MEDFORD – With a potent lineup that generated plenty of offensive fireworks, the Vineland High School softball team has the ability to put on a show.

Lenape’s Maya Knasiak proved to be the show stopper.

Making her first postseason start, the sophomore right-hander fired a three-hitter with 12 strikeouts, guiding Lenape to its first postseason win in over a decade with a 4-1 triumph over Vineland on Tuesday.

Seventh-seeded Lenape (14-6), which had lost its previous four playoff games by a combined five runs, will travel to second-seeded Jackson Memorial for Friday’s quarterfinal game.

Going up against a Vineland buzzsaw that averaged a tick under 10 runs per game this season, Knasiak took the fight right out of the Fighting Clan, limiting them to three singles and only one baserunner to advance past second base.

“Maya was outstanding,” Lenape head coach Eric Krastek said. “She’s been very consistent all season. She really hasn’t had a bad outing. We’ve lost six games and we’ve scored a total of two runs in those games. We’re never out of a game with Maya in the circle. She’s that dominant.”

Knasiak’s batterymate couldn’t agree more.

All that’s left of the regular season are a few odds and ends plus games to fill out the slight lull before the playoffs begin on Tuesday.  

Each of the teams in the Top 10 has a shot at taking home a sectional title and earning a berth into state championship weekend. All you have to do is keep winning. 

Here is a final look at the top teams heading into the playoffs:  

1. Haddonfield (record through Tuesday 13-1, last week 3) 

The Bulldogs pulled off the upset of the season with an overtime win at Moorestown last week. Does anyone remember the last South Jersey team other than Shawnee to pull off that feat? Answer below. 

Playoff opener: South Group 1 first-round vs. No. 16 Collingswood 

2. Cherokee (15-0, 2) 

South Jersey’s last remaining unbeaten has the last great test ahead of it on Friday against Lenape.  

Playoff opener: South 4 vs. (16) Williamstown 

3. Moorestown (11-2, 1) 

The Quakers haven’t been ranked below No. 1 in South Jersey since 2010, which should make the South 3 playoff field very nervous. 

Playoff opener: South 3 quarterfinal on June 5 

4. Lenape (10-2, 4) 

Lenape has a tasty playoff tuneup ahead on Friday when they host Cherokee for what could be a South 4 championship preview. 

Playoff opener: South 4 vs. (14) Howell 

5. Cherry Hill West (11-2, 5) 

The breakout team on 2021, the Lions should see their first real test on the South 3 semifinals. 

Playoff opener: South 3 vs. (14) Brick Memorial 

6. Clearview (11-5, 6) 

The Gloucester County Cup is on tap for Wednesday against West Deptford, then the No. 2 seed in south 3 thanks to a head-to-head win against Shawnee.  

Playoff opener: South 3 vs. (15) Toms River East 

7. Ocean City (10-3, 10) 

Nothing shakes up the Top 10 quite like a head-to-head battle. Ocean City nipped Mainland on Senior Night to jump up to the No. 7 spot.

A quick video trip to Ringwood State Park and Ringwood Manor in Ringwood, N.J.

RINGWOOD — If you’ve always craved a chance to see some old New Jersey projectile points, hide scrapers and other stone tools from as early as 6,000 B.C., a June event at Ringwood Manor State Park is your ticket..

Organized by the North Jersey Highlands Historical Society, the June 13 event will display and explain examples of the early stone tools and let collectors bring their own artifacts for expert assessment — and possible disappointment.

The society ran a similar event in 2014, said Ralph Colfax, the historical society president. Attendees came with items they uncovered in their yards, in a family collection or while hiking and brought them forward, Colfax said. Some were legitimate, he added. Some just looked like it.

Frequently, an object that appears to be a stone tool is a natural phenomenon, said Edward Lenik, a past president of the Archaeological Society of New Jersey and the historical society’s top expert on Ramapough Lenape artifacts.

“Very often, I have collectors come to me or my office and show me their artifacts, but there’s no evidence of wear or manufacturing,” Lenik said. “Sometimes, they’re just naturally shaped stones.”

The June event is scheduled for 1:30 to 4 p.m. at Ringwood Manor State Park, which houses its own collection of prehistoric artifacts.
