Report: Sun ownership hoping to ‘salvage’ sale

Sun ownership intends to “present multiple options to the WNBA” as it looks to “salvage what would have been a record-breaking” $325M franchise sale, according to sources. Sources said that the Mohegan tribe “is seeking clarity on the league’s desired path forward” for the team. Sources noted that among the Mohegan tribe’s “likely proposals” to the league are: a full franchise sale to Pagliuca’s group; a sale to a group headlined by Avenue Capital Group co-founder and CEO Marc Lasry, who would move the team to Hartford; selling a minority stake in the organization; and allowing the league to purchase the franchise for $325M and relocate it from the WNBA’s smallest market. A source close to the ownership group said that the tribe “is frustrated” and “feels the league is presenting a one-path option: relocation of the team to a market of its choosing at a value of its choosing.” Sources said that the league would “consider a potential Boston team in a later round of expansion,” and that new Celtics owner Bill Chisholm would “be the league’s preferred owner for a WNBA franchise” (ESPN.com, 8/19).

United Lenape/Lunáapeew Nations Pow Wow Returns to Brooklyn

The Pow Wow will take place on Saturday, Sept. 13 and Sunday, Sept. 14 at the LeFrak Center at Lakeside in Prospect Park.

The second United Lenape/Lunáapeew Nations Pow Wow will take place on Saturday, Sept. 13 and Sunday, Sept. 14 at the LeFrak Center at Lakeside in Prospect Park.

Join the nonprofit Prospect Park Alliance, Éenda-Lŭnaapeewáhkiing Collective, which brings together Lunáapeew/Lenape communities who have been displaced across Turtle Island (North America) and American Indian Community House, which promotes the well-being and visibility of the American Indian community, for a two-day public event that includes family friendly fun, culture, art and learning with Indigenous dancers, drummers, and artisan craft and food vendors.

Pow Wows are gatherings where Lenape/Lunáapeew and neighboring Indigenous nations socialize and celebrate life. Prospect Park hosted formal Pow Wows from 1916 to 1972. Reviving this tradition, the Lenape/Lunáapeew will celebrate their culture in their homelands and offers Brooklynites of all backgrounds the chance to enjoy the drumming, dancing, singing, art, crafts and foods of the original stewards of this land.

Lunáapeew/Lenape means human beings or, more specifically, “the ones who came from thought,” and is the name of the indigenous peoples whose ancestral homelands encompassed what is today Brooklyn and the surrounding region. Éenda-Lŭnaapeewáhkiing, “the land of the Lunáapeew,” holds the stories of a civilization rich with a deep understanding of the delicate balance and mutual relationships necessary to nurture and sustain a healthy world.

The Pow Wow is part of the ReImagine Lefferts initiative, which is transforming the Lefferts Historic House museum to explore the lives, resistance and resilience of the Indigenous people of Lenapehoking, whose unceded ancestral lands the park and house rests upon, and Africans who were enslaved by the Lefferts family.

Currently on view at Lefferts is Eelunaapéewi Ehaptoonáakanal: Voices of Lunáapeew/Lenape, an…

Connecticut Sun sale in limbo as new report claims WNBA now wants to buy team, and for less money

The ongoing saga of the Mohegan Tribe’s attempt to sell the Connecticut Sun took another turn on Tuesday when ESPN reported that the WNBA is attempting to counter the two offers currently on the table from prospective ownership groups in Boston and Hartford.

According to the ESPN report, the WNBA opposes a move to either city and made its own offer to purchase the team for $250 million without charging a relocation fee. Such a move would allow the league to then facilitate the sale to a preferred candidate.

The league put out a statement after news of the Boston agreement leaked, that said the nine cities who submitted bids during the league’s latest round of expansion “currently have priority over Boston” to receive a WNBA team. A WNBA spokesperson reiterated that sentiment in a statement to The Courant regarding Hartford’s attempt to purchase the Sun.

The Boston Globe first reported that the tribe was set to sell the franchise to a group led by former Boston Celtics minority governor Steve Pagliuca for $325 million, with an addition $100 million commitment to build the team a dedicated practice facility.

The tribe reportedly reached an agreement with the Boston group in July, and though the deal was presented to WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert, it was never brought before the Board of Governors, which must approve any deal.

After the period of exclusivity with Boston ran out, an investment group led by former Milwaukee Bucks co-owner Marc Lasry made its own $325 million bid to keep the team in Connecticut and move its home to PeoplesBank Arena in downtown Hartford. A source familiar with negotiations told the Courant in early August that they were not aware of any serious offers being considered outside of those…

Iraq on World Humanitarian Day: From Canal Hotel attack to climate-driven displacement

Shafaq News

World Humanitarian Day (WHD) is marked each year on August 19 in honor of aid workers and people affected by crises. The date was chosen after the 2003 bombing of the United Nations headquarters at Baghdad’s Canal Hotel, which killed 22 staff members, including Special Representative Sergio Vieira de Mello.

More than two decades later, Iraq stands at a transitional stage—no longer an international emergency, but still facing protracted displacement, explosive hazards, and climate-related challenges that require sustained assistance.

From Conflict Response to Transition

Iraq’s humanitarian profile has changed sharply since the defeat of ISIS. Emergency needs have decreased, and the government is gradually resuming full responsibility. The UN Security Council this year extended the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) for a final term until December 31, 2025, marking a shift from international political oversight toward nationally led stabilization and services.

“The United Nations will continue supporting Iraq even after the mandate of UNAMI concludes at the end of 2025,” UN representative Mohamed al-Hassan said on Tuesday.

While UNAMI’s political mission winds down, UN agencies will continue their development and humanitarian programs. The Canal Hotel attack, which gave rise to WHD, also reshaped global security standards for aid operations, making Iraq central to how the UN manages risks in complex environments.

Smaller Emergencies, Persistent Risks

According to UNHCR, Iraq still hosts about 1.03 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) and more than 340,000 refugees and asylum seekers, mostly in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI). Around 109,000 IDPs remain in 21 camps in the Region, while others live outside camps, often struggling with poor services and limited access to legal documents.

Displacement today is not only a legacy of conflict. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reports that by March 2025, climate pressures such as

Gov. Shapiro fields questions during Nanticoke visit

NANTICOKE — When Gov. Josh Shapiro was finished talking about workforce development at the IBEW Local 163 training center in Nanticoke, he fielded a few “off-topic” questions from the media.

The first questions dealt with the status of budget talks in Harrisburg. The Legislature is split on the budget — the House, where Democrats hold the majority, approved the governor’s $50 billion-plus budget, while the Republican-controlled Senate passed a budget bill for $47.6 billion in 2025-26.

Earlier this week, Shapiro expressed optimism that an agreement will be reached soon. On Friday in Nanticoke, he reiterated his belief that the two sides can work together and pass the budget.

“I will continue talking to leaders of both parties in the House and the Senate and I feel confident that we can get it done,” Shapiro said. “They all understand the issues and I feel strongly that we can come to an agreement.”

Earlier this week, the governor said he felt the two sides are not far apart.

“I spent a good bit of time with the leader of the Democratic caucus, and I spent two hours with the Senate Republican leader, Sen. Pittman,” Shapiro said. “We’re making progress. I actually thought that the move yesterday in the Senate brought us closer, because what it did was it made clear that the Senate is committed to funding mass transit, which has been a priority of mine. So I thought we took a step forward. We have a clear direction where we all need to go, and we’re working hard to get it done.”

Asked what it will take to “get it done,” he said, “We’re going to continue to work hard, work honestly, work…

Mohican State Park opens new Visitor Center

LOUDONVILLE – The Ohio Department of Natural Resources opened the Mohican State Park Visitor Center on Tuesday — the first visitor center since the state park opened in 1949.

The grand opening began with remarks from Park Manager Jenny Roar, Gov. Mike DeWine, ODNR Director Mary Mertz, Chief of the Division of Parks and Watercraft Glenn Cobb and Chief of the Division of Engineering Jeremy Wenner.

“Our goal every single day is for our 76 free state parks to be the best in the country,” DeWine said.

The Visitor Center is located near the park’s main campground area at 3136 State Route 3.

“This is public land, this is your land, and we want you to check it out and enjoy it and help us preserve it for the future,” Mertz said.

ODNR administered the roughly $4.7 million project with the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission through funding from Ohio’s capital budget. The project broke ground on June 10, 2024.

After the opening remarks, Gov. DeWine and his family, Mertz, Ashland County Sheriff Kurt J. Schneider and other attendees cut the ribbon and welcomed guests inside.

A Kayak sits in the central display of the Visitor Center. Gov. Mike DeWine, ODNR Director Mary Mertz, Ashland County Sheriff Kurt J. Schneider and others cut the ribbon for new Mohican State Park Visitor Center.

Inside the main entrance, guests are greeted with a vestibule containing restrooms and drinking fountains.

The central area boasts an exhibit equipped with recreational gear, including a kayak,  educational panels along the walls detailing the human and natural history of the park, and displays of animals found in the park.

Further in the building, there is a seating area in front of a fireplace and an activity…

The Ramapough Lenape Nation: New Jersey’s Hidden Indigenous Community

https://img.particlenews.com/image.php?url=2XrWpX_13s1nZmE00

Tucked away in the misty hills and dense forests of northern New Jersey lies a story few have heard—a tale of resilience, mystery, and deep-rooted connection to the land. The Ramapough Lenape Nation, an Indigenous people whose lineage stretches back centuries, has weathered storms of erasure, marginalization, and environmental threat. Their presence is as enduring as the granite ridges of the Ramapo Mountains they call home, yet their story remains largely hidden from public view. What is it about this community that has allowed them to persist against all odds? How have they maintained their traditions amid the shadows of history and the bustle of modern life? Their journey is a testament to survival, identity, and the unbreakable bond between people and nature.

A People Shrouded in Mystery and Misunderstanding

The Ramapough Lenape Nation has often been misunderstood, their roots obscured by centuries of changing borders, shifting populations, and racial prejudice. Many locals used to refer to them by derogatory names, not realizing the depth of their Indigenous heritage. Some even doubted their existence, calling them “mythical” or “mixed,” rather than recognizing their distinct Lenape ancestry. This skepticism has been a double-edged sword: while it sometimes spared them the worst of direct attacks, it also made them invisible in the eyes of law and policy. Despite this, the Ramapough have steadfastly maintained their identity, holding fast to oral histories, family lines, and traditions that tie them to the land. Their story is not one of disappearance, but of quiet endurance against a tide of misunderstanding.
