‘Manahatta’ to Make Bay Area Premiere

“(There’s) capitalism. And Big Brother … the themes of 1984 … And there’s also historical — I’m thinking of Born with Teeth — illuminating certain periods of time to bring us back to the present. These mirrored issues, or these issues that we’ve been going through time and time again, and don’t seem to ever clear up. It’s a different version of the same old story.”

The first read-through at Aurora Thatre of ‘Manhatta’ with actors Linda Amayo-Hassan, Oogie Push, Ixtlán and Livia Gomes Dimarchi. (Alandra Hileman)

For Davis, who is of Potawatomi, Ojibwe, and Sámi descent, working with a powerhouse majority-Native cast has been a joyful and generative process. It speaks to the relative rarity of Native work on Bay Area stages to note that several actors are making their Aurora Theatre debut with Manahatta, though many have worked on other projects together before.

“Indigenous and Native theatre is a pretty small community,” Davis points out. “We run in small circles. We get a lot of the same emails. We see each other around. But also, Aurora hired the Casting Collective … and I did have a chat with them upfront about cultural specificity and identity politics around Native casting. … With that in mind, I just called in everyone I knew of that I knew would be right in the Bay Area. And the Casting Collective (worked) with another colleague that I met up at OSF who identifies as Indigenous, so they already had a pretty robust list as well.”

One of these performers, Ixtlán (seen recently at Aurora Theatre in Cyrano), not only worked with Davis on the OSF production playing the same doubled role of Se-ket-tu-may-qua / Luke, but on many projects since — “My art partner,” as Davis fondly…

WYOMING AREA BOYS BASKETBALL ROUNDUPWarriors suffer first division loss, but close in on WVC Tournament appearance

Wyoming Area lost its hold on the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 boys basketball lead Tuesday, but battled back Friday to move within one win of securing a berth in the WVC Tournament.

The Warriors finished the week even in the loss column and a half-game behind Holy Redeemer at 8-1 in the division, leading to a possibility of a first-place tie. They are 13-5 and third of 10 teams in the race for eight District 2 Class 4A playoffs.

The top two finishers in each division enter the four-team WVC playoffs. Wyoming Area closed in on playing in that tournament for the first time with Friday’s road win over third-place Nanticoke.

Wyoming Area 58, Nanticoke 52

NANTICOKE — Wyoming Area and Nanticoke battled through four quarters Friday night in a physical game that bordered on a slugfest.

The Warriors, just like in their previous matchup with the Trojans this season, were able to land the decisive blows when it mattered most.

Wyoming Area came up with big bucket after big bucket in the fourth, putting a feisty Nanticoke squad down by a 58-52 final score.

“It was big,” Wyoming Area coach Anthony Macario said. “We needed this one. We knew it was going to be super physical.

“They got us here in the playoffs last year in a real similar type game, and our guys responded when it counted.”

Dane Schutter led the Warriors with 19 points and Brady Noone had 16. After a relatively quiet first half, Noone was a huge catalyst for Wyoming Area in the final eight minutes when he scored nine points.

Though Wyoming Area led pretty much throughout, the Trojans refused to give an inch and kept the Warriors within striking distance through three quarters, trailing by just six heading into the final quarter.

As UConn’s Geno Auriemma reaches 1,200 career wins, Chris Dailey deserves her flowers too

HARTFORD — One of the first decisions Geno Auriemma made after he started as UConn women’s basketball coach in 1985 was hiring Chris Dailey to his staff. After winning his 1,200th career game on Wednesday night, he knows hitting a home run with that decision has helped define his ever-growing legacy.

“I knew very, very early, before we played our first game or I even had the job yet that if she would agree to come here and coach with me and us, we could be good,” Auriemma said after the 67-34 win over Seton Hall. “Obviously nobody envisioned this, but that decision I think made every other decision possible. … By getting that one right, we set ourselves for something like this to happen.”

Dailey has been Auriemma’s other half for all 39 seasons at UConn, three as an assistant and the last 36 as associate head coach. In fact, several of Auriemma’s 1,200 wins are technically Dailey’s: She has led the team to 17 victories when serving as head coach in his absence. Her perfect record includes wins in the 1989 and 1997 Big East Tournament championship games and in the first two rounds of the 2021 NCAA Tournament.

Only two other coaches in college basketball history have surpassed 1,200 wins, Stanford women’s coach Tara Vanderveer (1,206) and former Duke men’s coach Mike Krzyzewski (1,202). Auriemma and Dailey are the only pair to reach the milestone in fewer than 45 seasons and to do so with a single program. (Krzyzewski won 73 games as head coach at Army).

A partnership as long — and successful — as Auriemma and Dailey’s is rare in college…

UK Touts Iraq’s Potential as Regional Stabiliser at UN

Thank you, Madam President, I would like to welcome the representatives of Iraq and Kuwait to the chamber.

Let me start by thanking the Special Representative for her briefing, and for the important work of the UN Assistance Mission in Iraq. I would like to highlight three points of particular importance for the UK.

First, we commend the progress being made by Iraq across the breadth of political and economic issues set out by the Special Representative. UNAMI’s contribution to that progress is deeply valued by the United Kingdom. We look forward to discussing the outcome of the Strategic Review being led by Volker Perthes and the future shape and function of UNAMI, in discussion with relevant parties, including of course the sovereign state of Iraq.

Second, Iraq has the potential to play a strong stabilising role in the region. To do so, it is critical that its territory not be used by Iranian proxies to destabilise the region. We offer our condolences to the families of those killed in Iran’s 15 January strike on Erbil. We urge Iran to deescalate tensions in the region. We reiterate our commitment to the Global Coalition against Daesh, which operates within Iraq at the invitation of the Iraqi government, as well as our commitment to a secure and sovereign Iraq.

Third, we congratulate Iraq on holding its first provincial elections for a decade. We look forward to the holding of elections in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq without further delay and encourage all relevant actors to take steps to ensure necessary preparations are made to ensure they are free, fair and timely. We hope a sustainable outcome on the transfer of budget allocations from Baghdad to Erbil can be agreed and we encourage relevant political parties to play a constructive role to support that.

Finally, Madam President, we…

South Korea: Mohegan to open first foreigners-only casino in almost two decades on Satuday

Mohegan Inspire Resort announced that the first South Korean foreigners-only casino in almost two decades is set to open on Saturday in Yeongjongdo, Incheon.

The property got its license from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism on January 23 to open a new foreigners-only casino in South Korea for the first time in 19 years, as reported by The Korean Herald.

Mohegan Inspire Resort’s casino is considered the country’s biggest gambling property with more than 150 types of table games, 390 slot machines, and 160 electronic table games (ETG) to entertain overseas tourists. The two-story casino also has a special floor for VIP guests, featuring a Guandong-style fine dining restaurant.

After the resort held its soft opening on November 30, 2023, it hosted several K-pop idol concerts as well as the Melon Music Awards (MMA), one of the nation’s biggest music awards shows, in December.

The resort is the eighth property of its parent company, Mohegan. Spanning a land area of 461,661 square meters, the facility required an investment of approximately KRW 2 trillion ($1.53 billion).

The entertainment resort is scheduled to make its grand opening in the first quarter and plans to open all available facilities within the second half of this year, according to Mohegan Inspire Resort officials.

Earlier in the month, the resort announced its achievement of a five-star hotel rating from the Korean Hotel Rating System, administered by the Korea Tourism Association (KTA). This recognition, the highest in the Korean system, underscores the resort’s commitment to excellence in luxury hospitality, according to the announcement.

Beavers fall to Bison in D-10 team dual semifinals

Coaches react - 2 pts.tif

Corry’s coaches react to Cooper Hodak getting a two-point takedown. Standing is Brad Allen. From left are Mark Munsee, Austin Gillihan, Travis Proper and Lucas Munsee.

SHARON — In high school wrestling, you can’t take anything for granted.

Corry had high expectations at Saturday’s District 10 Class 2A Team Duals on Feb. 3. But after disposing of Grove City 45-21 in the quarterfinals, the Beavers fell to Fort LeBoeuf 33-24 in the semifinals.

Ironically, LeBoeuf’s head coach is former Corry state finalist Shane McChesney, and one of his assistants is Corry state champion (1984) Ed Burkhart.

In the semis, Corry built an 18-12 lead through seven matches. However, the Bison then won five straight, including two crucial swing matches to virtually wrap up the match with a forfeit in the next-to-last bout.

To kick things off, FL’s heavyweight John Duran pinned Owen Nickerson before Wyatt Swan was a 9-4 winner at 107 pounds.

Logan Hodak turns his Grove City foe before a first-period fall.

Beaver freshman Carson Braswell pulled off a stunner, decking Brady Bowers 33 seconds into overtime after going 4-4 in regulation.

Logan Hodak (121) then won 3-1, giving Corry a 12-6 lead. Bison Jake Bennett then pitched a 4-0 shutout over Steven Willis, getting three third-period points via a nearfall. Isaiah Bayle then lost 10-6 to Brody Myers, and the contest was tied at 12.

At 139 pounds, Will Allen was up 6-1 when the LeBoeuf wrestler suffered a shoulder injury and defaulted, giving Corry six points and an 18-12 lead.

Jackson Bowers then used a late takedown to subdue Beaver Cody Proper 4-3. At 152, Bison ace Joe Przybycien’s first-period pin gave LeBeouf a 21-18 lead.

At the pivotal 160 bout, FL’s Aidan…

The last of the Ugandan Mohicans

This Uganda has great traditions that have refused to be spoilt by its 60 years of corrupt and violent politics.  It is anchored by, a sadly, dwindling cohort of grand gentlemen and ladies, some of them wonderfully eccentric.

I wrote here a while back, the story of one of them, who had a good line of Bullmastiff dogs. My veterinary doctor, the late Prof Johnson Acon (bless his soul) at Makerere University, used to help me collect the finest dogs. He tipped me of this gentleman, and that he asked him to sell me a puppy. The good gentleman insisted that he had to interview me first, to ensure I had the ubuntu to raise his dog right.

I made my way to his home. We sat on the balcony and his wife served tea and scones, as they do in historical dramas like “The Crown”.

Very ornate teapot, cups, and spoons. He kept a watchful eye to see if I knew my etiquette, as we talked dogs, books, and international affairs. He also asked about my parents, and if they were good Christians.

I passed the test. He was pleased. He gave me a puppy. He declined to take money for it. Whenever he came to Nairobi, he called and he would have a fine dinner.

Another one, a proud grand man from a far corner of western Uganda who was a good friend, called me one day to meet over a solemn issue. When I presented myself before him, he told me he was revising his will and adding details on how he wanted his funeral conducted. He wanted me to read a poem…
