Biggest upsets of the 2025 NJSIAA softball playoffs so far

1/37

Softball: Camden Catholic vs. Paul VI, SJ Non-Public A first-round, May 27, 2025

The 2025 NJSIAA softball state tournament is well underway, and as there are every year, this year has provided for some major upsets.

Take a look at all the seeded upsets by section ahead of Friday’s public first round and quarterfinal games.

We highlighted every double-digit seeds that won as well as non-public quarterfinal upsets.

North 1, Group 1

Late run sparks North Warren

The 13th-seeded Patriots scored a late run in the top of the seventh inning to go on the road and defeat fourth-seeded Butler, 5-4. Hannah Allen and Kayleigh Dolinsky each drove in two runs for the Patriots, while Riley Grandin allowed just one earned run in five innings and Carly Selesky tossed two no-hit innings in relief with five strikeouts.

Bears roar in upset

Three hits, two doublesand three RBI by catcher Alexis Palmer helped 10th-seeded Hawthorne get past seventh-seeded Hasbrouck Heights, 6-3, in a game that was played over two days due to weather. Karlie Stier struck out 10 in the effort for Hawthorne. The Bears will now host 15th-seeded Lenape Valley in the only all-double digit quarterfinal in North Jersey so far.

Lenape Valley wins first playoff game in six years

It’s been six years since Lenape Valley last won a postseason game but the 15th-seeded Patriots — who were 5-14 entering the state tournament — made their trek to Wallington worth it as they downed the second-seeded Panthers, 5-4 for the team’s first playoff win since 2019. Callie Stevenson drove in two runs for Lenape Valley, while Paige Henriksen struck out six in seven innings of work and scattered seven hits and two walks.

Hawthorne keeps underdog status alive, makes N1G1 semis as 10-seed

Like all good cleanup hitters, Hawthorne junior Ava Martinello revels the opportunity to be called upon to produce runs for the Bears.

And she was in top form at the absolute perfect time on Friday as she went 2-for-2 with two RBI and a solo homer as 10th-seeded Hawthorne downed 15th-seeded Lenape Valley, 3-1, in the North 1, Group 1 quarterfinals.

“It suits me, and it makes me want to hit more,” Martinello said. “I’m more excited to go up there and hit.”

Martinello’s solo shot in the bottom of the second inning was particularly big as it tied the game at 1-1 after Lenape Valley’s Callie Stevenson hit a solo homer of her own in the top of the second.

The Patriots, who were fresh off a 5-4 upset over second-seeded Wallington on Thursday, trotted out rookie hurler Michaela Dennehy and that presented issues for Hawthorne.

Dennehy threw hardly any fastballs, instead relying on changeups, screwballs, drop balls and more as she was largely able to keep Hawthorne’s offense off balance. And the Bears only mustered five hits as a team, struck out six times and grounded into two double plays in the infield with the bases loaded.

“We generally don’t love facing that style of pitching,” Hawthorne coach Mook Iannacone said. “It takes time to adjust. Even if I tell them it’s like doing front toss with me and I tell them to sit back and drive it up the middle, it’s tough.”

Eventually, Hawthorne figured things out and was able to time up Dennehy and make some harder contact, including a double by Emma Riglewicz and some hard hit singles to the outfield.

But, thanks to Martinello’s home run, Iannacone knew eventually Hawthorne would figure things out.

“She’s our power hitter and our muscle,” Iannacone said. “We don’t have many home runs but she’s got a…

FANA’s Ambassador Albaum Territory expands to Poland and Hungary

For expedience’s sake, the Federation of Aboriginal Nations of the Americas will be referred to as FANA.

” On Tuesday, March 25, 2024, The Federation of Aboriginal Nations of the Americas’ Minister of International Affairs and its UN Ambassador Principal Chief Dr. Ronald Yonaguska Holloway of the SandHill Band of Lenape and Cherokee Indians (NY, NJ, PA), announced the appointment of Lorne H. Albaum as the Federation’s ambassador to Germany and Austria.

Mr. Albaum’s responsibilities will be to find a suitable location for the embassy, as well as establish contact with individuals and entities that advance FANA’s overall global strategic objectives…”

These were some of the lines in my Daily Kos Article dated April 10, 2024, regarding the appointment of Ambassador Albaum as FANA’s ambassador to Germany and Austria.

Due to Ambassador Albaum’s inroads in establishing FANA’s goals, FANA’s executive board decided to expand his territory to include Hungary and Poland.

He has been a lawyer dealing in public company acquisitions for 30 years, as well as commercial corporations,  Bank acquisitions, and the takeover of a large public company.

Ambassador Albaum is a specialist in corporate law and will be a significant help in setting up FANA’s banking network in Europe and Asia. He will help with our free trade between Sovereign entities and FANA. He will be appointed FANA’s judge on business affairs, who will report to Lord Orville Thomas, the Federation’s chief justice.

He will work with Judge Lady Sheila Davenport in the United Kingdom. Ambassador Albaum has worked with FANA Ambassador Fred Hazell and Chief of Staff Ambassador Scott for over 25 years.
Ambassador Albaum will be spending a considerable amount of time in all four countries in order to benefit FANA and fulfill its objectives.

Wallkill Valley wins county battle with Lenape Valley in N1, G1 opener

Jack Tucker drove in all three runs as Wallkill Valley defeated Lenape Valley, 3-1, in the first round of the North 1, Group 1 tournament in Hamburg.

Tucker finished with a perfect day at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a double and three RBI to lead the Rangers’ offense. Chris Collins and Dylan Miller each scored a run for Wallkill Valley, which collected eight hits in the victory.

The Rangers and Patriots had split two games in the regular season.

The fourth-seeded Rangers (15-6) broke through in the third inning to take a 1-0 lead before adding two crucial insurance runs in the fifth. Lenape Valley (11-12) managed to score its lone run in the sixth inning but couldn’t complete the comeback against the Rangers’ strong pitching.

Ryan Miller was dominant on the mound for Wallkill Valley, striking out seven batters while allowing just three hits and one unearned run over 5⅓ innings. Miller also contributed offensively, going 1-for-3 with a run scored and a stolen base.

Tyler Haberstroh closed out the game with 1⅔ innings of scoreless relief, striking out two batters while allowing just one hit to secure the win.

The Rangers’ defense committed two errors but managed to limit the damage, while Lenape Valley had one error in the field.

With the victory, Wallkill Valley advances to host fifth-seeded New Milford in the sectional quarterfinals.

Rockland becomes first county in state to oppose Project Maple gas pipeline

[]NEW CITY – The Rockland County Legislature has voted to formally oppose “Project Maple,” a fracked gas pipeline expansion proposed by Enbridge, becoming the first county in the state to do so.

[]The resolution adds to the growing grassroots push urging Governor Hochul to stop the project. Environmental and community groups across the state have urged Hochul to reject all permits associated with the project and prevent any further fossil fuel buildout in the state.

[]“Rockland County’s vote shows just how widespread the opposition to Project Maple has become,” said Melissa Hoffmann, Hudson Valley Organizer with Food & Water Watch. “This pipeline expansion would drag us backwards on climate and put communities across the region at risk. It’s time for Governor Hochul to listen to the people she was elected to serve and commit to stopping Project Maple.”

[]Project Maple would expand the capacity of the Algonquin Pipeline, which runs through the lower Hudson Valley. Its opponents also said the project poses serious safety and public health risks for communities along the pipeline route.

[]“Project Maple” includes plans to expand the Stony Point compressor station in Rockland County, which would increase emissions of pollutants such as nitrogen oxides and particulate matter, exacerbating air quality concerns in the region.

[]“I am opposed to this because of the damage from the life cycle of infrastructure that pipelines perpetuate. The damage to our environment – air, water, earth – and damages to all life,” said Chief Dwaine Perry of Ramapough Munsee Lenape Nation. “We, the Ramapough Munsee Lenape Nation, have stood against pipelines before, and we stand against Project Maple now. I applaud the Rockland County Legislature for their resolution against the Project Maple pipeline expansion.”
