GIRLS WRESTLING: District 2 sends nine to states from Central Regional

MILTON – For Gia Silva, Saturday was like a redemption tour.

The Wallenpaupack sophomore was one spot away from Hershey last year, finishing fifth at the PIAA Girls’ Wrestling Central Regional.

This year, she made sure her ticket to the Giant Center wouldn’t hinge on a run through the consolation round.

She rolled through the championship bracket to earn second place as one of nine District 2 wrestlers who are headed to the Giant Center next weekend. Joining Silva are Honesdale’s Saige Olver (118), Maddison Miller (142) and Jaidyn Mikulak (285), Nanticoke Area’s Emily Kivler (112) and Sierra Ripka (170), Wyoming Valley West’s Bella Seip (118), Delaware Valley’s Kate Prior (155) and Crestwood’s Samara Bailey (285).

Sometimes, emotions play a big part in wrestling. For Silva, it was falling one spot short in last year’s regional, and bouncing back from a tough loss to Kivler in last week’s District 2 112-pound Championship.

She went back to work this week with one thought on her mind: Don’t fall one spot short this year.

“It’s pretty exciting because I have been waiting for this since last season,” Silva said. “This was like a comeback for me. Last week’s loss, you just have to leave it in the past. You can’t focus on it because you aren’t going to get anywhere if you do that. You just have to wrestle hard.”

She opened up with a 15-6 win over Milton’s Louise Cromley, and followed it up by pinning Bald Eagle Area’s Addison Tice in the quarters. She punched her ticket in a heart-pounding semifinal where she led Punxsutawney’s Evelynn Neale, 7-0, before giving up a late, seven-point move to tie the match at 7-7.

In overtime, she scored the bout-clinching takedown with 22 seconds left.

“I got kind of caught in that one move where she got some back points on me,”…

A Fashionable Madness: The Obsession with ‘Settler Colonialism’

A review of On Settler Colonialism: Ideology, Violence, and Justice by Adam Kirsch, 160 pages, W.W. Norton & co. (August 2024).

According to legend, in around 1626, Dutch trader Peter Minuit arranged the purchase of what came to be known as Manhattan by the New Netherland company for “24 dollars’ worth of beads and trinkets.” Historians have long considered the transaction just one—albeit especially significant—item in a long inventory of dispossession and displacement of natives by settlers in the New World. This history has more recently become the focus of public consternation. In its official land acknowledgement, for instance,

New York University acknowledges that it is located on Lenapehoking, ancestral homelands of the Lenape people. We recognize the continued significance of these lands for Lenape nations past and present, we pay our respects to the ancestors as well as to past, present, and emerging Lenape leaders…. We believe that addressing structural Indigenous exclusion and erasure is critically important and we are committed to actively working to overcome the ongoing effects and realities of settler-colonialism.

Yet attempting to generalise from patterns of European settlement in North America to other regions with distinct histories often produces absurd and catastrophic delusions, as Adam Kirsch argues inhis new book, On Settler Colonialism.

I am a descendant of Protestant Europeans who came to North America in the 1700s. But according to the precepts of settler colonialism, I remain as much a settler as my English and Scotch–Irish ancestors or their German, Polish, and Lithuanian immigrant followers and will bequeath my settler colonialist status to my children and their future offspring….

Road Closures and Crash Risks in Nanticoke

Crashes in busy areas like West Main Street can create significant traffic delays and safety concerns. Intersections and commercial areas often see increased accident risks due to congestion, frequent stops, and turning vehicles.

Big Brother unrecognisable with huge red and black mohican 15 years on

BIG Brother star Sam Pepper looks very different 15 years after he shot to fame on on the show.

Sam, 35, shot to notoriety during a foul-mouthed row with Josie Gibson as they practised a dance routine for a task.

His taste of Big Brother fame spurred him on to build a controversial YouTube careerCredit: Rex

Sam looks unrecognisable now with a red and black mohican in a recent post.

He posed for photos at Tokyo DisneySea as he showed off the eye-catching hairdo.

Sam captioned it: “Boys will be boys,” which prompted fans to say they liked the new look.

His taste of Big Brother fame spurred him on to build a controversial YouTube career and a petition to shut down his channel after a bad-taste prank in which he pretended to kill his friend got more than 200,000 backers.

Along with Logan Paul, Sam filmed a video lassoing women on the streets of Santa Monica and he later denied allegations of sexual assault.

The backlash began after Sam posted his Fake Hand Ass Pinch Prank online.

The video received a number of complaints and was taken down in days.

He then uploaded another video of a woman doing the same to men and that was also removed within minutes.

Sam later admitted it was all part of a social experiment to highlight sexual harassment against men.

Bain Capital Takes Control of Mohegan INSPIRE as MGE Defaults on Debt

All seemed to be going well for the Mohegan INSPIRE Entertainment Resort in South Korea. Unfortunately for the ambitious tribal operator, financial hurdles led to private equity firm Bain Capital securing a controlling stake in Mohegan’s Korea-facing division, MGE Korea.

In the aftermath of the takeover, Mohegan vowed to continue to negotiate an outcome that would be favorable to its investors.

Bain Accelerated the MGE Korea Mezzanine Loan

MGE reportedly defaulted on around $275 million in loans, despite the promising financials of its INSPIRE resort. Strategically situated on Yeongjong Island, this daring project represented Mohegan’s ambitions to grow on an international scale.

Mohegan INSPIRE opened its doors in January 2024 and launched casino gaming shortly after. As the largest integrated resort in South Korea, the property sought to capitalize on the demand for casino entertainment amid the rapid growth of Asian gaming.

Reports, however, claimed that MGE Korea failed to repay the loans it had borrowed in 2021. The loans were reportedly taken from various sources and helped Mohegan with its $1.6 billion project. Bain Capital was MGE Korea’s principal lender.

As MGE Korea defaulted on its loans, Bain Capital acquired a controlling stake in the Korean arm. The private equity firm confirmed that on Monday but refused to disclose further details about this move.

Mohegan Officials Confirmed the Takeover

Mohegan officials also commented on the matter, confirming Bain’s takeover of MGE Korea. The company elaborated that it had tried to prevent this scenario by negotiating amendments to its loan agreements. Unfortunately for Mohegan, Bain Capital rejected the proposals.

We made several good faith proposals for amending the financial covenants that are consistent with market precedents. However, Bain Capital has dismissed those proposals and provided counterproposals that would result in Bain Capital receiving large payments…

Mayor Adams Announces Ambitious Project to Make Accessible Historical Records of Enslaved People in

February 27, 2025

Led by Department of Records and Information Services, NYC Will Begin Transcribing Records Dating to 1660 to Help Historians and Everyday New Yorkers Locate Records Documenting Enslaved New Yorkers

City Calling for Volunteers to Help Transcribing Records as It Builds Searchable Database

Announcement Comes as Adams Administration Commemorates 400th Anniversary of New York City and Black History Month

WATCH: Department of Records and Information Services Explain the Historical Records and Its Importance

NEW YORK – New York City Mayor Eric Adams today announced an ambitious project to make accessible the historical records of thousands of formerly enslaved New Yorkers who lived in the five boroughs when the practice of slavery was legal here. Led by the New York City Department of Records and Information Services (DORIS), the project will transcribe digitized historical records dating from 1660 to 1827— when slavery became illegal in New York. Transcribed data will help historians and everyday New Yorkers locate the records of enslaved New Yorkers and even, in some cases, trace familial roots. To accomplish the project, the Adams administration is calling for volunteers to transcribe the digital records and help create searchable data. To learn more about the project, visit the digital archive, or volunteer, New Yorkers can visit Archives.nyc. This announcement comes as the city celebrates Black History Month and all the contributions Black New Yorkers have made to New York City, as well as the city’s 400th anniversary this year.

“We cannot build a better, brighter future without first acknowledging and accepting our past,” said Mayor Adams. “This ambitious project allows everyday New Yorkers to understand the history of enslaved people who shaped our city into what it is today. For too long, enslaved people were forgotten and lost to the past. Today, with projects like…

UPDATED: Bain Capital takes control of Mohegan’s South Korean resort

Mohegan, the gaming and entertainment company that owns Mohegan Sun, acknowledged late Tuesday night that Bain Capital, the Boston-based investment firm, has taken control of Inspire, the nearly $1.7 billion resort Mohegan opened a year ago in Incheon, South Korea.

Bain, the principal lender to MGE Korea Limited, the Mohegan subsidiary that owned Inspire, announced Monday it was exercising its right to take control of the subsidiary after an event of default.

In a statement posted on its website, Mohegan said that while it did not satisfy certain financial covenant tests, it had not missed a loan payment of principal or interest.

“Specifically, the loan held by Bain Capital does not mature until May 2027, with no principal payments due before the maturity date,” Mohegan said. “We made several good faith proposals for amending the financial covenants that are consistent with market precedents. However, Bain Capital has dismissed those proposals and provided counterproposals that would result in Bain Capital receiving large payments ahead of other Inspire lenders.”

An agent for Bain and other lenders behind a $275 million loan put Mohegan on notice last week that they had “accelerated” the debt, meaning they were demanding repayment of the entire balance of the loan.

“Further,” Ari Glazer, Mohegan’s chief financial officer, told investors on a quarterly earnings call, “the agent and Bain Capital, the principal lender, have purported to take certain remedies, including appropriation of the shares of MGE Korea Limited.”

Mohegan executives said during the call they were considering “appropriate responses” to the lenders’ notice.

Bain Capital said the change in Inspire’s ownership will have no impact on the resort’s…
