Media Barracks

Troopers from the Media barracks will be conducting a sobriety checkpoint this weekend, July 22 to 24. The report didn’t mention any location.

Avondale Barracks

• Police are looking for a 2003 BMW in connection with a retail theft at the East Marlborough Township Walmart on July 9. Few details were included in the report. It said $513 worth of vehicle speakers and accessories were taken during the incident at about 4:15 p.m. There was no description if the suspect, nor was there any mention of the BMW’s color or tag number.

• A 23-year-old man from Philadelphia, not named in the report, was arrested on drug charges in Pocopson Township on June 2. The arrest came after a traffic stop on Lenape Road just before midnight. Police said they stopped the vehicle, a 2010 Audi Q7, for a traffic violation. The report said the driver was taken into custody for DUI and marijuana possession.

• Police said Donna L. Maxwell, 53, of Kennett Square, was cited for following too closely after a July 2 accident on Lenape Road at Red Bridge Lane in Pocopson Township. The accident happened at 12:05 p.m. Police reported no injuries.

• A 46-year-old man from West Chester had a firearm stolen when someone entered his unlocked vehicle and took a Glock 43 pistol valued at $500. The theft happened on Williamsburg Drive in Pocopson Township on July 5. The serial number of the Glock is ZHS880.

About 400 years ago, the first Europeans began exploring land now known as Delaware.

As they journeyed through the region, their travels brought them face-to-face with the people who had lived there for millennia – the Lenni Lenape, the father tribe of the Lenape and Nanticoke Indians.  

This month, the Delaware Art Museum’s recently debuted exhibit, “In Conversation: Will Wilson,” works to forge a new relationship with Indigenous people by bringing visitors face-to-face with them through stories of Native people, 19th-century photography, and augmented reality (AR) technology for an immersive experience that connects the past with the present.

In about a year and a half from idea to execution, the exhibition came together in whirlwind timing for show planning. Not only did the museum need to secure the artist’s availability, but they also needed to develop a relationship with Delaware’s Native population − some of the very people the artist would feature in his photos.

To the editor:

We all love Milford for different reasons. It is a diamond in the rough. Whether you are a native and have seen myriad changes, you have been here for decades, or a newbie – Life in Milford is about to change to an unrecognizable entity – if we do not act now.

The Concrete Jungle of Two Mega Warehouses is being brought to us by our very own misguided leadership. Why? Have they lost their way? Have they forgotten the past heroes and life long legacies that made Milford what it is today?

Have they forgotten the original settlers, the Lenape Indians and their sacred reverence for the land and life giving waters. On her death bed in 1984, Touching Leaves, the last full blooded Lenape Indian, told her close friends to preserve her Lenape culture and ancestral lands.

Then Gifford Pinchot who is pounding on his mausoleum walls crying out to – stop this insanity and especially to protect his beloved Sawkill Creek. That is where he learned to fly fish and passed it down to his son. He discovered nature as a youth wandering this mountain.

People like the Merritt Quinn and the Quinn Family who have been stewards of this precious land for centuries. All the people whose efforts stopped the Tocks Island Dam Boondoggle proposal.

Barbara Yeaman whose efforts brought us the Upper Delaware River Recreational Area and founded the Delaware Highland Conservancy which has protected 18 thousand acres to date. People like Tom Hoff of the MWA, and Dick Snyder who beautified this town with every ounce of his efforts. People presently continue in that tradition like Bill Kiger and Peter and Nancy Pinchot.

Are we about to throw all that effort away? For what? Two Mega Warehouses that are the antithesis…

Protest disrupts the parade

A short walk away, the Salute to America Independence Day parade headed down Market Street towards City Hall. As floats, dancers, musicians, and cultural groups made their way through Old City, abortion rights activists dressed in green disrupted the parade with green smoke bombs. While they were quickly escorted off of the parade route, organizer Miriam Oppenheimer from Rise Up for Abortion Rights didn’t seem deterred. “We are frustrated at the Supreme Court decision that was made restricting the rights of women to control their own bodies… today is supposed to be a day of independence, but if you’re saddled with an unwanted child, you are not independent,” she said.

“We definitely think that the government can codify Roe vs. Wade and make it permanently on the books so that this would never be a struggle again… we want to make a splash today because we need more people to take to the streets to announce their frustration and [also] ask where this is going to go. Who are they going to come after next?”

The 16th Annual Zane Grey Festival. The free festival will be held on the grounds of Zane Grey Museum in Lackawaxen, Pennsylvania from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 16, 2022.

The Zane Grey Festival includes activities and events for children and adults throughout the day including:

Bill Streeter of the Delaware Valley Raptor Center will present a live birds of prey show from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m

Brookvalley Farms will be offering horse-drawn wagon rides from 11:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Adam DePaul, Tribal Council Member and Story Keeper of the Lenape of Pennsylvania, will present The Past and Present of the Lenape in Pennsylvania from 12:15 p.m.- 12:45 p.m.

Upper Delaware Puppeteers will present A Wildlife Journey Down the Upper Delaware from 1:00 p.m. – 1:20 p.m.

Park Ranger Rachael Freundlich will lead a guided walk around Dolly’s Garden Path from 1:00 p.m.-1:30 p.m., highlighting the life of Dolly Grey, the woman behind Zane Grey.

Local musician Dan Engvaldsen will perform folk music from 1:30 – 3:30 p.m.

National Parks Conservation Association will hold interactive water table demonstrations from 10:30-10:45 a.m. and 1:30– 1:45 p.m. Ongoing throughout the day, staff from Steamtown National Historic Site will demonstrate the “Ring of Fire” and the state of Pennsylvania will host their interactive Wood Mobile.

There will be craft activities available for children of all ages, a children’s scavenger hunt, primitive skills demonstrations, weaving demonstrations, groundwater model demonstrations, kayak safety demos by the National Canoe Safety Patrol, and more. Zane Grey’s legacy of literature and sportsmanship lives on in Lackawaxen.

One of the biggest automakers in the nation, Ford Motor Company, is being sued by the state of New Jersey for allegedly disposing waste on the territories of the Ramapough Lenape Nation, a federally recognized Native American tribe.

The company is accused of disposing thousands of tons of toxic paint sludge and other pollutants on the site of a former iron mine in northern New Jersey in the 1960s and 1970s. The lawsuit also claims the company donated or sold the land without disclosing the contamination. Tribal members claim that as a result, they have developed severe health issues like cancer and congenital disabilities.

However, these health problems aren’t the focus of the case. Instead, it demands compensation for the loss of natural resources and holds the automaker accountable for “deliberate acts or omissions taken with a wanton and willful disregard for the welfare of the residents of New Jersey.” 

The Environmental Protection Agency has found contaminants at the site, including lead, arsenic, and benzene. 

In a statement to Grist, a Ford spokesperson said, “Ford takes its environmental responsibility seriously and has shown that through our actions to address issues in Upper Ringwood. We understand this has affected the community and have worked cooperatively with the Borough of Ringwood, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency while implementing the remediation plan stipulated by the EPA.”
