It couldn’t get any closer.

Moorestown Friends won the Burlington County Open on Saturday at Moorestown High. Day one on Friday took place at Veterans Park in Hamilton.

The Foxes tallied 14 points while Shawnee at 13 and Moorestown and Lenape each finished with 12.

Moorestown Friends won at all three singles positions. In the first singles final, Bella Pescatore defeated Shawnee’s Samantha Tepes, 6-1, 6-0. At second singles, Skye Mada won a three-set thriller over Natasha Sharnoff from Shawnee, 6-0, 4-6, 7-5. Kathryn Sebastian also won 6-0, 6-0 against Maya Butani from Moorestown.

In the first doubles final, Moorestown’s Laura Sullivan and Charlotte Morrison teamed up to top Lenape’s duo of Olivia Helmlinger and Kaitlyn King, 6-0, 6-1. Shawnee’s second doubles pair of Kalena Gatesman and Divya Prajapati won 6-2, 6-0 over Isabelle Moccia and Priya Panganamamula of Moorestown.

So far this season the Foxes are 7-4 and next face Moorestown on Monday. Moorestown defeated Friends earlier this season, 3-2, at the Haddonfield Invitational.

HACKETTSTOWN, NJ — The Hackettstown field hockey team is off to a solid start and hopes to do as well in the postseason as it has the last several years.

“We have been playing pretty well so far this year,” said Rachael Gorski, who is in her third year as head coach after being an assistant coach for three years. “We are 3-3 right now with losses to strong teams: Warren Hills, Lenape Valley, and Vernon.”

Hackettstown earned the fourth seed in the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex Tournament and earned a first-round bye. The team will take on No. 13 Vernon in the second round on Oct. 2. The Tigers last won the championship in 2018.

The team’s captains, senior Amy Wood and junior Ali Cetani; goalie Emily Newton; and sophomore forwards Kiara Koeller and Skyler Sciaretta are leading the team.

“Our captains are competent leaders, and our goalie has also been emerging as a leader in the back,” Gorski said. “Kiara Koeller and Skyler Sciaretta lead by example during practice and on the field.”

The Tigers’ first victory came over Newton, 2-1, on Sept. 11.

“Against Newton, Skyler Sciaretta returned from an injury late in regulation―which left her with a black eye―to score the game-winning goal in overtime,” Gorski said.

Koeller scored the team’s other goal, while Newton made 10 saves.

The Tigers defeated High Point, 2-1, on Sept. 18 and Wallkill Valley, 1-0, on Sept. 20.

Sciaretta and Koeller also scored the team’s goals against High Point. Newton made six saves. Emma Patton scored the team’s only goal against Wallkill Valley. Newton again made six saves in the victory.

Gorski said the Tigers are a young team.

Juan Murcia scored the winning goal for Eastern in its 3-2 overtime victory against Lenape in Medford.

Adam Badat set up the goal and scored one of his own while Jack Galvin had the team’s other goal. Brayden Cooper compiled six saves for Eastern (3-3).

Miguel Cervantes and Sean Shapiro produced one goal apiece for Lenape (2-2), which saw Kevin Niedzwiecki log an assist. Morgan Magargee made seven saves in the losing effort.

Senior Chloe Naylor and junior Mia McLean had two goals each as Lenape Valley won its fifth straight with a 5-1 victory over Vernon in Stanhope.

Sophomore Cassis Yappen also scored for Lenape Valley (5-1) while senior Mia Santana had two assists. Senior Tessa Morin and sophomore Molly Gannon each contributed an assist and freshman keeper Riely O’Brien made four saves.

Vernon fell to 1-5.

Daughters of the American Revolution, DAR, at the memorial for Chief Nimhan at Van Cortlandt Park

Westchester organizations, community members join ceremony to remember lost fight for tribal sovereignty

How do we honor and understand the sacrifice of those killed? That was the question for the crowd gathered on August 31st at a Van Cortlandt Park monument to honor Wappinger and Mahican warriors killed by British soldiers in the American Revolution.

The event was organized by the Daughters of the Revolution (DAR), the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR), the Kingsbridge Historical Society and “local community members who wish for the historical legacy of Chief Daniel Nimham to be preserved,” according to the event program. Representatives from the Town of Fishkill and the New York City Parks Department also spoke.

The ceremony mixed American military rituals with Native rites, including a sage smudging, a folding of the U.S. flag, and a dedication with stones from across the former Wappinger homeland. The DAR led the Pledge of Allegiance; Dr. Janice Turner of the Lenape Indian Tribe of Delaware spoke a Lenape invocation.

That inclusivity would not have accompanied the original dedication of the monument. It was the DAR – not the descendants of the Native soldiers – who had the power in 1906 to place a privately-funded monument in a New York City park. Native Americans hadn’t even been granted U.S. citizenship yet. It is only recently that they have felt safe to “be out,” shared Oleana…
