A victory for Vernon just wasn’t in the cards on Friday as the team wasn’t able to take the lead at any point. They came up short against the High Point Wildcats, falling 35-14. The Vikings were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Wildcats apparently hadn’t forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in October of 2023.

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Washington Township). They came out on top against the Lenape Indians by a score of 35-26 on Friday. For the Minutemen, this counts as revenge for the 24-21 defeat the Indians walked away with the last time they faced one another back in November of 2021.

A week after losing to Sparta, 39-7, Newton came back to beat High Point, 36-32, there Friday, Sept. 27.

The Wildcats (4-1) previously were undefeated this season.

Nick Kurilko made three touchdowns for the Braves (2-2) and Hunter Wolfe and Evan Cotter made one each. Matt Ellsworth kicked four extra points, and Kurilko added two points on a pass from Ellsworth.

Ellsworth completed five of nine pass attempts for a total of 132 yards. Kurilko rushed for 135 yards.

No statistics were available for High Point.

Sparta beats Vernon

Sparta defeated Vernon, 30-13, at home Sept. 27.

Stone Herbison, Luke Doster, Brady Shagawat and Christian Brevig each made a touchdown for the Spartans (4-1). All four were on passes from quarterback Shane Hoover.

The team also kicked a field goal and three extra points.

Joseph Rodriguez made a touchdown for the Vikings (3-2) on a 79-yard pass from quarterback Aden Karwoski, and Luca Vizzini scored another one.

The only loss for the Spartans (4-1) this season was to Montville, 33-9, in the opener Aug. 29.

Wallkill Valley wins

Wallkill Valley defeated Kittatinny, 20-7, at home Saturday, Sept. 28.

Connor Hoebee made two touchdowns on passes from quarterback Zack Clarken for the Rangers (3-2), and Joe Pallay added another. Cole Bolich kicked two extra points.

Jaden Roberts scored the only touchdown for the Cougars (2-2) and Lucas Inglima kicked the extra point.

Clarken completed 15 of 28 pass attempts for a total of 170 yards. He also rushed for 107 yards.

Sussex Tech wins

Sussex Tech shut out Hopatcong, 43-0, there Sept. 27.

Brian Gruber made three touchdowns for the Mustangs; Gavin Mericle made two; and John Foli scored one.

Gruber kicked five extra points. He also rushed for 100 yards.
