Iraq Returns More Looted Kuwaiti Property Three Decades After Invasion

KUWAIT CITY, Nov 3: In line with relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions, Kuwait on Monday received a new batch of national property that had been confiscated by the former Iraqi regime during its 1990 invasion of Kuwait.

The official handover took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters in the Diplomatic Quarter. The batch includes 400 boxes containing books and microfilm tapes belonging to Kuwait’s Ministry of Information, which were recently discovered in Iraq.

Speaking to the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) on the sidelines of the ceremony, Assistant Foreign Minister for International Organizations, Minister Plenipotentiary Abdulaziz Al-Jarallah, expressed Kuwait’s appreciation for the cooperative efforts that led to the recovery. He commended the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) for its positive and consistent role in supervising and organizing the process of returning Kuwaiti property.

Al-Jarallah reaffirmed Kuwait’s commitment to continued collaboration with Iraq and the United Nations to ensure the complete repatriation of all remaining Kuwaiti archives and assets that were seized during the occupation.

He also welcomed UN Security Council Resolution No. 2792, adopted on September 17, which calls for ongoing international engagement on the files concerning Kuwaiti prisoners and missing persons, third-country nationals, and national property — including the Kuwaiti national archives. Under the resolution, the UN Secretary-General will appoint a high-level representative to facilitate and support these ongoing efforts following the conclusion of UNAMI’s mandate.

Al-Jarallah emphasized Kuwait’s full support for the newly appointed UN representative, stressing Kuwait’s readiness to assist in fulfilling the tasks mandated by the Security Council. He also extended gratitude to Iraq for its cooperation in addressing the Kuwaiti property file, urging continued efforts to locate and recover all remaining items as stipulated under international resolutions.

For his part, Ambassador Dr. Mohammed Al-Hassan, Special Representative…

Democrats ride to victory in key Luzerne County races, proposed charter changes rejected

Democrats rode to victory in the race for Luzerne County Council Tuesday night, reclaiming the body’s majority, while voters handed the county controller’s office to another member of their party.

In a separate question, voters also rejected proposed changes to the county’s home rule charter.

“I think, it’s almost like a referendum, if you ask me, on what’s going on nationally,” said Democrat Denise Williams, who claimed the most votes in the council contest.

“The common denominator that I heard door-knocking across the board was people were very unhappy with what’s happening nationally,” Williams added.

Luzerne County Council race

The 11-member council had seven Republicans and four Democrats heading into the election, with five seats — all held by Republicans — up for grabs.

Democrats claimed four of the five openings in the countywide at-large race, according to unofficial results with all 186 precincts reporting:

  • Williams (D) — 38,280
  • John Lombardo (R) — 37,374
  • Steven Coslett (D) — 36,053
  • Chris Belles (D) — 35,986
  • Dawn Simmons (D) — 34,478

On the Republican side, incumbent councilmembers Brian Thornton (33,136 votes) and Greg Wolovich (31,872) appear to have failed in their efforts to win second terms.

Two other Republicans, Jackie Scarcella (33,852) and former councilman Stephen J. Urban (32,872), also failed in their bids to win seats.

Tony Perzia (31,973) was the only Democrat who did not win a seat.

“I’m really happy. I’m happy for everybody,” Williams said.

Lombardo was grateful for his reelection, but “extremely disappointed” in the overall outcome for his party.

Agedchedar Hanover Leads Series Splits At Pocono

With the number of days left in the 2025 racing season at Pocono Downs at Mohegan Pennsylvania down to single numbers, Director of Racing Rick Kane has devised a two-legs-and-a-Championship series for both trotters and pacers called the “Winter Is Coming” Series to create year-end extra excitement, and on Monday (Nov. 3) the pacers contested two $17,606 opening round prelims.

The excitement factor was evident in the faster of the day’s two Winter Is Coming cuts, as the Betterthancheddar gelding Agedchedar Hanover closed from third-over to win in a four-horse blanket finish in 1:52.4. The winner came home in :28.1 against the wind to defeat Points North by a head for trainer Jake Leamon and owner Dona McDonald.

The other section went to the only three-year-old to enter in the first leg prelim, the Cattlewash gelding Expedited Service, and the sophomore might turn out to be the horse to beat in the series. Though his mile was clocked in 1:54.3, Expedited Service went his third quarter in :26.4 with the wind to easily clear from first-over and drew off to a 4-1/2 length victory for driver George Napolitano Jr., trainer Richard Johnson, and owner Guy Gemore.

Top purse of the card was the $21,831 offered for developing trotters, with the stakes sophomore filly Margareta Hanover taking command in front of the stands the first time and then posting a new mark of 1:55.4 in winning by open distance. Mattias handled the Maharajah filly for trainer-brother Marcus (who was at the opening day of the Harrisburg Sale) and, appropriately given that reference, owners Hanover Shoe Farms Inc.

Anthony Napolitano led the driving colony with three winners; Braxten Boyd, meet leader Tyler Buter, James Kennedy, and George Napolitano Jr. each had two. “Anthony Nap” earned another distinction by…

Kuwait receives new batch of property from Iraq stolen during 1990 invasion

Kuwait today received a new shipment of property recently discovered in Iraq, in line with relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions, which had been stolen by the former Iraqi regime during its 1990 invasion of Kuwait.

Assistant Foreign Minister for International Organizations, Minister Plenipotentiary Abdulaziz Al-Jarallah, told KUNA at the handover ceremony at the Foreign Ministry headquarters in the Iraqi Diplomatic Quarter that the shipment includes 400 boxes containing books and microfilm recordings belonging to Kuwait’s Ministry of Information.

Al-Jarallah lauded the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) for its pivotal role in overseeing and facilitating the transfer of Kuwaiti property. He reaffirmed Kuwait’s commitment to continuing joint efforts to recover all remaining property and archives, reports Al-Jarida daily.

He also welcomed UN Security Council Resolution 2792, adopted on September 17, which calls for ongoing follow-up on Kuwaiti prisoners, missing persons, third-country nationals, and property — including the National Archives — following the conclusion of UNAMI’s mandate.

Al-Jarallah emphasized Kuwait’s support for the high-level UN representative tasked with completing these efforts and expressed appreciation for Iraq’s continued cooperation in returning Kuwaiti property in accordance with Security Council resolutions.

The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Head of UNAMI, Ambassador Dr. Mohammed Al-Hassan, described the handover as a momentous day for the future of Kuwaiti-Iraqi relations. He noted that the ceremony symbolizes the foundation for relations between neighboring countries built on mutual respect and cooperation.

Highlighting the significance of bilateral ties, Dr. Al-Hassan called this the beginning of a new phase of collaboration between the two nations, underlining the historic and friendly connections between the peoples of Kuwait and Iraq.

Iraqi Deputy Foreign Minister for Multilateral and Legal Affairs, Shorsh Saeed, told KUNA that this shipment is neither the first nor the last. He stressed Iraq’s determination to…

Respect ready to bounce back at Swindon

EAGLES RESPECT suffered a shock defeat to Sallowglen Hope at Swindon last week but can turn the tables when they clash again at 7.33 tonight, live on PGR.

Angie Kibble’s Produce champion took an early bump and ran out of track when trying to reel in John Campbell’s speedy wide, but is fancied to get there tonight in the feature 476m Blunsdon Standard.

The card also features two maidens over the four-bend trip. Both look fiercely competitive affairs, with votes going to Dalton Smith’s Mohican Lucy (6.42) and Darryl Porter’s Raparee Yulia (6.59).

A later D1 over  262m at 7.49 looks a good opportunity for Paul Foster’s Harlequin Dahy to resume winning ways.

Beaten in a Monmore open last time out, he can take his Swindon two-bend record to four wins from five starts with another powerful display.

FABULOUS HEKA suffered some costly defeats at Sheffield last month but can bounce back to winning ways at Suffolk Downs at 7.14 this evening, live on SIS.

Top handler Patrick Janssens sends a talented team of dogs to his local circuit on its reopening night and is expected to be among the winners, with his St Leger finalist a strong pick over 716m.

A moderate starter on her inside, in the shape of Michelle Brown’s Crafty Prospero, opens the door and she can take control by halfway.

Prolific kennelmate Yahoo Megan takes no finding in the first of the ten opens at the Mildenhall circuit at 6.04 and she can make all over 388m at short odds.

Kevin Boon’s Farneys Millie has the speed to cut loose in the 388m maiden at 6.21 and open her account at the fifth time of asking, while Jason Ray’s Savana Clowns drops back in trip to 548m at 6.56 but also drops in class and can prove too strong for her rivals in the…

NY weather: Thunderstorms with pea-sized hail in New York Monday – gusts as high as 50 mph

A report was issued from the National Weather Service on Monday at 9:08 p.m. for strong thunderstorms until 10 p.m. for Cayuga, Tompkins, Cortland, Chenango, Tioga and Broome counties.

The storms may bring wind gusts of up to 50 mph and pea-sized hail (0.25 inches).

“At 9:08 p.m., Doppler radar tracked a strong thunderstorm over South Cortland, or near Cortland, moving southeast at 40 mph,” comments the weather service. “Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Minor hail damage to vegetation is possible.”

Locations impacted by the alert include Cortland, Homer, Virgil, Groton, Locke, Genoa, Dryden, Ledyard, Nanticoke and Greene.

The weather service states, “If outdoors, consider seeking shelter inside a building.”

Preparing for impending lightning strikes: Expert safety recommendations

Each year, lightning strikes the United States approximately 25 million times, mostly during the summer. It claims the lives of about 20 people annually, according to the weather service. The threat of lightning becomes more pronounced as thunderstorms draw nearer, peaking when the storm is directly overhead and gradually waning as it moves away.

To guarantee your safety in the midst of a thunderstorm, take into account the following recommendations:

Lightning safety plan:

  • When venturing outdoors, it’s crucial to have a lightning safety plan in place.
  • Stay vigilant by monitoring the sky for ominous signs and listening for the telltale sound of thunder. If thunder is audible, it’s a clear indication of nearby lightning.
  • Seek a safe place to shelter, preferably indoors.

Indoors safety measures:

  • Once you’ve found shelter indoors, abstain from using corded phones, electrical appliances, or plumbing fixtures, and refrain from approaching windows and doors.
  • These precautions help reduce the risk of electrical surges, as lightning can follow conductive pathways.

Wait for the all-clear:

  • After the last lightning strike or thunderclap, wait at least 30 minutes before resuming outdoor activities.
  • Lightning can strike even when a storm…

‘The Canoe Capital Of Ohio’ Is A Historic Paddler’s Paradise On The Forested Emerald Green Mohican River

Nowadays, it can feel harder and harder to connect with nature. Many people are so busy with fast-paced, modern, and urban lives that they don’t know where to look for a spot of peaceful wilderness or wistful nostalgia for the America of days gone by. Well, one of the first places to look has to be Loudonville, Ohio — a charming, small village with a historical significance far greater than its size and a recreational canoeing tradition that dates back to 1961.

Loudonville is sandwiched between the mighty Mohican River and Ohio’s Amish Country in Holmes County, making it one of the most scenic and peaceful spots to unwind and marvel at Mother Nature in the state. There are five canoe liveries (rental services) in and around Loudonville, which make it so accessible to paddle that the village has become known as the Mohican Canoe Capital. This comes as no surprise, as Ohio’s first canoe rental service was established in Loudonville and is still operating today. Previously known as Mohican Canoe Livery, the company now operates as Mohican Adventures and is fully equipped with a campsite and cabins, canoe, kayak, raft, and tube rentals, a high wire course, a go-cart track, and a mini-golf course. Mohican Adventures is a testament to the village’s unique blend of history and wildlife that is calling to nature lovers everywhere.
