Last month, New Hope Borough’s Lenape Park on West Ferry Street reopened after renovations.

“Just like any house or public space, it needed a little more TLC to refurbish it to its original beauty,” Beth Hasher, chairperson of New Hope Borough Park and Recreation Board, said during a June ceremony.

The park was established by the borough in 2008.

Over the years, the park has provided a spot for relaxing and even small weddings.

In other parks news, according to Councilwoman Lousie Feder, a bench dedicated to retired public works director Tom Carroll was installed at Green Roof Park at borough hall.

Carroll worked for the borough since 1993, and he led the public works department since 1996. Carroll retired last fall and was replaced by Matt Decker.

State waives down payment for Hamilton’s Lake Lenape Dam

HAMILTON TOWNSHIP — The state has given additional support to help the township with its renovation project for the Lake Lenape Dam.

The Local Finance Board voted in May to waive a requirement that the township make a 5% down payment on its half of the funds to be borrowed, something that would have cost the township about $250,000.

Township Chief Financial Officer Cynthia Lindsay delivered a presentation about the dam to the board before its vote, according to a transcript of the meeting. She said it was important that the state waive the down payment requirements due to the urgent work needed on the dam and the somewhat dire straits faced by the township financially.

Lindsay said the dam was built circa 1840 and was classified by the state Department of Environmental Protection as a “high hazard dam.” Current conditions at the structure, Lindsay added, “fail to meet modern global stability requirements that are applicable to a high hazard class one dam.”

The “high-hazard” designation is a product of an evaluation from the state Office of Dam Safety, which has determined that if a dam breach were to occur there was a risk of widespread property damage along the Great Egg Harbor River. Damage could extend to several neighoring municipalities, including Egg Harbor Township, Estell Manor and Weymouth Township. The office has also concluded that there was “the potential for loss of life.” Township officials have stressed that the dam is within an acceptable safety factor, but the need for the improvements was urgent.

Lindsay also addressed the finances of the township at the state meeting. She said Hamilton was facing a tax rate increase of nearly 6 cents per $100 of assessed property value this year — a hike that would cost the average homeowner, who…

SandHill and FANA Chiefs attend Teaneck Juneteenth silent march. First time invited to participate.

On June 17, 2023, Minister of International Affairs and FANA’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Principal Chief Dr. Ronald Yonaguska Holloway of the SandHill Band of Lenape and Cherokee Indians (NY, NJ, PA), and The Federation of Aboriginal Nations of the Americas’ Director, Chief Raymond Two Hawks Watson, Mashapaug Nations; FANA’s Communication Authority Director: Chief Casike/Tureygua Taino Cay, The Cibuco Bayamon Taino Tribe (PR and FL);  FANA’s Director of Visual Media and Digital Content, SandHill Tribal Council member Norris Branham, and FANA’s Director of Indigenous and Cultural Outreach to the United Nations, SandHill Tribal Member Ms. Maria Lorena Cosme attended the Juneteenth Silent March in Teaneck, New Jersey.

For expedience’s sake, I will refer to the SandHill Band of Lenape and Cherokee Indians as the SandHill and the Federation of Aboriginal Nations of the Americas as FANA.

The Minister of International Affairs and FANA’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Principal Chief Dr. Holloway of the SandHill was invited by the organizers of the event as a way of extending a long overdue recognition to the Indigenous people buried in the sacred site.

He then invited the members of FANA to attend the Silent march that was the kickoff to the Juneteenth weekend celebrations in Teaneck.

The event started on the Fairleigh Dickenson University Hackensack Campus by the statue of Reverend Martin Luther King. The silent march took them from the Campus to the bridge connecting the Hackensack Campus with the Teaneck Campus to the Native American and enslaved African Burial Ground located on Pomander Walk in Teaneck, Nj.

The current burial ground is a small remnant of what had once been a very large sacred burial site near the Hackensack River.

With the arrival of the Europeans came the enslavement of both Indigenous and African peoples. It was not unusual…

West Chester Green Team’s Legendary Lenape series under way

The West Chester Green Team launched its summer family education series on Saturday, June 24, during a rare break in the weekend’s downpours.

A group of almost 40 people of all ages gathered at West Chester Friends Meeting House to hear Chris Applegate from the Museum of Indian Culture in Allentown.  Applegate spoke about the daily lives of the Lenape tribe 500 years ago, before the arrival of colonists.  She displayed dozens of items including a pair of elk-hide moccasins.  Pennsylvania, she told her audience, is the home of the largest elk herd in the country, living appropriately in Elk County.  In so many other ways, however, there have been vast changes since those times.  Now the Lenape live as others do, with cell phones, cars, and jobs.

Applegate talked about the importance of music to the tribe and showed a turtle shell rattle and shakers made from deer hoofs.  She demonstrated a bow and arrows, as well as a spear.   A Lenape style cradle board with a life-size doll in it, carried by a strap on the forehead, not by shoulder straps as are modern baby packs. was also shown.  Applegate described the grinding of corn and the growing of “Three Sisters” vegetables, with corn in the center and beans and squash by its side, asking audience participants to volunteer to play the roles of the vegetables.  Planting in this way insured the health of the crops and, when eaten together, “the three sisters” provided healthy, balanced nutrition.

“Wanishi” means thank you in the Lenape language, with generosity the core value of the culture. In her concluding…

Huge fire takes out Lenape Arena

By LAURIE STUART

NARROWSBURG, NY — On Friday afternoon, June 23, a fire tore through the headquarters of Lang Industries. By Monday morning, owner Ned Lang was working at a temporary desk in a trailer on a small hill above the twisted metal hulk of the former Lenape Arena, 2.5 miles south of the hamlet of Narrowsburg. He was on the phone with one of his workers who was picking up supplies and planning the rebuild.

“I lost 40 years of tools, equipment and trucks,” he said, as he surveyed the damage that had, in a matter of minutes, devoured the steel and wood building.

“I was in Carbondale when my wife called me,” he said. “And I could hear the explosions; it sounded like Beirut. But thank God, no one was killed. Everyone got out.”

A worker who had just returned from a truck run let himself into a locked area to put gas into a lawn mower. Unfortunately, he entered the closed space with a lit cigarette. The worker received second degree burns on his forearms and is expected to make a full recovery, Lang said.

“I’ve got trucks already ordered from New Holland and we’ll be up and running as soon as we can,” Lang said, adding that it was lucky that his solid waste facility, located just beyond the arena building, was not damaged. “The paint isn’t even blistered,” he said.

Firefighters from Lava and Narrowsburg were alerted for a structure fire with a victim burned shortly after 12 noon. Upon arrival, Narrowsburg Fire Department Fire Chief David Casey requested initial mutual aid with a full response from Yulan Fire Department and Lake Huntington Fire Company. The victim was treated by EMS from Tusten Volunteer Ambulance Service, Highland Ambulance Service and Mobilemedic EMS and transported to…
