Developing Horses Impress; McDaniel Scores First Win

Pocono Downs at Mohegan Pennsylvania featured a trio of $20,270 events for developing horses on its Monday, Feb. 19 card, the second of the year at the mountain oval.

The faster winner in the two pacing divisions was Train Station, a son of Roll With Joe who was victorious in his second straight start, here in 1:54.2 despite cold and windy conditions. Jason Bartlett got the Per Engblom trainee to the top in front of the stands and rated the pace, then stepped him home in :27.3 to hold a 1-1/4-length lead at the finish over Dark As Night, who necked El Yerno for second. Morrison Racing Stable shares ownership in the visitor to Victory Lane with Brian Gordon.

In the other pacing headliner, Fade To Light utilized the Pocono Pike to chase down a hard-used Rusty Beach by a neck in 1:54.4. Anthony Napolitano, posting his second driving triple in as many 2024 cards at Pocono to take the early meet lead, sulkysat behind the Bettors Delight gelding for trainer Jose Godinez and the dual ownership of Godinez Racing Stable LLC and Jhonatan Garcia Guia.

On the trotting side, Gatsby sat a nice two-hole journey, then rallied up the inside to catch pacesetting chalk Chef Rocco by three-quarters of a length in 1:57.4. Braxten Boyd, who joined “A-Nap” and Ridge Warren with three victories each, drove the Cantab Hall gelding to the win for trainer Joe Karrat and owner Christopher Zollo.

On the training side, 29-year-old Lesley McDaniel, who came to Pocono from Hawkinsville, Georgia via Maine, recorded the first victory in his young career when he had the veteran Mister Big gelding My Mind Is Madeup ready after 72 days away, winning a 1:55.1 contest for driver Simon Allard and…

Curtain Calls: ‘Manahatta’ in Berkeley an intimate portrayal of indigenous families

The intimate portrayal of an indigenous Lenape family forms playwright Mary Kathryn Nagle’s work “Manahatta,” running through March 10 at the Aurora Theatre, 2081 Addison St., Berkeley.

Nagle, a citizen of the Cherokee Nation, draws parallels between the forced removal and taxation of Native Americans during the 2008 financial crisis and the 1626 Dutch purchase of the island of Manhattan (Manahatta in Lenape), the Lenape’s ancestral homeland.

In her story, Nagle follows Jane Snake, a young Lenape woman who works as a securities trader on Wall Street. As Snake’s career thrives, back home in Oklahoma her mother and sister grieve the loss of family and struggle to maintain their culture and language while making enough money to stay in their home.

Shannon R. Davis directs with Livia Gomes Demarchi as Jane Snake.

Martinez: Everyone seems power-hungry these days. Whether it’s for political office, the larger market share of a product or, in the case of a new play, an entire kingdom. Playwright Melynda Kiring spins her own tale of power in her latest work “Nomen,” premiering March 1 and running through March 17 at the Campbell Theater in Martinez.

“It’s the story of a young princess battling a usurper who wants to take the crown,” Kiring said. “A secretary is asked…

A Symphony of Indigenous Voices Reshaping America’s Concert Music Scene

In the heart of America’s bustling concert music scene, one voice sings a different tune, echoing the narratives of those long marginalized. Brent Michael Davids, a Mohican Munsee Lenape composer, has dedicated nearly half a century to amplifying indigenous voices in a domain where they have historically been silenced. With a career adorned with prestigious awards and performances in iconic venues like Carnegie Hall and The Kennedy Center, Davids has not only composed music but also composed a movement towards equity and representation.

Harmonizing Heritage with High Notes

The journey of Davids is not just a tale of musical achievement but of relentless advocacy for indigenous representation. As the co-founder and co-director of the Native American Composer Apprentice Project (NACAP), he has turned his notes into bridges, connecting indigenous youth with the world of concert music. Through NACAP, Davids has empowered young Native Americans to compose their own music, ensuring their stories and spirits resonate in concert halls and beyond. His vision extends to the heart of Manhattan, where, as co-director of the Lenape Center, he continues to weave the rich tapestry of indigenous narratives into the urban fabric.

“Requiem for America”: A Lamentation and Celebration

Among Davids’ most ambitious projects, “Requiem for America Singing for the Invisible People”, stands as a poignant critique and commemoration of America’s genocidal foundation. This project seeks not only to remember the pain of the past but to transform it into a catalyst for healing and understanding. By featuring Indigenous singers from local tribal communities across every state, Davids’ Requiem becomes a nationwide anthem of resilience and remembrance. It is a testament to his belief in the power of music to narrate history’s untold stories and to uplift the voices of the invisible.

Crowded rooms. Computers in the hall. Should Maitland spend $19 milllion for a new library?

If you need to use the computers at the Maitland Public Library, you’ll probably end up sitting in the middle of a hallway. The building, parts of which are more than a century old, has no space for a computer lab.

Now Maitland’s leaders are asking city residents to fix that and a host of other shortcomings by supporting a $14 million bond on the March 19 ballot to build a new and improved library.

The question for voters is whether the improvements are worth the property tax increase proposed to pay for them. It will cost the typical Maitland homeowner more than $100 annually.

“It doesn’t meet our needs anymore,” said Stacie Larson, director of the Maitland Public Library, of the current facility. “It’s just too small to hold the collection of books and telescopes and baking pans and DVDs and everything else that we have.”

City public information officer Robert Sargent said that Maitland leaders began the process toward improving the library in 2017. A study of the current building revealed the need for repairs on the HVAC, electrical lines, roof and more. The city council ultimately decided that it would be more efficient and less costly to build a new library.

The current library building stands at 12,300 sq. ft. over one story, while the new building will be 20,000 sq. ft. across two stories.

The overall cost of the project would be about $18.7 million. The city has about $5 million in existing funds to allocate toward the project.
