody,” said Kenney. “We got the infrastructure bill that’s coming and it’s going to have to be some consensus on state projects, and the northeast has similar issues that we’re dealing with. So in addition to COVID, and some of the other things you have to deal with, it’s always nice to get out of the city for a little bit exchange ideas with other people.”
The other mayors besides Wilkes-Barre’s and Philadelphia’s at the table are the mayor of Hazleton, Nanticoke, Scranton, Kingston, Williamsport, and Pittston.
“For me, the size of the city, it’s really all about numbers, issues, whether it’s COVID or budgets or police, the issues are kind of the same,” said Pittston Mayor Michael Lombardo. “It’s just what the multiplicative factor is. So it’s great to be here and exchange ideas. It’s nice to expand a group a little bit and have some different insights that will be here.”
“We don’t know everything. I mean, we can always learn from somebody and they do things differently or better. We can take that and take it back home and implement it there,” added Kenney.
Philadelphia just announced a vaccine mandate for indoor dining and sporting events to start next year—something Mayor Kenney says he’s ready to discuss, but it’s not something mayors in our area are prepared to make a decision on.
“I don’t know much about it. And hopefully, we’ll learn more today about that,” said Wilkes-Barre Mayor George Brown about the topic.

CLARION, Pa. (EYT) – Clarion County Sheriff Rex Munsee always wanted to be a private detective, and he’ll get his wish in January when he leaves his post after three four-year terms as sheriff and becomes a private citizen.
As a young boy, Munsee built a lifelong appreciation for comic books, but his Number One hero was Batman, “the world’s greatest detective.” The deductive reasoning employed by Bruce Wayne’s alter ego and the adventures of Sherlock Holmes stuck with Munsee throughout his career.
The experiences he gained as a 27-year state police trooper and another 12 years as sheriff did not lessen his desire to be a detective, but they were good years for him.
“The second-best job I’ve ever had is Clarion County Sheriff, and the best job I’ve ever had is with the Pennsylvania State Police,” Munsee said.
A graduate of the state police academy in 1981, he was assigned to the Shippenville barracks of the PSP. As a native of Erie County, the assignment was a surprise, and he wasn’t quite sure where Shippenville was located. Twenty-seven years later, and he knew it was home.
Rex is also opening his new detective office in his daughter’s Munsee Law Office building on the corner of Liberty Street and Fifth Avenue in the shadow of the Clarion County Courthouse.
Cassandra started her own practice, Munsee Law LLC, and specializes in Family Law. She also practices Criminal Law and Personal Injury.
Asked if he encouraged his daughter to become a lawyer, Rex offered an enthusiastic “yes.”

This week, Tame Impala added 2022 tour dates to their schedule in conjunction with their latest album, 2020’s The Slow Rush. The newly announced shows will make stops at large-scale North American venues in March.
Before embarking on the headlining tour, Kevin Parker and his band will be performing slots at a couple of festivals. More festival appearances are scattered between a handful of European tour dates in August and September. Toward the end of the year, Tame Impala will be touring their home country of Australia in October.

Planes TWP. — “Elvis” is at a sold-out house in Mohegan San Pocono on Sunday.
The “Elvis Tribute Artist Spectacular” Holiday Show, starring the world-famous Shawn Klush and sponsored by Fabulous Ambassador, will be held in front of a sold-out audience on Sunday, December 12th at 3pm. Appears in Pocono.
Klush decorates the main stage of the Keystone Grand Ballroom with the best sound of the legendary “King of Rock and Roll”, Elvis Presley.
Called “the closest to the king at a concert,” Klush was born and raised in Pittston. Because of his love of music, he began to imitate the music idol Elvis Presley.
In a telephone interview on Tuesday, Klush said he had been doing his Elvis tribute show for 25 years and he still loves what he does. He traveled around the world and went to sold-out venues.
“And it’s all thanks to Elvis,” Klush said. “Elvis changed from rags to wealth overnight. It’s a complete American story. Elvis was born in the southern countryside, an only child (his brother died at birth), and he is complete. I was devoted to my mother. “
Klush said he always enjoys going home and playing in front of a local audience.
“And I’m grateful for the opportunity to do that and meet many of my fellow NEPA fans,” he said.
In 2016, Klush from Pittston played Elvis in HBO’s hit series “Vinyl.” He has appeared on the TV show “What We Do in the Shadows,” an FX vampire comedy starring Nick Kroll, famous for his big mice. As you can imagine, Klush plays Vampire Elvis. “
“It’s a great show-it’s a lot of fun to do,” he said.
Klush is still talking to Priscilla Presley and said he has received high praise from Graceland’s family and people.
