The top three engineering firms interested in work on the closed West Nanticoke/Nanticoke Bridge may be identified in the next 10 days, Luzerne County Manager Romilda Crocamo said Wednesday
County Council can schedule presentations from the top three engineering firms after PennDOT approves a county administrative decision to eliminate two firms from consideration. Crocomo provided council members with an update on the closed bridge on Wednesday.
On March 20, Crocamo decided to close the bridge over the Susquehanna River shortly after engineers conducting a scheduled routine bridge inspection determined advanced deterioration and section loss of primary, load-carrying components were critical deficiencies.
The county-owned bridge, built in 1914, links Nanticoke City to the West Nanticoke section of Plymouth Twp. The next-closest bridge over the river is the Route 29 bridge connecting Hanover Twp. and Plymouth Twp.
On April 16, Nanticoke, county, federal and state officials met “to discuss the critical need for a crossing over the Susquehanna River,” Crocamo said.
“During the meeting, all parties expressed a unified commitment to achieving this goal as expeditiously as possible. The federal, state, and county elected officials acknowledged the importance of enhancing connectivity and accessibility for the communities served by this crossing,” Crocamo said. “However, it was emphasized by all officials in attendance that while the urgency of this project is recognized, safety must remain the paramount concern. All representatives agreed that any plans moving forward will prioritize the safety of the public and the integrity of the infrastructure.”
Attendees at the April 16 meeting included: U.S. Rep. Rob Bresnahan, R-8, Dallas Twp.; State Senator Lisa Baker, R-20, Lehman Twp.; State Rep. Alec Ryncavage, R-119, Hanover Twp.; John Yudichak, former state senator and president of Luzerne County Community College; and Rich Roman, district executive of PennDOT District 4.
