New Excavation Might Reveal Fate of Lost Colony of Roanoke

Recent excavations on Roanoke Island, North Carolina have revealed new evidence that may help archaeologists and historians determine the ultimate fate of the now-famous “lost colony” of Roanoke. The island, site of the earliest efforts by the English to colonize North America, vanished without a trace more than four centuries ago.

It seems the Roanoke colonists had direct interactions with Algonquian peoples who lived on the island right beside them, either trading with them or possibly integrating with them once they realized they couldn’t survive on their own. And it is these Algonquian priests who may hold the key.

The evidence in question was unearthed during excavations carried out by the North Carolina-based First Colony Foundation. This coalition of historians and archaeologists is dedicated to finding ruins and artifacts connected with efforts by the famed Sir Walter Raleigh and other English explorers to settle the eastern coast of the Americas during the latter half of the 16th century.

The focus of this research has been Roanoke Island, which can be found just off the northeastern coastline of North Carolina. It is here that that what came to be known as the lost colony of Roanoke was established in 1587, by a group of about 100 English settlers led by Governor John White, who had been appointed to that position by Queen Elizabeth I.

Sir Walter Raleigh himself had attempted to start a colony on the island three years earlier, but his efforts were aborted in the face of resistance from local Native American peoples. But it was the later colony which went down in history for disappearing without trace.

It is believed that the Algonquian nation absorbed the Roanoke colonists (William Cullen Bryant and Sydney Howard Gay / Public Domain)

Baseball Recap: Northwest Area falls despite strong effort from Trevor Dietz

If Northwest Area was riding high off their 11-5 takedown of Columbia Montour Vo-Tech last Thursday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Northwest Area Rangers fell just short of the Hanover Area Hawkeyes by a score of 6-5 on Saturday. The result was an unpleasant reminder to Northwest Area of the 20-3 loss they experienced in the pair’s previous head-to-head fixture back in May of 2023.

Trevor Dietz made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and scored a run while going 3-for-4.

On Hanover Area’s side, Nick Schiel spent all seven innings on the mound, and it’s clear why: he surrendered three earned (and two unearned) runs on 13 hits and racked up eight Ks.

On the hitting side, Cam Kratz was excellent, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and a double.

Northwest Area’s defeat dropped their record down to 11-6. As for Hanover Area, their win ended a seven-game drought at home dating back to last season and bumped them up to 3-12.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Northwest Area will take on Millville at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Hanover Area, their homestand will continue as they prepare to take on Greater Nanticoke Area at 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday.

Teammates Trizano, Rivera shine at BKFC’s debut at Mohegan Sun

UNCASVILLE — On Saturday night, Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship made its debut in New England as BKFC 61 Connecticut: Rivera vs. Straus took place at the Mohegan Sun Arena, in Uncasville, Connecticut.

The event was highlighted by former UFC fighter Jimmie Rivera against two-time Bellator champion, Daniel Straus. In the co-main event, former UFC fighter and TUF 27 champion, Michael Trizano took on Louie Lopez in less than a week’s notice.

Being natives of Ramsey, New Jersey, Rivera and Trizano are teammates and train together at Team Tiger Schulmann, in Elmwood Park, New Jersey. Though they didn’t fight in their home state, they fought close enough to have some friends and family come out for the event on a night that saw both New Jerseyans victorious.

The event saw 5,700 people in attendance in what BKFC president David Feldman called a successful debut in New England.

“Great start here in New England at Mohegan Sun, it was a good night for us,” said Feldman. “Great crowd for our first show. Great fights…. It was a good night. I enjoyed myself here. The staff here, the commission here, everybody here was a real pleasure to work with at Mohegan Sun.”

In the main event, Rivera, a former UFC bantamweight/featherweight who was the third-ranked bantamweight in the UFC in 2016, improved to 2-1-1 in BKFC following a unanimous decision victory (50-45 x2, 48-47) over former Bellator featherweight champion, Daniel Straus (0-2.)

Rivera enjoyed a special moment during his walkout. He graduated from the New Jersey police academy in January 2023, and was walked out by New Jersey police officers on Saturday night. With his teammate earning a first-round knockout, and fighting in front of his home people, he felt additional pressure heading into his fight.

“It’s always nerve-wracking, you always want to do a good job,” said Rivera. “Of…

Ground Broken On New Crisis Stabilization Center In Bucks County

The new center is slated to open in late 2025.

A first-of-its-kind facility in Pennsylvania has broken ground in Bucks County to serve as a walk-in, standalone crisis stabilization center.

The 22,000-square-foot Bright Path Center will be strategically located next to the existing Lenape Valley Foundation site at 500 North West Street, on the grounds of but separate from Doylestown Hospital, in Doylestown Township.

Construction is expected to begin this summer, with a target opening slated for late 2025.

The ceremonial groundbreaking involved staff from the Lenape Valley Foundation, the Bucks County Commissioners, and a number of other partners on Tuesday.

Sharon Curran, president and CEO of Lenape Valley Foundation, emphasized the comprehensive nature of the services that will be offered at the new center.

“Mental illness, substance misuse and addiction, and intellectual disabilities do not discriminate; they are found in every community, everywhere in the world. The difference is how the community responds to these challenges,” said Curran.

The facility will offer 24/7 access to behavioral health professionals ready to help individuals and families facing urgent challenges related to mental health, drug and alcohol use, and intellectual disabilities.

The center is designed with separate spaces for children and adults to offer compassionate, trauma-informed care, officials said.

During the groundbreaking ceremony, Commissioners Chairperson Diane Ellis-Marseglia highlighted the center’s future impact, particularly for local families.

“In honor of all the mothers who will be able to find help when their children, of any age, need it – and all the mothers who didn’t have a place like Bright Path Center to go to when they needed it,” she…

Board of Public Works Approves $12.9 Million for Recreation and Land Preservation

Maryland Department of Natural Resources photo

The Board of Public Works approved Maryland Department of Natural Resources items including more than $12.9 million in grants to local governments and land trusts to preserve and protect land, and provide recreational opportunities for Marylanders.

Program Open Space – Local  provides funding for county and municipal governments for the planning, purchase and development of recreational land or facilities.

A total of $11.98 million in Program Open Space – Local was approved for 8 projects, including a $5.4 million grant for the acquisition of 5.4 acres for a future indoor and outdoor recreation complex.

The facility, located in Anne Arundel County, will be named the Edgewater Community Park – Lee Family Community Center.

“Program Open Space continues to leverage state money with local support for recreation facilities in our communities,” said Hilary Bell, director of land acquisition and planning for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. “These projects in turn provide Marylanders with proven health benefits for citizens, protection of open space from development, and investment in our local economies.”

Additional approvals include:

  •  $800,000 from the Local Parks and Playgrounds Infrastructure Program for renovations to Rosemary Hills – Lyttonsville Local Park in Montgomery County.  The Local Parks and Playgrounds Infrastructure Program was funded in FY 2022 and FY 2023 to provide grant funds primarily to local governments for park and recreation projects.
  •   More than $140,000 in Rural Legacy funding was granted to The Conservation Fund for a conservation easement on 47 acres in the Nanticoke Rural Legacy Area in Dorchester County, thereby permanently protecting prime agricultural land which is part of a large block of working lands in the Nanticoke River watershed. The Rural Legacy Program, created in 1997, conserves large working landscapes across 35 locally designated areas…

Archaeologists find new clues about North Carolina’s ‘Lost Colony’ from the 16th century

Archaeologists from The First Colony Foundation have yielded a tantalizing clue about the fate of the Lost Colony, the settlers who disappeared from North Carolina’s Roanoke Island in the late 16th century.

The story of an English settlement known as the “Lost Colony” of early explorers of Roanoke and Sir Walter Raleigh is one of the most fascinating mysteries in American history.

John White led a party of roughly 115 English settlers who arrived on Roanoke Island, which is located slightly off the east coast of modern-day North Carolina, in 1587. The first attempt to colonize the island had failed a few years prior, so the settlers were the second group to try.

Even from their first days, the settler community had a rocky relationship with some of the Indigenous tribes that lived in the area. Eventually, White returned to England to request more help for his burgeoning community. Along with the other settlers, he left his wife, daughter Eleanor Dare and her husband Ananias Dare, and his infant granddaughter Virginia—the first English child born in America—to continue building the colony.

White arrived in England at the same time as the Spanish Armada prepared to invade the nation, which unfortunately caused a delay in his return to the colony. By the time he returned to Roanoke in 1590, his family and the other settlers had vanished. The word “Croatoan” carved into a tree provided the only meaningful hint as to what had happened to them. The word probably referred to Croatoan Island, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) south.

There are various explanations for what happened to today the “lost” Roanoke colony settlers. Some believe the colonists attempted to return to England on smaller ships, some argue that the Spanish attacked them, while others contend that the local…

Earlier this year, guitarist Steve Lukather revealed there will be no new Toto music “right now”, due to legal complications. The guitarist made the comment speaking to eonmusic at the Leslie West Tribute, which took place in Agoura Hills, California on Tuesday, January 23.

Lukather was on hand to honour the late Mountain band leader at the bash in aid of charity MusiCares along with a host of others including Doors’ legend Robbie Krieger, Bon Jovi man Phil X, and Eagles of Death Metal’s Jesse Hughes.

Pressed about new music from Toto, given that the band members including Steve himself, singer Joseph Williams and pianist David Paich have all collaborated on each others’ most recent solo albums, he replied; “Not right now. There’s too much legal bullshit with that. I mean, we make records. I made a record about six months ago with all the guys. We still love each other and play.”

Read more at eonmusic.co.uk.

Across June and July, in to early August, the band will stage a headline tour of Europe. For fans in the UK, plans are being worked on now to stage a run of shows in…

Iraq Seeks End Of UN Assistance Mission By End-2025

BAGHDAD: Iraq has asked that the UN assistance mission set up after the US-led invasion of the country in 2003 end its operations by the end of 2025, saying it is no longer needed because Iraq has made significant progress towards stability.

Based in Baghdad’s heavily fortified Green Zone, the mission was established with a broad mandate to assist in the development of Iraqi institutions, support political dialogue and elections, and promote human rights.

Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani said Iraq wants to deepen cooperation with other UN organizations, but the political work of the UN assistance mission, known as UNAMI, is no longer needed.

The head of the mission in Iraq frequently shuttles between top political, judicial and security officials in a job that supporters see as important to conflict prevention and resolution but critics have often described as meddling.

Sudani in a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that the country has managed to take important steps in many areas, especially those under the mandate of UNAMI.

The Iraqi government has decided to end several international missions from 2023, including the US-led coalition formed in 2014 to fight Islamic State and the UN mission set up to help hold the jihadist group accountable for its crimes.

Iraqi officials say the country has come a long way since the sectarian bloodshed following the US-led invasion and Islamic State’s attempt to establish a caliphate, and that it no longer needs as much international help.

Some diplomats and UN officials are also concerned about…
