Scraping Doylestown’s history – The Bucks County Herald

Doreen Stratton

There are times when life treats you with a piece of knowledge about your hometown and you tuck it away, unless it pops up in your memory bank at an unexpected moment. Eleven years had passed before it happened for me.

It was Saturday, April 6, 2013, when a historical marker was unveiled at the corners of State and Main streets in Doylestown Borough. The marker dedicated this intersection as the trail for the Lenni Lenape Nation as they traveled from the east and from the south to their destination, the Delaware River.

The Doylestown Historical Society with assistance from Melissa Cornick, a journalist, and strategic communication specialist (for professional activities), coordinated the day’s event, which included a lecture by Professor Evan Pritchard, descendant of the Micmac people (part of the Algonquin Nation).

Earlier that same day Pritchard’s, an Algonquin Historian, had lectured to a packed audience at the Doylestown Presbyterian Church. I was impressed with Pritchard describing the Lenape historic trade route, the stop at State and Main streets, its ancient land use, and the pathways along what became Routes 202 and 611.

After the marker dedication, there was a lively afternoon powwow at the Doylestown Historical Society Park.

Pritchard’s visit allowed him to tour some of the tunnels which remain below our town’s streets. Thousands of years ago these “tunnels” were caves where the Lenape, a nomadic indigenous tribe, rested after traveling from the shores of New Jersey.

Eleven years after the Lenape Marker’s dedication, the front-page April 4, 2024, edition of the Bucks County Herald reported:

“Bucks County Historical Society’s Doylestown Twp. Land eyed for luxury homes.”

Where, you ask, is this land?

When you drive south on Main Street in Doylestown Borough, across from the new Wawa is a thicket of trees — 24…

At de Young, local artists eye ‘The Peaceable Kingdom’—and US colonialism

>>We need you! Become a 48hills member today so we can continue our incredible local news + culture coverage. Just $20 a month helps sustain us. Join us here.

As part of his wide-ranging and often interactive de Young Museum show—his first major US exhibition—Rituals of Care (runs through July 7), Taiwanese artist Lee Mingwei asked local artists to reinterpret Quaker minister Edward Hicks’ 1846 painting Our Peaceable Kingdom, which depicts a prophecy from The Book of Isiah: “The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid.”

Perhaps more concretely, the work—of which Hicks made a vast number of versions—portrays the 1682 purchase treaty that the Quakers’ William Penn signed with the Lenape Delaware peoples. Though Penn apparently respected the terms of the treaty throughout his life, Hicks was witness to how successive generations did not always co-exist with the Lenape Delaware governed by Penn’s promise of friendship, mistreating and eventually displacing them from their lands.

Lee’s artistic project includes “asking how art can encourage social connection and healing in a time of so much trauma and loss.” By asking artists to reinterpret Hicks’ painting, and then they in turn ask fellow artists to do the same, Lee creates “a family tree of copies with multiple descendants.”

The original: Edward Hicks (1780-1849), “The Peaceable Kingdom”, (1846). Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Gift of Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller 3rd

In total, 16 artists delivered their takes across 39 canvases on this fraught capture of colonial history. Painter Chelsea Ryoko Wong approached her reinterpretation by breaking down the piece and painting from the background to the foreground. Subsequently, two more artists drew from her work, alongside the museum’s copy of…

The former owners of the Galer Estate Vineyard and Winery have listed this 26-acre West Chester property.

The former owners of the Galer Estate Vineyard and Winery have listed a 26-acre West Chester estate with its historic main home, vineyard, and art studio for $4.75 million, writes Ryan Mulligan for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

The property is located near Longwood Gardens at 1740 Lenape Road. This is the first time the property has been listed for sale in 24 years.

The main home has five bedrooms and five bathrooms and was constructed in the 1800s. Additions were made in the 1930s and 1970, and it also features a pool house and a guest house.

The stately stone exterior carries on inside, with the kitchen, sunroom, and the home office all boasting exposed stone lines.

Brad and Lele Galer purchased the property from a developer in 2000. The couple has conducted massive renovations in the time they have lived there. They planted around 50 trees at the property’s entrance to provide it with more privacy.

“When we bought it, it was overgrown,” said Brad. “It definitely was outdated. And over 20-plus years, we created something special.”

‘All people are a part of Afro-Futurism’

Native artists included in multimedia project on Lenape homelands

LENAPEHOKING — An ambitious multimedia project has taken over the campus of one of the world’s leading performing arts centers, here on the homelands of the Lenape people. Conceived by the legendary musician Nona Hendryx, The Dream Machine Experience is rooted in Afro-Futurism, the social, political and cultural movement that explores the intersection of the African diaspora with science and technology. A broad range of creative works, utilizing everything from augmented reality to artificial intelligence, are on display at the Lincoln Center in New York City through the end of June. But as Hendryx explained on Saturday evening, Native people are playing a critical role in the shared vision of the future. Virgil Ortiz, from the Pueblo of Cochiti in New Mexico, and Cannupa Hanska Luger, a citizen of the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation in North Dakota, are two of the featured artists in the installation. “All people are a part of Afro-Futurism,” Hendryx said in Lenapehoking, the Lenape term for the homelands they were removed from in the northeastern part of the United States. “People think that because it’s called Afro-Futurism that it is a Black-only experience,” Hendryx continued at a panel presentation with several of her creative partners. “It is that we all — as I said earlier — come out of Africa. So we can all be a part of Afro-Futurism.”…

This hour-long History Alive! Presentation, scheduled for 3 p.m., will include a monologue by the historical character Thomas Ingles, followed by interactive discussions between the audience and the character and then with the presenter.

Lenape Pines Service Unit Girl Scouts and Leaders Honor Veterans at Atlantic County Veterans Cemetery.Lenape Pines Service Unit Girl Scouts and Leaders Honor Veterans at Atlantic County Veterans Cemetery.

Today, we’re shining a spotlight on an inspiring tradition where Girl Scouts from the Lenape Pines Service Unit place flags on the graves of Veterans three times a year.

In a world that moves way too fast, it’s important to take a step back and remember those who have paved the way for our freedom. These Lenape Pines Girl Scouts do just that by honoring Veterans in their community. The Lenape Pines Service Unit, serving girls in and around Mays Landing, NJ, has embraced this noble tradition. They visit the Atlantic County Veteran’s Cemetery at Estell Manor Park three times a year, placing flags on the graves of those who have served our nation. This act of service is a testament to their commitment to making a positive impact.

Honoring Veterans is not just about paying tribute; it’s about acknowledging the sacrifices made for our freedom. Placing flags on graves teaches Girl Scouts the importance of gratitude. It’s a hands-on way for them to understand and appreciate the freedoms they enjoy today. This tradition fosters a sense of pride and responsibility in these young minds, encouraging them to carry these values throughout their lives.

For many Girl Scouts, participating in these events becomes a cherished memory. It’s a chance to learn about history, hear firsthand Veterans’ accounts, and understand service’s true meaning. These experiences shape their character and inspire them to continue…
